The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning the public about fake social media giveaways, where scammers use a technique called “like-farming.”The scam involves posts on Facebook, Instagram or other platforms that ask you to like or comment to enter for the chance to win something, like 0 in groceries for example. The catch is that many of these giveaways don’t actually exist. They’re created by scammers as a way of accumulating as many social media interactions as possible, according to the BBB.Once the scammers have garnered enough likes or comments, the BBB says they’ll edit the post and add something malicious, such as a link to malware.Other times, the BBB says the scammers will strip the original content off the page that has garnered likes and use it to promote “spammy” products or sell it on the black market. While these phony giveaways exist online, so do legitimate ones. The BBB has offered these tips to decipher which are real and which are fake:Look for the blue checkmark. Many social media platforms verify pages from brands and celebrities so that users can tell real pages from copycats. Make sure you look for that trust mark before liking and sharing content.Watch out for new accounts: If you think a giveaway is real, click on the business or celebrity’s profile. If it’s a new account with very little other content, that’s a big red flag.Look out for spelling errors and typos: Real brands use giveaways to promote their company. Spelling errors and typos will make them look bad! They are a big warning signs of a scam. The giveaway asks you to complete too many tasks: If a giveaway asks you to comment on multiple posts, follow several accounts, and tag a couple of brands, it becomes almost impossible to keep track of everyone participating and pick a winner at random (as required by law). There are no terms and conditions. Online giveaways should include contact details of the organizer, how to take part, how the winner will be selected, and eligibility requirements. If you don’t see information, that’s an instant red flag.Don’t click “like” on every post in your feed. Scammers are counting on getting as many mindless likes as possible, so be sure you only “like” posts and articles that are legitimate. Don’t help scammers spread their con. 2298

TEMPE, AZ — A train has caught fire after a derailment on a railroad bridge over Tempe Town Lake. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. local time on the south side of the lake near Mill Avenue.A spokesperson with Tempe Fire Department says the incident involves a Union Pacific train that derailed and caused a partial bridge collapse over Tempe Town Lake.About 90 firefighters from multiple departments are at the scene of the second-alarm hazardous materials response.A Union Pacific spokesperson says eight to 10 rail cars caught fire and three tank cars fell onto an empty park area below. The spokesperson says two tank cars contained cyclohexanone and one contained a rubber material. None are believed to be leaking and no tank cars were involved in the fire. One person was reportedly treated for smoke inhalation, but the train crew is not injured. No other injuries have been reported. The Phoenix region's Valley Metro says light rail trains are not crossing Tempe Town Lake at this time due to the fire. Valley Metro's train service is being rerouted at Mill Ave/3rd St and Center Parkway/Wash St.Tempe Police say some streets in the area are also restricted and freeway traffic on the nearby Loop 202 may be impacted due to smoke. It's unknown what caused the derailment. This story was originally published by Ashley Loose on KNXV in Phoenix. 1357

Student loan borrowers are getting another break.A recent executive order signed by President Trump extends the suspension of payments and interest on federally-held student loans from September 30 to December 31, but certain details are still unclear.“The language isn’t super clear, so we student loan nerds are anxiously awaiting the Department of Education’s guidance, which we are expecting in the next couple of weeks for sure,” said Betsy Mayotte with The Institute of Student Loan Advisors (TISLA).Borrowers have reported their loan servicers are also awaiting direction from the Department of Education.Aside from a break in payments, Mayotte said there are programs borrowers in default should take advantage of during this COVID period.“Loan rehabilitation is kind of an awesome and unique thing for the federal student loan program. If you make nine consecutive on-time payments in an amount that’s based on your income, so the payments can be as low as , not only are you taken out of default, but they remove the default line from your credit report like it was never there. And the collection costs are significantly reduced,” said Mayotte. And right now, suspended payments will count toward rehabilitation.According to the department’s Federal Student Aid office: “If you enter a new rehabilitation agreement between March 13, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2020, suspended payments that would have been made from the beginning of your agreement until Sept. 30, 2020, will count.” “They’re counting this period like you’re making those rehab payments even though you don’t have to make them,” said Mayotte. It's still uncertain whether the same treatment will continue under the president’s executive order.Mayotte added that private student loan borrowers may want to consider refinancing now that interest rates have gone down. And even though payments for many borrowers have been suspended, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay anything, especially for those still employed. With interest waived, anything you pay now will go directly towards your principal, so when payments resume, interest will collect on a lower balance. If you have questions about your loan or need help with a dispute, TISLA offers free advice. Also, check out StudentAidPandemic.org for up-to-the-minute guidance on student loans and financial aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. If borrowers need additional assistance with their student loan servicer, they should contact the Maryland Student Loan Ombudsman by email at studentloan.ombudsman@maryland.gov or by phone at 410-230-6185.This story was reported by Mallory Sofastaii at WMAR. 2631

The Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday that they would start its football season, which consists of 10 in-conference games, on Sept. 5.In a news release, the conference released the schedule for the upcoming season, with games slated to end on Nov. 21 to align with academic calendars.Conference officials also set out parameters on the medical protocol as the landscape of the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold.“Our institutions are committed to taking the necessary measures to facilitate a safe return to campus for our students this fall,” said Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President in the press release. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have prioritized the health and safety of our students. Their welfare is paramount and remains at the forefront of all of our decisions. Today’s announcement, though subject to local, state and federal public health guidelines, provides a path forward for Big Ten student-athletes to return to competition based on comprehensive, conference-wide medical policies and protocols established by the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee. We will continue to evaluate the best available information and advice from public health officials as we make decisions and necessary adjustments going forward.”Conference officials said the 10 conference-only games would be played over 12 weeks. 1482

State of Nevada “thinks” that they can send out illegal vote by mail ballots, creating a great Voter Fraud scenario for the State and the U.S. They can’t! If they do, “I think” I can hold up funds to the State. Sorry, but you must not cheat in elections. @RussVought45 @USTreasury— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 20, 2020 337
