ZURICH,July 16 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in Zurich on Friday for an official goodwill visit to Switzerland."The bilateral ties between China and Switzerland have achieved significant progress in recent years. BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and South Africa announced a "comprehensive strategic partnership" on Tuesday during South African President Jacob Zuma's first state visit to China.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Zuma signed the Beijing Declaration after their one-hour talk in the Great Hall of the People Tuesday afternoon, during which the two presidents praised the growth of bilateral ties and agreed to lift relations to new heights."In this new spirit of China-South Africa relations, we will work together to advance the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership," Hu told Zuma.Hu made specific proposals that the two countries maintain close contacts between leaders, utilize cooperative mechanism to further implement bilateral cooperation documents and strengthen exchanges between ruling parties and legislatures.In the economic area, Hu hoped both sides would promote trade and investment growth, energy cooperation and optimize financial services.China and South Africa need to work together in culture, education, media, health and tourism, Hu said, bolstering more academic and research cooperation.On the multilateral front, the countries need to improve consultation and coordination to further South-to-South cooperation and tackle global challenges.
BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have launched crackdowns all over China to curb online soccer gambling as the 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa.More than 100 people have been detained for participating in online soccer gambling with more than 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in funds involved in one case in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, said Dong Xiaowei, deputy chief of the provincial public security bureau.More than 70 gambling groups have been cracked for online soccer gambling this year with more than 300 arrested, he said.Similar cases have been uncovered in Beijing, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Fujian and Shandong.There are about 2,000 Chinese and offshore websites for soccer gambling in China, and the membership of some websites amounts to one million, according to Public Security Ministry data.Gambling is prohibited on the Chinese mainland by law.
TIANJIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Scotland will strengthen cooperation with north China's industrial city Tianjin in trade, finance, education and new energy, according to a joint statement signed by officials from the two sides Thursday."The joint statement highlights Scotland's interest in developing long-term ties with Tianjin in areas such as financial services and renewable energy," said First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, who signed the document.Salmond, who led business groups to Beijing and Shanghai prior to his visit to Tianjin, said he hoped Chinese and Scottish firms could ink deals on renewable energy, finances, and life science.With a potential wind power generating capacity of 36.5 billion watts, the use of wind power in Scotland ranks among the top in Europe. Scotland is also a leader in developing offshore wind power farms.
HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.
