BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Tuesday that China values its relations with South Africa and would like to work together with the latter to expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation and enhance the understanding and friendship between their peoples. Wang Gang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Blade Nzimande, secretary general of the South African Communist Party (SACP). China and South Africa have maintained close high-level visits,frequent exchanges, fruitful cooperation, and coordination in international affairs since their diplomatic relations began in 1998, Wang said. BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to Japan would have a profound impact on bilateral strategic and reciprocal relations. "President Hu's trip is a great event in Sino-Japanese relations in the new period," Xi told visiting Yoshinobu Ishikawa, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan. Xi said this trip would promote mutual understanding and friendship as well as substantial cooperation between the two countries. BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Thursday night it had launched a level-three flood control emergency response mechanism to cope with Typhoon Kalmaegi. Tropical storm Kalmaegi escalated to typhoon level on Thursday and was expected to be reinforced and land the coast areas in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on Friday, according to the headquarters. Kalmaegi, the seventh tropical storm this year, is also expected to affect Shanghai on Friday and Saturday. Under its influence, force 8-10 winds is predicted to blow on the sea off Zhejiang. Heavy storms are likely to hit the coast cities in Zhejiang, the provincial meteorological authority said Thursday. It is also expected to bring heavy rain to Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in Fujian in the next two days. The heavy rain would continue in Fujian until this weekend, according to the weather services. XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's southwestern province of Sichuan needs 1.67 trillion yuan (about 245.6 billion U.S. dollars) for reconstruction after the devastating earthquake on May 12, Huang Xiaoxiang, the province's vice governor, said on Sunday. "Sichuan is still in need of a large amount of fund despite the efforts of the central government, local governments and other social sectors," Huang told a conference held in Xiamen City, in eastern Fujian Province. The total funds, including those the central and other provincial governments raised, overseas donations, and lottery earnings, accounted for less than 25 percent of what the reconstruction work demanded.
