SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo and Zoo Safari Park combined for a record attendance of more than 5.5 million visitors in 2018, it was announced today.More than 4 million people visited the zoo in 2018 and over 1.5 million visited the Safari Park. It was the first year in the zoo's 100-year history in which attendance surpassed 4 million, according to zoo officials, who believe the appeal of new exhibits such as Walkabout Australia and Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks contributed significantly to the record-setting year."We are delighted to have been able to host more than four million people at the zoo, and I know that a lot of this is due to the wonderful new guest areas and the commitment to guest service shown by our employees every day," said San Diego Zoo Director Dwight Scott. "It has been a pleasure to share our love of wildlife with so many people this year -- and we know that this high attendance will help to fund additional conservation work in the future."Zoo officials also touted the year's conservation efforts of San Diego Zoo Global, the nonprofit that runs the zoo and the Safari Park. The organization was able to continue increasing its work conserving and protecting at-risk species all over the world due, in part, to the record attendance numbers."This attendance record shows us that people care about wildlife, and care about saving species," said Douglas G. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A family’s trip to the pumpkin patch goes sour when thieves went picking through their car while they were picking out their pumpkins.Fay Feltman, her daughter, her granddaughter and great grandson went to the pumpkin patch located off Mission Gorge in Grantville.Because of how busy the lot was, they struggled to find an open space. Once inside, the granddaughter got a call from her dad asking about a recent Walmart charge of 00.RELATED: Intruder raids Del Cerro bedroom while woman sleepsFeltman still frustrated Tuesday, “Who would think this would happen at a pumpkin patch”. She tells 10 News her daughter ran to the car to find the window smashed and the purse stolen right from the trunk of the car.Feltman says her and her family were only in the patch for about 30 minutes. In that amount of time the thieves broke in, stole the purse and made it to Walmart off Murphy Canyon Road to make the purchase.Before heading into the pumpkin patch, Feltman says they took an extra step to put their purses in the trunk, making sure to not leave them in the back seat and visible.RELATED: Family alerted to burglars roaming tented condoUnfortunately the thieves still smashed the driver’s window to access the trunk latch but only grabbed her daughter’s purse and leaving Feltman’s.Feltman’s daughter has spent the past few days on the phone with the bank trying to cancel cards and reorder new ones.She also was at the DMV all day Monday and purchasing a new phone Tuesday. “Who would dream of people who are so evil and so cruel and so black hearted to do something like this I’m just in shock”.Now, the family left dealing with a complete invasion of privacy and sense of security, ”It’s like you’re violated even though they didn’t take any thing of mine personally they were in my car, reaching into my car just that alone makes you feel dirty, its just an icky feeling” Feltman tells us. 1937
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A clerical error means the San Diego Unified School District will not have federal funding available for its homeless students in the coming years.Local investigative news group inewsource reported the district will likely lose out on up to 0,000 in funds due to a missing signature on its application for the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program.California Department of Education spokesperson Scott Roark confirmed with 10News that the SDUSD submitted an application that was “disqualified and was not read” because of the missing required signature. 605
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 98-year-old woman is being evicted from her Ocean Beach home after living there for nearly three decades. Betty Morse moved into her tiny Ocean Beach cottage back in the late 1980’s. After her husband died, she needed a place she could afford. “I was by myself, but I managed,” Morse said. “I could walk to work.” Morse said the rent was about 0 when she moved in. “It was a beautiful place to live because you could walk to the beach and watch the sunset,” she said. This little place by the beach that fits her so well was supposed to be her last stop. "See, I figured I'd lived a wonderful life in Ocean Beach, and I want to live and die here, you know, because I feel so comfortable here,” Morse said. “It's my little house, and it's all I know.” Morse said this year she was asked to sign a new rental agreement. Her family had some disagreements with a couple of changes made by the landlord: one was a no-smoking addendum. Morse told 10News after decades of being a smoker at 98-years-old, she quit so she could stay in the home. Despite her efforts, she said after the attorneys went back and forth a few times, she received a 90-day-notice in July terminating her tenancy. Morse doesn't know what to do if she’s forced to leave. “I don’t know who will rent to me because in two months I’ll be 99 and they are not going to be happy to rent an apartment,” she said. During her 30 years at the property, Morse said she never had a problem with the rental. A fixture in the neighborhood, she knows San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his mother. "She said, 'Kevin, I want a picture of Betty with you' and he said 'OK mom,'” she said. “He came over to the step and she said, 'She's very unsteady on her feet, Kevin, don't let her fall.'" Morse said her rent was always paid on time, a trait she picked up from the one man she ever loved. "Before he died, when he was in the ICU, he had a tube, but he wrote, don't forget to pay the rent.” A model tenant, Morse is using Section 8 housing assistance to help cover her rent. According to the termination notice she showed to 10News, the owner is electing to opt out of the Section 8 program and not renew the lease. It states the owner will be conducting substantial renovations to the unit and following the renovations the owner desires to rent the unit at a higher rental value, being that of the market rate value. The notice states the owner will be opting out of Section 8 entirely."They clearly state on their 90-day notice that their just cause is they don't want to comply with Section 8,” said Pamela Macias with San Diego County Evictions. Macias is working with Morse and her family to try and keep her in the home. "She's willing to pay market rent and just for no reason at all they want her out,” Macias said. Morse does have children, and instead of being out on the street she could move in with one of them. However, nearing the century mark she worries about being a burden.“I don't want to be in a nursing home either,” she said. “I still want to be independent.” The 90-day-notice has expired and Morse is still living in the property. The property owner filed an unlawful detainer, which is basically an eviction lawsuit. Team 10 contacted the owners of the property; they declined to comment due to pending litigation. Housing Assistance in San Diego The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) states that more than 6,000 landlords are participating in the rental assistance program. Most landlords don’t usually stop participating in the program, but it does happen, according to the commission. They say the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance program includes options to meet the needs of both landlords and tenants. Landlords can increase rents for rental-assistance tenants as they would for market-rate tenants as long as 60 days’ notice is provided to the rental assistance tenants and the new rent is determined to be reasonable.According to SDHC, to evaluate the reasonableness of the rent it compares the requested rent to the rents on other units on the premises with tenants who do not receive rental assistance. Right now, landlords are not required to accept tenants who receive Section 8 rental assistance. However, in August 2019 a new amendment to San Diego’s source of income ordinance will prevent landlords from declining a tenant based only on the household receiving rental assistance. “It opens large opportunities for our clients to receive assistance and utilize their voucher in the City of San Diego,” said Carrie Leverett, director of the SDHC rental assistance department. “It allows our clients to maintain affordable housing and find affordable housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A burst of winter weather is set to move into San Diego County’s mountains early Monday morning, lasting throughout the day. According to the National Weather Service, a cold trough will drop to the southwest Monday, triggering showers along and west of the mountains. The freezing level will fall quickly late in the day, resulting in the possibility of icy conditions on roadways.
