COPENHAGEN, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here with U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss climate change.     Wen said climate change is a global challenge and an important field for cooperation between China and the United States.     The key to this issue is to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities," said Wen.     The Chinese government has announced its goal of controlling greenhouse gas emissions, which demonstrates China's sincerity and determination to deal with climate change, and work with the international community on this issue, said the Chinese premier. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with U.S. President Barack Obama in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dec. 18, 2009    China has voluntarily launched mitigation measures and put the munder the supervision of domestic law and mass media, said Wen.     China is also willing to carry out international dialogue and cooperation on transparency of its mitigation measures, he said.     The Chinese side welcomes the promise of the United States to provide financial support to the least developed countries, said Wen, noting that the key is to take concrete action to help developing countries deal with climate change.     China is willing to strengthen communication and consultation with the U.S. side to enhance mutual trust, and to push for a fair, reasonable and practical deal at the Copenhagen conference, thus delivering hope and confidence to the whole world, said Wen.     Obama told Wen that the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" should be followed in the global fight against climate change.     Obama said China's emission reduction target is ambitious and impressive and important for the entire world.     As a developing country, the largest challenge China is facing is to develop its economy and relieve poverty, he said. Therefore, China should not be required to adopt the same measures as the United States or other developed countries.     Obama said he appreciated China's willingness to have transparency on its voluntary emission reduction measures. The United States is ready to work with China for a successful Copenhagen climate change conference and to strengthen long-term cooperation in the fight against climate change.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- President Barack Obama said here on Monday the United States would continue to fully support the one-China policy, and would be very pleased to see the improving cross-strait relationship.    "I have been clear in the past the United States supports a one-China policy. We do not want change that policy or approach," he said during a dialogue with Chinese youth in the nation's economic hub Shanghai.     "I am very pleased with the reduction of tensions and improvement of the cross-strait relations," he said. FUZHOU, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold talks in Taiwan's Taichung on Dec. 22, according to Thursday's preparatory meeting.     The two organizations are authorized by authorities in the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait issues.     According to a preliminary agreement, ARATS President Chen Yunlin and SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung will meet for the fourth round of talks since they resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.     Zheng Lizhong, standing vice president of the ARATS, and Kao Kung-lian, vice chairman and secretary general of the SEF, decided the ARATS delegation would visit the island between Dec. 21 and 25.     The agenda was agreed on during the preparatory meeting in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait.     The agenda includes discussion of labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in the fields of inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication, avoidance of double taxation and boosting taxation cooperation.     The two organizations are scheduled to hold a symposium on Dec.23 to introduce the mainland investment to the island.     The ARATS delegation will also tour the Taichung City, the surrounding area and the Sun Moon Lake, and leave the island at noon of Dec. 25.     Zheng said talks between the ARATS and the SEF, which negotiate issues deeply concerned by people of both sides, were "remarkable symbolization of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."     He said it shows the two organizations respect each other and "treat each other as equals" in promoting cross-Strait economic cooperation and improving people's livelihood.     The talks were supported and welcomed by people from both sides, Zheng said, adding the upcoming fourth round of talks would take into consideration the desire of people on both sides and the development of cross-Strait relations.     The two sides also discussed the use of relief funds donated by the mainland to Taiwan to combat Typhoon Morakot in August.     The ARATS received 450 million yuan of relief funds and has already delivered one third of it to the SEF. The rest would be sent to the SEF next week, it said.     Both sides agreed that the funds would be used in rebuilding the island's damaged bridges, schools and public facilities.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China issued a directive Friday that aims to promote renovation of the substandard dwellings in the country's urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines, in a move to improve the livelihood of low-income people.     Renovation of squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories should be completed in the next fives years, according to the directive posted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on its website.     Priority should be given to "the shanty towns covering large areas and with severe safety defects," according to the ministry.     It also urged relevant departments to give full respect to the rights and interests of the people living in substandard dwellings, who are mainly low-income laid-off workers, and to ensure that renovating work be conducted in an open and fair way.     The directive put forward multiple ways to finance the renovation work, including government funds, favorable loans from financial institutions, and tax rebates.     By the end of 2008, China had 11.48 million families living in substandard housing, 7.44 million of which lived in cities, 2.38 million near state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin has called for adequate preparation for next year's annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).     A meeting of the CPPCC National Committee's chairperson and vice chairpersons decided Saturday to open the annual full session of the top political advisory body on March 3 next year.     Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said the session, together with the annual full meeting of the National People's Congress, is of great significance in deepening reform, tackling the global financial crisis, advancing social and economic development, and ensuring stability next year.     Zhao Qizheng, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, was appointed the spokesman for the annual session in March.
