(KGTV) -- Hundreds of thousands of veterans and active duty military call San Diego County home, but a group says they are facing big disadvantages when trying to buy a house here.The San Diego Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals says more than 60 percent of listings in the county won't accept offers with V.A. loans.The federally backed loans don't require a down payment or mortgage insurance. Those eligible in San Diego County can borrow up to about 0,000 without any cash down. "We have served, and the V.A. loan is a guaranteed loan," said Andre Hobbs, a San Diego realtor and veteran who heads the association.Hobbs says the benefit is backfiring for some home seekers in San Diego's ultra-competitive housing market. It's because he says sellers are opting for offers instead that include cash down payment because of a misperception about V.A. applicants."They assume that this buyer is ready to walk," Hobbs said. "He's not motivated."Mark Goldman, a real-estate lecturer at San Diego State University, said there are some misconceptions about V.A. loans, such as that they are more complex. He added there are a few extra disclosures, but they aren't cumbersome. But V.A. buyers can also have an advantage if the current owner also served in the military."Luckily we may meet another veteran seller that understands, 'hey, I'm willing to do that,'" Hobbs said.    1460

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board voted Wednesday to cut more than 220 educators and place its beleaguered superintendent on paid leave.Staff cuts include educators and all librarians. In all, the board voted to eliminate 223 employees in hopes of balancing its budget.The board cited a decline in enrollment for the cuts, but said if enrollment goes up, librarians would be the first to return.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsThe vote ratifies an earlier referendum in which the board voted to lay off nearly 240 employees and staff members in February. The district's planned cuts to jobs and programs had been widely panned by staff and the public, with many calling on officials to consider salary cuts instead. During February's board meeting, one teacher told the board that their proposal would "kill this community and hurt our kids."Several staff were supposed have received pink slips in March but the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing campus shutdowns temporarily staved off layoffs.The board also voted 4-1 Wednesday night to place SUHSD superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave. Since then, teachers have been cut, bus routes were eliminated, and class sizes have increased.On Monday, an audit from the state's Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) released a 79-page report saying there is enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the SUHSD dating back to 2018.Previously, Janney served 31 years in the SUHSD in various roles, including principal and assistant superintendent. She earned her doctorate degree in education from San Diego State University in 2010, according to her professional online profile. (CNS) - A former part-time Coronado High School basketball coach who engaged in sex acts with a 17-year-old female student was sentenced Tuesday to three years of probation, and may face sex offender registration if he violates his probationary terms.Jordan Tyler Bucklew, 34, was arrested and charged earlier this year after the Coronado Police Department received a report regarding "an inappropriate relationship" between a part-time coach and a teenage student.Bucklew was arrested three days later.According to the original criminal complaint, the incidents took place between December 2019 and January 2020.Bucklew was sentenced Tuesday afternoon following his guilty plea to a felony count of unlawful sex with a minor.RELATED STORIES:Basketball coach pleads guilty to sex charge involving studentCoach arrested for "inappropriate relationship" with student, police saySan Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Popkins declined to impose sex offender registration at the sentencing hearing, but left the option open should Bucklew violate the terms of his probation.Bucklew was also ordered to serve one year in custody, which Popkins said could be served in the County Parole and Alternative Custody electronic monitoring program, if he's eligible for the program.Another court hearing was set for early March, at which time other custody options will be explored, should he not be accepted into the program.Other probationary terms include no association or contact with minors.Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang read a letter from Jane Doe, who the prosecutor said did not wish to appear at Bucklew's sentencing hearing.The victim wrote that she's been in therapy on a weekly basis for the trauma she suffered, with no end in sight to the lingering feelings of guilt."Every day I find a new way to blame myself for what happened," Jane Doe wrote. "These feelings bring me to believe that I do not deserve anything, that I do not matter, that I am a constant burden to the world."Wang and the victim's parents urged the judge to impose lifetime sex offender registration due to a variety of factors, including the significant age difference and Bucklew's position of authority in the relationship as a school employee.Wang said Bucklew groomed the victim and maintained his relationship with Jane Doe in a secretive manner, indicating he was aware it was inappropriate. Wang said that upon his arrest, Bucklew directed the girl to delete messages sent between them.Wang said Jane Doe leaned on Bucklew for emotional support amid various issues going on in her life, which Bucklew took advantage of to initiate the physical component of the relationship.Bucklew addressed the court and said he was "extremely apologetic" to Jane Doe and her family.He said he's always tried to make himself available as a friend or coach for people to talk to, as happened with Jane Doe."I see now and I acknowledge my actions were unlawful and where I should have drawn the line, I didn't," Bucklew said. "I'm sincerely sorry."I never intended to put Jane Doe or anyone else in a position where their safety, security or welfare was threatened in any way whatsoever. I'm so sorry for everything that's happened."Through tears, Bucklew told the court, "I'm not a predator. I'm not a threat to the community. CHICANO PARK (KGTV) -- A man was rushed to the hospital after being shot near Chicano Park Friday night, San Diego police said.A caller reported the man shot near Chicano Park on National Avenue and Dewey Street at 9:49 p.m. San Diego Police say officers arrived to find a large group gathered in a parking lot and a silver sedan trying to leave.The group fled, including the occupants of the silver sedan. Officers discovered a 15-year-old Hispanic male in the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.Officers started CPR on the teen before first responders arrived to take him to a nearby hospital. The teen died at the hospital, police said.Police say the teen has been identified but his name was not being released.San Diego police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
