SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A newly formed steering committee is working to drastically reduce the number of hepatitis C cases in San Diego County, it was announced Monday. The county's Health and Human Services Agency and the American Liver Foundation-Pacific Coast Division oversee the Eliminate Hepatitis C San Diego County Initiative steering committee, which also includes members of the public and private medical communities. The aim is to reduce new hepatitis C infections in the county by 80 percent and deaths by 65 percent by 2030. ``By joining forces and strengthening our local efforts, we expect to eliminate this curable disease as a public health threat and improve longevity and quality of life for people living with hepatitis C,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 3 1/2 million people in the U.S. have hepatitis C. The county reported 3,112 new hepatitis C cases in 2017. Most complications from the infection develop over the course of two to three decades, but acute hepatitis C infections can develop within six months after exposure. ``Most people with hepatitis C might not be aware of their infection because they do not feel ill,'' said ALF-Pacific Coast Division Executive Director Scott Suckow. Hepatitis C is generally transmitted through exposure to blood, especially among people who inject drugs and share needles. The infection can also be spread via sexual transmission, but it isn't as common as blood exposure. CDC officials recommend that people born between 1945 and 1965, current and former injection drug users, people with known exposures to hepatitis C and recipients of blood transfusions and solid organ transplants prior to July 1992 get tested for the infection. The steering committee, which met for the first time last week, plans to present its plan to reduce hepatitis C contractions and deaths to the Board of Supervisors by the end of next year. County health officials have already suggested that the expansion of testing and treatment access should be a priority for the county going forward. ``There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but there's a cure, so we'll be working with our public and private partners to try to put an end to the virus in San Diego County,'' Wooten said. 2333

"We know that maintaining a vehicle can add up and our goal is to service drivers' vehicles in a timely and affordable way so they can get back on the road."The facility at 1240 W. Morena Blvd. will be staffed by 20 vehicle service specialists, driver support and onboarding staff.Mayor Kevin Faulconer, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders and other community leaders were on hand for an opening ceremony.The Driver Center is designed like a race car pit stop, according to the ride-hailing company, with technicians working in teams to quickly get repairs completed and drivers back on the road.Available vehicle services include oil changes, tire rotation, and replacement of tires, brake pads, wiper blades, spark plugs, filters and batteries, along with free diagnostic assessments. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday reported seven more deaths in San Diego County due to influenza complications last week, bringing this flu season's death toll to 42.The seven residents were between the ages of 53 and 90 and all had additional medical issues. Only two of them had been vaccinated, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. At this time last flu season, the county had received reports of 281 deaths due to flu complications.The county also saw a new weekly high for lab-confirmed flu cases at 545, according to the HHSA's weekly flu report. The county has recorded 5,486 confirmed flu cases so far this flu season, a far cry from the 17,397 reported at this time last flu season. County health officials touted the data in the weekly flu report as evidence that the current flu season may still be cresting."Influenza is still widespread in the region and continues to sicken San Diegans," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Anyone who has not yet had a flu vaccine this season should get it now."County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of 40 women against Pornhub's parent company for hosting videos produced by former San Diego-based website GirlsDoPorn.com, the owners and operators of which are facing federal sex trafficking charges.The plaintiffs, identified as Jane Does 1 through 40 in the lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Diego federal court, allege Montreal-based MindGeek owns and operates a multitude of pornographic sites that have hosted videos featuring the women, and maintained its business relationship with GirlsDoPorn even as the site came under scrutiny for allegations of videos made through coercion and fraud.The suit alleges MindGeek's business partnership with GirlsDoPorn continued through late 2019 and only ended because GirlsDoPorn ceased to exist amid a Department of Justice sex trafficking investigation and a civil lawsuit filed in San Diego Superior Court.The federal suit alleges that after the partnership ended, MindGeek's sites continued hosting victims' videos, including as recently as Dec. 12."MindGeek knew it was partnering with and profiting from a sex trafficking venture for years," the latest suit alleges. "MindGeek also knew of the significant harassment and trauma GirlsDoPorn's victims were enduring by its continued publication of the victims' videos. MindGeek simply did not care and continued to partner with GirlsDoPorn until it was no longer profitable because of the indictments and arrests."MindGeek did not respond for comment regarding the lawsuit.The company and its most popular site, Pornhub, were featured in a New York Times article this month alleging Pornhub hosts videos featuring rape and child abuse. In the article's wake, several major credit card companies -- including Visa, Mastercard and Discover -- cut ties with the website and Pornhub instituted a ban on videos uploaded by unverified users and removed millions of videos from the website this week.In the Superior Court case originally filed in 2016, GirlsDoPorn's owners were sued by 22 women who alleged they were coerced to film pornographic videos or led to believe their videos would only be distributed to private owners, rather than proliferated online on GirlsDoPorn's subscription website, as well as numerous free sites, many of which are owned by MindGeek.Several of the women alleged they were lured to San Diego with online advertisements that made no mention of nudity or pornography, much less the GirlsDoPorn business name.The women were awarded nearly million earlier this year by San Diego Superior Court Judge Kevin Enright, who ruled the defendants pressured the women to sign documents replete with "broad, vague releases couched in disorganized, complicated legalese," which obscured the victims' concerns over potential online dissemination. Other women hired as "reference models" allegedly spoke to uneasy victims over the phone and claimed they had been featured in prior videos without issue, falsely assuring victims that their videos would not end up on the internet.Once the women discovered their videos were posted online, the website owners ignored requests to take the videos down and cut contact with the women altogether, Enright ruled. The women also alleged GirlsDoPorn's owners shared links to their videos with people within the victims' social circles in order to drive up website traffic.Late last year, prior to Enright's ruling in the civil suit, federal prosecutors filed sex trafficking charges against the site's owners and operators, alleging many of the same claims presented in the civil case. Six defendants are currently charged, including GirlsDoPorn owner Michael James Pratt, who remains at large. 3707

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials broke ground Monday on the Bay Terraces Senior Center, a project that local residents have advocated for since the 1990s. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Cate were on hand to mark the beginning of construction on the 3,400-square-foot facility. Once completed, the million senior center is set to include amenities such as a multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen. The facility will serve seniors in Paradise Hills, Bay Terraces and Skyline, according to the city. ``A decade ago, city leaders laid down a thin layer of gravel in preparation for a senior center in southeastern San Diego that was promised but never delivered,'' Faulconer said. ``Today we are making good on that promise and building a center that will be as great as the communities it will serve.'' Faulconer revived the project in 2016 and city officials expect it to be the city's first building to produce as much energy as it uses by leveraging solar panels on the facility's roof. According to the city, the project is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program. ``This project illustrates the hard work and power of our community to organize and hold elected officials accountable,'' Montgomery said. ``We are pleased to see the Bay Terraces Senior Center start construction and we look forward to the grand opening and visiting the center for many years to come.''
