In a year filled with uncertainty and anxiety for students across the country, the students at James Faulkner Elementary School have found safety and solitude, not inside their small southern New Hampshire schoolhouse, but in the woods behind it.As COVID-19 cases spiked across the country and school districts agonized over whether to send kids back to in-person learning, students and teachers in this picturesque New England town decided to move classes outdoors. Now, three months into the school year, there’s talk of making these newly constructed outdoor classrooms a permanent fixture for kids, pandemic or not.“We’ve experienced this and seen that we can make it work,” explained elementary school teacher Jacquie Cornwell. “There’s been discussions about whether this is something we want to continue doing. It’s just been such a positive experience for our kids.”Cornwell, 34, has been teaching for nearly a decade. Going into this school year, she was incredibly concerned about her own safety and the safety of her students. Stoddard is home to just over 1,200 people, and the small school building here doesn’t lend itself to much social distancing. So, as the school year began, students here started constructing two “base camps” in the woods behind the school. Each morning, students pack up their books, pencils and snacks and head outside. They even petitioned the town of Alderman to use some of the land that isn’t technically on school property. Now, dozens of kids spent three to four hours a day learning outside. On a recent afternoon this fall, Mother Nature had painted their classroom walls in vibrant orange hues, as the maple trees that surround the property here prepared to shed their leaves for the winter. All of it has helped to foster a learning environment that Cornwell says has been free of stress and anxiety. Something hard to come by during a pandemic.“I’ve noticed that on days when we are outside, negative behaviors really seem to much less than when we are indoors,” she said.Looking around at her students scattered on small wooden benches around the woods, Cornwell can’t help but reflect on how surprised she’s been at how well this school year has turned out.“It’s really turned something that could’ve made this year horrible, sitting in desks, facing forward, not playing with friends, into one of the best years I’ve had in my nine years of teaching,” she said. The New Hampshire air is plentiful out here, which minimizes concerns about ventilation and COVID-19 lingering in the air. There hasn't been a single case of COVID-19 reported here this year. With the risk of spreading COVID lower outdoors, students can even take off their masks sometimes when having snacks or reading in socially-distanced groups. It’s brought on a sense of normalcy for these students, something they’ve longed for since the spring.“The woods have all kinds of sounds, the birds, the planes going by. It makes it feel normal,” said 10-year-old student Brie Bell.Bell and her classmates have taken pride in this outdoor space they've built by hand. They've hung hammocks for reading time and even built a fire pit for the colder months. With coronavirus cases spiking across the country, students here seem genuinely invested in keeping this concept going as long as it means they get to continue in-person learning.“I feel like they’re having these impactful experiences they’re going to carry with them for the rest of their lives,” Cornwell said. 3486

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy plans to introduce legislation this week that will fully fund President Donald Trump's proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border with a whopping .4 billion price tag, a spokesperson for the California Republican told CNN on Tuesday. The bill is still in the drafting process but is expected to be released within the next few days in the pro-forma session this week. The House remains in recess until mid-November, after the midterm elections, so the body would not consider the legislation for another month or so. Even with a Republican-controlled Capitol Hill and White House, any proposal to fully fund Trump's signature campaign pledge of a border wall would have a difficult pathway to passing both chambers of Congress, given the threshold for such legislation and the narrow margin of control in the Senate. The legislation comes as McCarthy is headed to the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday for a tour and briefing by the Department of Homeland Security and as the California congressman continues to push to succeed Speaker Paul Ryan when the Wisconsin Republican departs in January.Mccarthy is not the only House Republican to express interest in leading the caucus. Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and House Freedom Caucus co-founder Jim Jordan of Ohio have talked about pursuing the top House GOP spot, and both are traditionally affiliated with the more conservative side of the caucus members. Scalise has said he would not run to lead the party if McCarthy does, but Jordan has already announced his intention to seek the position.McCarthy, who has allied himself closely with Trump in the last two years, is working on the border wall bill by himself at this point, with no cosponsors. 1757

In a vote Thursday night, the Milwaukee Public School board voted to end their contract with the Milwaukee Police Department. The 8,000 yearly contract allowed for the schools to have up to six officers available to respond to incidents on school grounds.Protesters were asking that the money go toward helping students in other ways. Students and parents expressed concerns about school leadership's willingness to call the police when something happened."We had senior pranks. I don’t think the police should have been called for our senior prank. Bringing eggs and toilet tissue to school. There shouldn’t be police outside of school giving us tickets for doing our senior prank,” said Madison Walker who attended Rufus King High School.Milwaukee has become the latest school district to end formal relationships with local police departments or stop school resource officer programs. In early June, the Minneapolis Public School Board voted unanimously to end their contract with Minneapolis police to have officers on campuses. Portland, Oregon followed soon after. Just last week, Denver, Seattle and two districts in the Oakland area voted to end their formal relationships with local police. Time Magazine reported the presence of officers on school campuses has increased in the last two decades, partially because of the increase in school shootings since the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Prior to Thursday's vote in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Police Department issued a statement."We agree with the many voices from our community who believe that the funding should be reinvested into our public school system to support social services. Regardless of the vote, MPD will continue to support MPS and MPS students," they wrote. This story was originally reported by Julia Marshall on TMJ4.com. 1844
