SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - A former Team USA figure skater has filed suit against the U.S. Figure Skating Association and skating coach Richard Callaghan for allegedly sexually abusing the skater between 1999 and 2001, including at a skating competition held in San Diego.The suit, filed this week in San Diego County Superior Court, alleges that Callaghan sexually abused Adam Schmidt starting at the age of 14, even after reports surfaced alleging he had abused another skater.Callaghan -- perhaps best known for coaching Tara Lipinski to an Olympic gold medal in 1998 -- was accused of molesting another former skater, then-15-year-old Craig Maurizi, in a 1999 New York Times article.RELATED: Figure skater Ashley Wagner says she was sexually assaulted by a former coachSchmidt alleges that figure skating officials brought the article's allegations up for an internal review, but then dismissed the allegation "as it claimed the victim had not filed a formal written grievance within 60 days of the sexual misconduct perpetrated by (Callaghan)."Schmidt claims this system "made it nearly impossible for sexual abuse claimants to bring effective complaints forward against perpetrators of sexual abuse and misconduct."As he remained in good standing with skating officials, Schmidt alleges that Callaghan was able to continue abusing him over the course of three years, including at the 2001 Master of Figure Skating competition held in San Diego, when Schmidt was 16.Schmidt says the abuse has left him suffering from "psychological injuries and illnesses" as an adult, including a "psychological breakdown" and hospitalization in early 2017.Schmidt's attorney, John Manly, said "Our client is an extremely talented young athlete who dreamed of nothing more than to stand on an Olympic podium and hear our National Anthem. Instead, he had to stop competing in the sport he loved because of the sexual, physical and emotional damage done to him by his coach, Richard Callaghan."It started getting weird when he would leave his jacket, tie, and shirt on, but then take his suitepants and his underwear off," Schmidt told ABC News.The U.S. Figure Skating Association and the ice rinks where Callaghan worked ignored complaints around him for years. SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A deer mouse found in Warner Springs tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus, San Diego County Vector Control and environmental health officials announced Friday.Vector Control officials said the mouse was found during a routine monitoring operation. Multiple mice collected by Vector Control have tested positive for the virus in areas of north and east county, including Fallbrook, Boulevard, Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero, since January.With each instance, county officials have reminded residents to avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, which can kick the virus up into the air.Residents are advised to use so-called "wet cleaning" methods like a diluted bleach spray, disinfectants or a sponge and a mop to clean up wild rodent matter like urine, feces and saliva. Cleaned areas should also be well- ventilated as well to ensure the virus does not linger.Hantavirus is not uncommon in San Diego County's more rural and undeveloped areas, but residents can avoid exposure by keeping rodents out of their homes, sheds and garages, according to Vector Control. Wild mice, in particular, are the virus' main carriers.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus, which can cause deadly infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain.Residents can prevent exposure to hantavirus by sealing holes larger than a dime and quickly disposing of rodent debris in homes and adjacent structures.The county's Department of Environmental Health can be reached at 858- 694-2888 for more information about avoiding hantavirus exposure and infection. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A son of one of the founders of the Sinaloa drug cartel has appeared in a U.S. court on trafficking and other charges after he was extradited from Mexico. A lawyer for Ismael "El Mayito Gordo" Zambada-Imperial says he pleaded not guilty to the charges in the federal court in San Diego and his next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 7. Zambada-Imperial is accused of smuggling large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Mexico to the United States, as well as the laundering of profits from the illegal drug trade.
