SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse who works for the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department says. According to the department, the nurse has been isolated at home. No other information was provided about the individual's condition at this time. The department says it has identified inmates and staff who may have come into close contact with the nurse. A total of nine employees are considered at low exposure risk. We have been providing comprehensive education to staff on how to reduce chances of exposure and infection. We are continually updating communications with employees to include the latest best practices for combating the virus through training bulletins, signage at Sheriff's facilities and daily updates via email. We have implemented social distancing, virtual meetings, working from home, as well as paused non-essential meetings, travel and training. We have hand sanitizers, cleaning wipes and disposable gloves readily available to employees," the department continued. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit has now been filed surrounding the platform collapse that injured 21 children and some adults last November at Vault PK parkour gym inside a Barrio Logan warehouse.Two mothers and six children are represented in the complaint, filed against Vault PK and San Diego's Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS), among other defendants.MTS owned the warehouse and subleased the space to a business that subleased again to Vault PK. A few days after the collapse, MTS was hit with a dozen building code violations.Some of the families are suing MTS and Vault PK for negligence, among other complaints.MTS told 10News it won't comment on pending litigation.  713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man died after crashing his car into a ditch overnight Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened on I-5 north near Clairemont in East Mission Bay. Officers say they believe the single-vehicle crash happened sometime overnight, but wasn't reported until the sun came up. According to CHP, the car crashed into a ditch on the side of a freeway. Officers say it's too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.  521
