BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, Tuesday called for greater efforts to develop the economies of ethnic minority areas.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remark at the closing ceremony of a seminar on ethnic minorities work for provincial- and ministerial-level officials in Beijing Tuesday.Ethnic minority issues are important and the Communist Party of China (CPC) must properly handle them while governing the country, said Jia, who is also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He said officials must unswervingly implement CPC Central Committee policies concerning ethnic minority issues.He urged officials to improve the livelihood of ethnic minority groups and promote unity among China's different ethnic groups.In properly handling ethnic minority issues, the key is to strengthen the Party's leadership and enhance the abilities of officials at all levels, he said.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also attended the closing ceremony.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday called for accelerated public hospital reforms and the establishment of an essential medicine system to provide better health care.Li, who heads the State Council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing.The essential medicine system planned by the reforms will allow citizens to buy affordable, effective and safe medicines, Li said. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.
