BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks last Friday with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il in Changchun, capital city of northeast China' s Jilin Province.Kim, general secretary of the Worker' s Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from August 26 to 30 at the invitation of Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said that at present, China and the DPRK are increasing vigorous exchange and cooperation in various fields, among various departments and between provinces along the borders. The two sides have maintained close communication and coordination on issues of the Korean Peninsula and the region.Hu said China is ready to work with the DPRK to carefully safeguard and develop friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.During the talks, Hu put forward three proposals for further strengthening relations between the CPC and the WPK and between the two countries.Firstly, the two sides should maintain high-level contact, which is of great significance to continuously pushing forward the development of the China-DPRK links. Leaders of the two sides should continue to maintain regular communication in various forms.Secondly, the two sides should advance trade and economic cooperation. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank Tuesday announced a rise of its benchmark one-year lending and deposit rate by 0.25 percentage points effective from Oct. 20, a move widely seen as the government's action against inflationary pressure.The People's Bank of China (PBOC) said in a statement on its website that the one-year deposit rate will rise from 2.25 percent to 2.50 percent, and the one-year lending rate will increase from 5.31 percent to 5.56 percent.The rise, the first over the past three years, had not been anticipated and could be related to the impending September statistics and the third quarter statistics, said Jiang Chao, an analyst with Guotai Junan Securities.The CPI (Consumer Price Index), a key gauge of inflation, may maintain its high level in September, Jiang said.The rate hikes are the first in three years. The central bank last hiked rates on Dec. 21, 2007.The benchmark interest rate has been cut four times since the global financial crisis.Li Daokui, a member of the PBOC's monetary policy committee, said statistics showed China's economy has been bottoming out from the accelerated slump at the beginning of this year, but prices of goods remain at a high level, attracting attention from policy makers.Further, policy makers have to seek a balance between economic growth, restructuring and stable prices, Li said."Judging from the move, worries about soaring prices overwhelmed jitters on economic growth, as is the main reason for the interests rate hike. Negative interests rate (higher CPI increases than deposit interests rate) is also another reason," Li said.Liu Yuhui, an expert with the Institute of Finance and Banking at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the interests rate hike this time is related to expectations of inflation as the negative interests rate has continued for seven months.China has been experiencing hikes in prices of agricultural products, urban services like home rents and catering, Liu said."We believed it was caused by soaring labor costs, also related to issue of currencies and soaring living costs in cities," Li said.Prices of garlic, ginger and sugar have jumped in China's market. Sugar prices in Shanghai stood at 6,000 yuan (900.90 U.S. dollars) per tonne, much higher than 2,700 yuan per tonne seen one year earlier.

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. That's in the interests of the two countries' people and benefits regional and world peace and stability," Wang said in an opening speech.Fatih Ceylan, deputy undersecretariat of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said China and Turkey hold similar views on many regional and international issues and have great potential for better cooperation.As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Turkey has worked together with China very well in issues related to Afghanistan, the Palestinians and Iran, he said.Zhang Yuyan, a scholar with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, suggested China and Turkey uphold the principle of " common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change and strive to increase the representation and voice of developing countries in international institutions.Kamer Kasim, vice president of Turkey's International Strategic Research Organization, said it's good for both China and Turkey to increase cooperation in security, energy, tourism and other areas.The forum was a part of a large-scale cultural event termed " Experience China in Turkey", which was held in Ankara and the Turkish city of Istanbul.The event, starting on Sunday and to last till the end of the month, covers nine major activities, including Chinese-Turkish political and economic forums, Chinese movie and television weeks, Chinese cuisine festival and exchanges between journalists and writers.
