(KGTV) -- Charles Butler visits homes in San Diego, but he is not trying to sell anything. Butler is a code compliance officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue and makes sure brush surrounding homes is not out of control. “It’s the hillside we’re really concerned about, the canyon rim location,” Butler said. It is Wildfire Awareness Week in California. Assistant Fire Marshal Eddie Villavicencio said approximately 40,500 homes in San Diego are canyon rim properties, next to native or naturalized vegetation. Legally, Villavicencio said those homeowners must have defensible space of 100 feet. Click here for a map of "very high fire hazard severity zones" in San Diego.RELATED: It's wildfire season! Here's how to prepare for the worstOver the last year from March 31, 2018 to April 30, 2019: 9,016 total number of brush and risk assessment inspections were conducted6,854 home were found to be in compliance on the first/initial inspection (approximately 76 percent)2,162 homes required 1 to 2 re-inspections before voluntarily compliance was achieved Only 1 home required forced abatement proceedings A CalFire spokesperson said 70 citations were issued throughout the state in 2018. Records from San Diego County show at least two properties had to do a third inspection last year. This year, no citations have been issued so far locally. “We get more homes in compliance than we do in violation,” Butler said of homes in San Diego. “Educating is the number one priority for us,” Villavicencio added. RELATED: Resource List: Are you prepared for a San Diego wildfire? If San Diego homeowners are found not to be in compliance, they receive a notice of violation. If they don’t comply, they can face a second violation. By the third time, the property owner could be fined 0 and ultimately, forced abatement meaning the City will clean up your home. Villavicencio said a special assessment lien could be placed on your property. Fortunately, it usually does not have to go that far. “People are more proactive and more willing to create that proper defensible space,” Villavicencio said. However, there are challenges including a lack of staffing. Villavicencio said they do not visit as many homes as they would like to per year. That is all the more reason to do your part. “That’s the intent of the defensible space. It’s keeping small fires small, it’s giving fire operations time to respond to the fire and the space to fight the fire,” Villavicencio said. 2472

(KGTV) - A San Bernardino County woman is suing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and state Natural Resources Agency for not acknowledging the existence of Bigfoot.Claudia Ackley told The Press-Enterprise she ran into the long-fabled creature while hiking in Lake Arrowhead last year. Ackely said she was hiking late one March day when she and her two daughters ran into a Sasquatch."I ran into a Sasquatch – a Bigfoot. We were face to face. He was 30 feet up in the tree," Akley told the paper. "He looked like a Neanderthal man with hair all over him. He had solid black eyes. He had no expression on his face at all. He did not show his teeth. He just stared at the three of us."RELATED: Woman sues Walmart after saying she slipped on ranch dressing at a Florida storeAckley said her daughter told her she saw two other creatures run away following the encounter, adding that her daughter captured the encounter on video - which Press-Enterprise published online."People have to be warned about these things. They are big," Ackley said. "We’re totally vulnerable to these things."The lawsuit, filed on Jan. 18, alleges the state departments of failing to acknowledge the existence of the Sasquatch species, despite documented and scientific evidence, according to Press-Enterprise. 1350

(CNN) -- It was an impressive disguise: the snow-white beard, the oversized glasses, the wheelchair. But it was when the seemingly frail and elderly passenger reached security at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport -- India's busiest airport -- that he caught the attention of staff. At around 10.45 p.m. on the evening of September 8, the individual was hoping to get on an overnight flight to New York."He posed as if he was very old and incapacitated," Shrikant Kishore, a senior official with the Central Industrial Security Force, told CNN.Dressed in a white tunic and trousers, with a white turban and black slippers, the passenger proved reluctant to be frisked."Our screener asked the person in the wheelchair to stand. He said that he cannot stand. Our screener asked if he would stand with support. He reluctantly stood up."That's when the officer noticed that while the passenger's beard and hair were white, the roots were black. He also was working hard to avoid the officer's eyes. When asked for his passport, the individual handed over documentation claiming that he was Amrick Singh, born in Delhi in February 1938, making him 81 years old."He was definitely not 80 years old. His skin was of a younger person," Kishore told CNN.Upon further questioning, the man told security staff that he was, in fact, 32-year-old Jayesh Patel, a resident of Gujarat state. As he was holding a fake passport, he was detailed by security and handed over to immigration authorities.Kishore told CNN that he doesn't know what the current status of the case is or the reason behind the impersonation.Indira Gandhi International Airport, commonly known as Delhi Airport, is the 12th busiest airport in the world, with close to 70 million passengers traveling through it in 2018. 1792

(KGTV) - An 8-year-old boy who floated out to sea on a giant unicorn raft is safe thanks to a volunteer water rescue team. The Ohio boy, who was vacationing on North Carolina’s Oak Island with his family, was swept away by a gust of wind. He was blown nearly half a mile into the Atlantic Ocean. “From witness comments heard on the beach, and some witness comments we’ve read on social media, it happened suddenly when the wind pushed the raft from shallow water to deeper water in seconds. Once it was out past the waves, the big float acted like a sail and the unicorn float kept going away from the beach,” Oak Island Water Rescue reported. At least one person attempted to swim out to the boy but failed, said OIWR. When rescue teams reached the scene, they launched their boat into the surf and recovered the boy.The boy was safely reunited with his mother, OIWR said. "He was a brave one," rescuer Tony Young told 10News.WWAY-TV reports other floats blew out to sea several times last year, but this was the first time a child was still on board. “A strong wind gust can send a raft on the move. In fact, on days where we have a strong wind blowing toward the ocean, it is not uncommon for us to get multiple 911 dispatches for rafts blown into deeper water,” reported OIWR. OIWR recommends having children wear life jackets when they ride on rafts. Rescuers praised the Ohio boy's courage.“The young man did an amazing job of staying calm and remaining on the float. When Boat 4491 reached him, he told the crew not to pop the unicorn float or they would get in trouble.” Associated Press contributed to this report. 1631
