CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) – Police are urging residents to not take matters into their own hands in light of the death of a woman on a popular hiking trail in Carlsbad. In the days since the Nov. 23 stabbing death of Lisa Thorborg at the Hosp Grove Trail, Carlsbad police said some residents have been on the Nextdoor app encouraging others to visit encampment sites to look for the suspect. In a Facebook post, the Carlsbad Police Department asked that citizens not get involved and instead report any tips they may have to police.Police are assuring the community that they are actively investigating Thorborg’s death and searching for the suspect. So far, a tip involving a man seen in the area around the time of the incident has not panned out.RELATED STORIES:Carlsbad neighbors honor murdered woman by finishing her hikeWoman stabbed to death on Carlsbad trail identifiedWoman found dead on Carlsbad hiking trail 921

CARLSBAD, Calif. — A North County company says it's closing in on the technology to keep lithium-ion batteries from igniting. In the last year, the rechargeable batteries have caught fire in Teslas, E-cigarettes, and smartphones. The incidents led to an emergency ban by the Federal Aviation Administration prohibiting shipping the batteries on passenger planes. "The issue has always been there, but now I think because lithium is so prevalent, we're seeing increased cases," said Jenna King, chief executive of Carlsbad-based Amionix.Kings said the industry has largely focused on protecting the battery from the outside, such as through cooling systems and protective layers. She said the batteries ignite due to an overcharge situation or internal short-circuit. Amionix instead is developing what it's calling SafeCore, essentially a circuit breaker on the inside to keep the battery from igniting. "If your battery management fails, or it's never even active because it's an internal short within the cell, our technology is going to protect you," King said. King said Amionix is now working with companies across industries to make sure their product works with their technologies. She declined to specify the companies but said they are well-known. She hopes to have the safety product in consumers' hands by next year, noting that it's inexpensive to manufacture and therefore should have a negligible impact on consumer prices. 1445

CHEYENNE, Wyoming -- On a windswept road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, members of 90th Missile Wing from Francis E. Warren Air Force Base are stationed at one of the critical locales to our nation’s defense system. The only marker is a nondescript, square Air Force building tucked away in the farmlands of Wyoming.  It is the entryway to a place few of us get to see, and the people who control our most power weapons. This secret locale in Wyoming is home to some of the nation’s nuclear missiles, which are hidden deep underground.First Lt. Ramon Ayoade, the combat crew commander with the 321 Missile Squadron, is constantly awaiting word from the US military's chain of command. He was sitting in front of what can hardly be described as state-of-the-art-looking computers. From a 1960s era console, he and another airman control 10 of our country's 400 nuclear missiles. "We are constantly improving our systems. They are old, but they are 100 percent efficient," he said. The older technology is in some ways by design. It can’t be hacked because it’s not connected to Wi-Fi or the internet. These launch facilities are spread across Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska.  Other crews are responsible for missile clusters near Minot, North Dakota and a third near Great Falls, Montana. The missiles are here to deter other countries from attacking the United States or its allies.Second Lt. Seth Hirschauer, the deputy combat crew commander with the 321 Missile Squadron, said there is a chain of command that gives launch orders. "It comes from the President and goes through a few different avenues before it gets to us,” he said. Before nuclear war, airmen must unlock two green lock boxes. Inside the boxes are top secret codes used to make sure a launch command is legitimate and a key needed as part of the process to arm and then send the missile into the air..According to Lt. Hirschauer. two people, each using both hands, are required to launch a missile at the "enable panel." As a safeguard, another crew must do the exact same thing in an identical capsule a distance away.In a simulation, they reenact turning the keys simultaneously to demonstrate how a launch would occur.Within seconds of an actual missile launch, the missile silo door in a nearby field opens and the missile is launched. This team fired an intercontinental ballistic missile last year to prove the process works. It landed in the ocean without a nuclear warhead onboard. In case of a nuclear war, these airmen have enough food to survive for months. The launch capsule where they're sequestered, is actually suspended in a way that if an adversary were to drop a bomb or something above ground, it would violently shake this area but the whole capsule can move and still stay intact. There are massive blast doors, about a foot thick, to help keep the men inside safe.Topside, missile security forces are responsible for making sure no one can physically access the missiles.Master Sgt. Eric Sterman, the flight chief with the 90th Missile Security Forces Squadron, said, "It's very important (to train) because there is a nuclear weapon out here. We have to insure our people can get out here and neutralize any threat that might come out here and try to take our weapon."Though a takeover hasn't ever occurred, the men methodically train as many as eight times a month, knowing full well other countries would love to get their hands on the United States' weapons.  "It's something we should keep in mind sir.  There is that threat and that responsibility," Master Sgt. Sterman said.Whether topside or below, all say their mission isn't one publicized frequently but they believe it's an essential part of keeping all of us safe. 3828

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Wednesday kids tried out for the reboot of Kids Say the Darndest Things during a casting call at Legoland. Some families were selected as they entered or left Legoland, while other families sought out the try-outs.Representatives say hundreds of children were interviewed to see if they are a good fit for the national show, hosted by Tiffany Haddish. The kids, age 4-11, waited in a tent with their parents to be called in. "They come in and let it go and it is just the most hilarious thing ever," Casting Producer Cevin Middleton said. In the tent, we asked a few of the kids random questions and hilarity ensued."I'm funny!!!" Aliyah said. She was very concerned about putting on the microphone for the interview, saying she thought she might get "electrified." When asked where she would go if she could travel anywhere in the world, she said she would go to China for limited edition Shopkins. One little boy jumped into an interview saying emphatically, "I like to fight with them! [You like to fight with dragons?] Yeah, like that little dragon over there," he said pointing."I was the leader of my friends and then when I'm going to leave to somewhere else I picked one of my friends to be the leader of the other girls," seven-year-old Lila said. She and her dad were in town from the Bay Area having fun at Legoland when they found out about the tryouts."[What do you think is the coolest imaginary creature?] Probably a unicorn because they can fly, they can do magic and their poop is ice cream," Xayla said her dad told her unicorns poop ice cream. In all the silliness, there were a few gems, "I like to dance mostly, it calms my nerve down mostly and it helps me with my stress," Ariannah said she stressed about not being able to do something."I want to show other kids that even though you say you can't dance, like you can do it... dance comes from your heart and your passion," she said she dances and helps her sister dance to get through difficult times. The first episode of Kids Say the Darndest Things will air this Fall on ABC. 2082

California health officials are warning residents not to eat oysters from British Columbia, Canada, following a norovirus outbreak.About 100 people got sick in California after they consumed the raw oysters, health officials said."As of April 27, approximately 100 individuals have reported illness after they consumed raw British Columbian oysters sold by restaurants and retailers throughout the state," the California Department of Public Health said."Laboratory testing has confirmed norovirus infection in several patients from both California and Canada. Although the number of reported new illnesses has decreased during the last week, the investigation is ongoing."Canada has reported 172 cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of raw oysters."Avoid eating raw and undercooked shellfish, including oysters, to reduce your risk of illness," said Dr. Karen Smith, a public health officer in California."If you do eat shellfish, cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F. Quick steaming isn't sufficient to kill norovirus."Norovirus is spread through the ingestion of infectious virions, which grow in the small intestine before being expelled in feces. Infection usually occurs when someone eats food or drinks liquids that have been contaminated, touches surfaces or objects that are contaminated and then puts their hands in their mouth, or has contact with someone who has been infected, such as by sharing food.Norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach, the intestines or both. A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed.Common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps.  1687
