MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- Summer may not officially start for a few more weeks, but a different season is now in full swing: Farmers Market season.“Our season is April through September,” said Tracy Richter, who oversees the Farmers Market in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.Just when it was about to open this year, the coronavirus pandemic sprouted up, forcing a temporary closure and then requiring changes to comply with social distancing.“We had them set up booths with an entrance and an exit,” Richter said. “So, only one way in, one way out. We restricted the number of shoppers they could have in those booths to two.”Normally, there would be 45 vendors at the farmers market, but they had to reduce that number down to 10 because of the coronavirus. They are slowly trying to get back to normal, though, and plan to add 10 more next week.Richter is lucky – the local municipality funds this market. For other market operators around the country, however, the financial picture is much more dire.“For them, this is a very challenging situation,” said Ben Feldman of the Farmers Market Coalition.He said coronavirus relief funds have bypassed these nonprofit markets, at a time when operators are having to limit the number of vendors and shoppers, as well as spend additional money on virus-related expenses, like personal protective equipment.“Unfortunately, much of the relief to date has left farmers markets out of the equation, even as there have been direct payments for many businesses,” Feldman said.Now, some are in danger of closing – nearly 20-percent of those recently surveyed in California alone. Feldman said the next coronavirus stimulus bill needs to include these markets, which are often a crucial food source and livelihood.“If these farmers markets aren’t able to remain in business, then farmers and consumers are the ones who lose here - because farmers lose their livelihood, consumers lose their access to fresh fruits and vegetables,” he said.Back in South Carolina, Tracy Richter is focused on getting the market through the reality of now and looking forward to later.“Hopefully by next April,” she said, “everything will be more back to normal.” 2188

Moderna is asking American regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine. It says its final results show the vaccine is 94% effective.The drug maker says it had 196 COVID-19 cases so far in its study. It says 185 of those participants received the placebo, while 11 got the real vaccine. The 30 people who became seriously ill in the trial didn't get the vaccine.FDA advisors are expected to look at all the evidence on December 17. They'll be checking out Pfizer’s vaccine on December 10.Pfizer and Moderna's success with their COVID-19 trials could impact how vaccines are made in the future.It has to do with how they work. They use what's called messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The virus' genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce.It hasn't been approved to be used in a commercial vaccine before.“In the future, it's clearly going to be tough to beat RNA vaccines for speed and that's a wonderful thing. Just this demonstration of how incredibly fast they can move has been great. How effective they can be, I think will depend on a particular disease,” said Shane Crotty, Ph.D. with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty says the narrowest application for this vaccine technology in the future is a similar situation where there's a new emerging virus."The mRNA vaccine has been tried for other infectious diseases and they have been investigated for cancer. There's a whole area of trying to vaccine against cancer, which has kind of been an elusive target,” said Dr. Alessandro Sette with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.A big question with an mRNA vaccine is how long its protection will last. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car flipped into the front yard of a home in National City late Sunday night, police say. According to police, the crash happened on the 2500 block of Ridgeway Drive around 11:30 p.m. Police say the driver of the vehicle somehow lost control of the vehicle, flipping over and landing in the front of the home. The car then caught fire, but crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames before they spread. According to police, the crash took out a fence, street sign and a mail box. The driver fled the scene after the crash, sparking a hit-and-run investigation. 609

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A mother of three shown in a video being detained by Customs and Border Protection agents was released Tuesday on her own recognizance.Shortly after 9 p.m. Perla Morales-Luna and her daughters shared a tearful reunion. A judge said that Morales-Luna, 36, isn’t a danger to society or a flight risk. During the family's reunion, she did say "Thank you" to the press but had no further comment. The video showing Luna’s detention made rounds on social media earlier in March. MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Police Department has released body camera footage from the January arrest of Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown.Brown was tased and arrested at a south side Walgreens on Jan. 26 after double parking across two disability parking spaces. It happened at the Walgreens on S. 26th St. and W. National Ave. In a news conference Wednesday evening, new Police Chief Alfonso Morales apologized for the behavior of his officers."I am sorry this incident escalated to this level," Chief Morales said.Watch the full video here: 565
