DOVER, Del. (AP) — Erik Moses has been named president of Nashville Superspeedway. He's the first Black man to hold that title at any NASCAR track. Moses most recently served as president of the XFL's DC Defenders. Prior to working for the XFL, Moses served as CEO of the DC Sports & Entertainment Commission, Director of D.C. Department of Small & Local Business Development, and Senior Vice President at Events DC.He now leads the charge of the scheduled Nashville reboot in 2021. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — The City of El Cajon has become a home away from home for many Chaldeans.They are a Catholic- Christian community who migrated to the U.S. from northern Iraq. El Cajon has the second largest number of Chaldean residents in the country."We as Chaldeans believe in the hope, and the resurrection, and the hope of what Jesus gives us," says Father Daniel Shaba.The church is the center of the Chaldean community in El Cajon. Hundreds of people gather at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral for services each day.Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonMany Chaldean families left their home country of Iraq searching for a better life, after decades of war and violence against Christians and the church."We all share the same story of leaving and fleeing this persecution in Iraq," says Shaba. He says his family stayed in Greece before being cleared to come to the U.S. in 1994.According to the church, the first known Chaldean migrant came to San Diego in 1951. Within 30 years, the population grew to approximately 2,500. Today, nearly 40,000 Chaldean families have made El Cajon their home."The best part of El Cajon is the community," says doctor John Kasawa.Kasawa sees 15 to 20 patients a day, many of whom are Chaldean. Kasawa says he's one of few Chaldean doctors born in the U.S. He practices holistic and western medicine. Kasawa says his culture sparked his interest in becoming a doctor."They planted the seeds of how natural foods and drinking can have a very beneficial effect on longevity and really quality of life," Kasawa said.Detective Louie Michael, with the El Cajon Police Department, says he's grateful for his parents' bravery."At age 5, my dad was in the military, under that regime, and then we escaped from Iraq to turkey in a refugee camp and then came here at the end of '93," says Michael.He has been with El Cajon Police Department for more than ten years."I looked at the benefit of having a community that has nobody that they can speak to," says Michael. "For ten years, I was the only cop in the department that spoke Arabic and Aramaic."With Michael's help, the department now has five Chaldean officers on the force. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The District Attorney has decided against filing charges against a man who reportedly shot and killed a suspect trying to break into his work truck in El Cajon. The shooting happened on the 1100 block of Mona Place in March of 2018. Authorities say Michael Poe woke up in the early-morning hours of March 11 to the sound of glass shattering. When he went outside, he found the suspect, Joseph Mercurio, breaking into his work truck. Mercurion’s mother told 10News her son had a drug problem, but was doing his best to stay sober. Mercurio’s mother filed a lawsuit against Poe. At this time, the status of the lawsuit is unclear. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A renowned El Cajon artist who captured a moment in American history is helping it live on today. Olaf Wieghorst, known as the dean of Western art, spent most of his adult life in El Cajon. “He couldn't not paint and everything he painted had a cowboy, an Indian or a horse in it,” said Jim Daniels of the Olaf Wieghorst Museum. Daniels said horses were in Wieghorst’s blood. “Great horseman having been around horses his whole life,” said Daniels. Complete Coverage: Life in El CajonWieghorst’s father was a photographer who taught his son how to do handstands on stools and on horses. Wieghorst used his horse skills as a mounted patrolman in the New York Police Department. After he married a woman named Mae, he was motivated to leave the East Coast. “He was not enamored with her mother so he got out a map of the United States and wanted to find the place farthest from New York,” said Daniels. In 1945, Wieghorst started a new life in El Cajon as a natural artist with no formal training. “He traveled in a pickup truck with a camper shell on it and spent time with Navajo and local Indians all through the west,” Daniels said. Wieghorst often painted from a room which still shows paint splatters on the wall. As his reputation grew, so did his fans: Presidents Eisenhower, Ford, and Reagan, and celebrities including Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood. The painter also appeared in western movies with John Wayne, including “El Dorado” in 1967. “They became good friends and drinking buddies and John Wayne would come down and hang out with him.” Two of Wieghorst’s paintings, the Navajo Madonna and Navajo Man sold for more than million in 1985. However, interest in Wieghorst’s work has waned. “I think there's a lot of people around El Cajon still who've never heard the name and could care less, and there were a lot of people then who had no idea they had one of the greatest artists the world has ever had,” said Daniels. The Wieghorst Museum brings in children to keep the painter’s legacy alive. “Part of the strength of a community is remembrance of the past and appreciation of greatness and that's displayed through art.” Wieghorst died in 1988 at the age of 88. 2217
