OCEANSIDE (KGTV): A program that offers daily, hot meals to seniors in Oceanside is running out of money and could be forced to close."It’s stressful, it’s super stressful," says Sylvia Spears, the Executive Director of the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association. "I've had sleepless nights, and I’m trying to figure out who do we pay, who do we not pay?"The program gives seniors a hot lunch every day at the Oceanside Senior Citizens Center. For people who can't make it, they also offer home delivery. For a lot of the seniors, it's the only hot meal and the only personal interaction they get all day."We become friends," says Patricia Bonynge, who's been coming to the meals for almost ten years. "Even though we don’t go to each other’s homes or talk on the phone, we come here, and we converse."Bonynge also used the home delivery service for a few months after she had foot surgery and couldn't drive or walk. She says it was a lifeline while she recovered.Spears says the program serves around 50,000 meals every year. That number continues to grow as Americans live longer."Clients are up; donations are down," she says.Right now, the meals are partially funded through a grant from the County. It's part of the Federal "Older Americans Act." The grant is a three-year contract, which expires on December 31st, 2018.But this year, Spears says she decided not to reapply because he hasn't been able to come up with enough money to cover the rest of the budget."Right now we need about 15,000 dollars extra per month to keep going," she says. "That includes our food, kitchen supplies and our trucks."Other organizations, like Meals on Wheels, could step in to fill the gap. Spears is also talking to the City of Oceanside for funding. There's a closed-session City Council meeting Wednesday night to address the issue.The city already lets the Association rent the Senior Center facilities and kitchen for per year. They also work with the San Diego Food Bank to do a monthly food box distribution for seniors who qualify.Despite that, city officials say they realize how important the hot meal program is to older residents."It gives them hope," says City Recreation Supervisor Homer Post. "That hope is what allows them to live until the next day. If you don’t take care of your elderly, you can’t take care of anything that you got going on."Spears is hopeful that someone will come through with a donation to keep the meals going. OLDENBERG, Germany — A German former nurse on Tuesday admitted murdering 100 patients, making him one of the country's deadliest post-war serial killers.Niels Hoegel, 41, confessed to killing his patients -—between the ages of 34 and 96 — at two hospitals in northern Germany between 2000 and 2005.Hoegel is accused of giving his victims various non-prescribed drugs, in an attempt to show off his resuscitation skills to colleagues and fight off boredom.On the first day of his trial at a court in Oldenburg, northwest Germany, Hoegel said the murder allegations against him were correct.Around 126 relatives of the victims are co-plaintiffs in the trial, which is expected to run until May next year, a court spokeswoman told CNN. 740

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up early Saturday morning for the Oceanside half-Ironman. The race is a total of 70.3 miles of biking, swimming and running. For one local Camp Pendleton marine, the race meant so much more. Captain John Watkins participated in the Ironman in memory of his daughter, Amelia Mae Watkins, also known as Millie. Millie passed away when she was just 10-years-old from neuroblastoma last year. Since Millie's death, her family raises money to raise awareness about her specific type of cancer. The Watkins raised over ,000 dollars for this race. OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- While many of San Diego County's beaches and parks are now off-limits due to the Coronavirus, Oceanside remains open. But some residents fear that a beach and golf course soft-closures only encourage people to ignore the stay-at-home order. Unlike the taped up beaches in San Diego, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas, Thursday evening, Oceanside decided on a soft-closure. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. But the beaches remain open. "We figured, as long as we can encourage people and enforce that social distancing, we would be able to keep those recreational opportunities available," Samuel Liston with the City of Oceanside said. One person taking advantage of Oceanside's open beach was surfer, Oliver Dillard of Bay Park. Earlier, he was at Pacific Beach but was told by a police officer to leave."I'm just in the moment. Being here now," Dillard said. But not everyone is thrilled. "My reaction to them keeping open the beaches in even a soft way is horror," Oceanside resident, Frances Pope said. Pope suffers from a rare Autoimmune Disorder. She lives in a senior community in Oceanside. She says if her local beach is the only one that is open, people will flock to it, and you can forget about social distancing. "We're going to have a swarm of people, and it's not just Oceanside that is going to be hit by that," Pope said. "They're going to go back to their homes, inland or down south, and they will infect their families."It is not only beaches. Oceanside's City-run golf courses are also one of the last ones to remain open. According to the Pro-shop, golfers must walk on the course. No golf carts will be rented unless a person has a disability placard from the DMV.Still, Pope says this "halfway measure" is not enough. She wants everyone to take the virus seriously and stay home. "Every single person that can stop one trip out helps to keep everyone else safe," Pope said. The city says in regards to the beaches, they have lifeguards on duty. And they will keep a close eye. "We are constantly reevaluating these processes. Every day, multiple times a day, and if there are problems, we will have to do more," Liston said. 2222
