SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Tuesday for help in identifying a man who robbed a supermarket banking counter in Alpine about four months ago. The thief, who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, approached a teller at the US Bank satellite office in the Albertsons store in the 2900 block of Alpine Boulevard and presented a demand note about 4 p.m. June 4, according to the FBI. After the clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber left the grocery store and fled in a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck. The perpetrator was described as a black-haired, roughly 5-foot-5-inch Latino in blue jeans, a black shirt, tan shoes and a black baseball cap with an ``LA'' logo on the front. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego-based telemarketer was fined nearly million by the Federal Communications Commission Wednesday for making more than 47,000 robocalls over a two-day period leveling false accusations against a local state Assembly candidate and manipulating caller ID information to appear as though a competitor was making the calls.Kenneth Moser and his company, Marketing Support Systems, were fined ,997,750 for making the calls on May 30 and May 31, 2018, about one week prior to the primary election, in which Philip Graham unsuccessfully sought to represent the 76th Assembly District.Shortly before the primary, a woman accused Graham of kissing her against her will in an Encinitas bar, triggering a sheriff's department investigation that concluded the claim was unfounded. Nichole Burgan, the woman at the heart of the allegation, later pleaded guilty to filing a false report.According to the FCC, the robocall messages repeated Burgan's claim and caller ID information was manipulated to make the calls appear as though they originated from another telemarketing company, HomeyTel, described as a competitor to Moser's company. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today publicly identified a U.S. Marine who was fatally injured in a weekend training accident at Camp Pendleton.Staff Sgt. Joshua Braica, 29, was behind the wheel of a MRZR tactical vehicle that overturned Saturday at the military station north of Oceanside, according to Maj. Nicholas Mannweiler of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight more flu deaths were reported last week in the San Diego region, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.There were 264 lab-confirmed cases in total, a slight increase over the 257 cases reported the week of March 25. Emergency room visits by people with flu-like symptoms dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent over the same span, however.Overall, there have been 334 influenza-related deaths in San Diego County this season, compared to 82 during the same period last flu season.Victims have ranged in age from 1 to 101, and most had underlying medical conditions."Unfortunately, influenza-related deaths are still being reported, a sign that the flu continues to take a toll on the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer . "While influenza activitypersists, people should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick, especially getting vaccinated."The high number of deaths this season is related to unusually severe strains of the virus but also improved tracking by local medical communities, according to the county. Overall, there have been 20,404 lab-confirmed cases this season, compared to 5,292 cases this time last year.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds people that it isn't too late to get vaccinated against the flu.
