SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Fire is battling a brush fire near East San Diego County on the U.S.-Mexico border. The flames broke out after 11 a.m. near the Cottonwood Creek area off SR-94, not far from Barrett Junction. 100 acres burned in the U.S., with the fire spreading to 650 acres in total by 7:30 p.m. It is 10 percent contained.The fire has a moderate rate of spread and was burning light brush, Cal Fire confirmed to 10News. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City officials say 55 people at the San Diego Convention Center's emergency homeless shelter have tested positive for COVID-19, as cases surge around the country.The individuals who tested positive include those suffering from homelessness and staff at the center, according to the City of San Diego.Those homeless individuals who tested positive will be moved to a local hotel managed by the county for public health use. Staff who tested positive have been notified and advised to stay home. Positive individuals will be kept off-site until it is deemed safe for them to return.The county has made testing available to all staff and residents at the center to halt any further spread and is working to determine if there is an impact to others at the Convention Center.Prior to this round of testing, there had been less than 30 positive tests at the Convention Center over the last nine months, the city says.The city says that individuals utilizing the Convention Center and staff have a daily temperature check and verbal questionnaire and must wear a face covering, and staff clean and sanitize surfaces and hands frequently.The new positive cases as COVID-19 cases surge across the county and state. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Close to 100 people packed the Sherman Heights community center Friday night.Just about all of them were there to tell city officials to back off their plan to set up a homeless storage facility at Commercial and 20th Streets.The city says the plan is not finalized, but they are in negotiations with leasing the building. “We have a playground is about 15 feet from this building,” said Noel Bishop, the principal at Our Lady’s School. “The reality is it’s just an open invitation for people to come back to this community and start living on the streets again… having people in our neighborhood that might be drug users, not mentally stable.”Jonathan Herrera, senior advisor for homelessness for the city of San Diego, says the site is expected to similar to the one on 16th street. It will be a place for the homeless to store their belongings while they visit clinics, classes or go to job interviews.The city is promising to be a good neighbor, stressing the site will have security 24/7.  There will be loitering, drugs or alcohol allowed, and they will have regular waste pick-ups within a block radius.“We are currently looking at other facilities in beach communities, uptown, mid-city and southeastern San Diego to see if we can provide additional services in those areas as well,” Herrera said. He said there were a lot of concerns raised that they are taking into consideration, but the city plans to move forward in the process and bring the plan to the San Diego Housing Commission on March 9th.“The mayor highlighted that the time to develop universal consensus is over and that effort to develop consensus has caused us action, and that’s no longer tolerable,” Herrera added. 1733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County public health officials are urging locals who attended indoor services and events at a Kearny Mesa church to quarantine for two weeks after a COVID-19 outbreak linked to the location.The county says anyone who attended Awaken Church at 7620 Balboa Avenue between Nov. 15 and 22 should quarantine for 14 days after their last date of visiting the church and watch for coronavirus symptoms.Officials added that anyone who was at the church within that time frame should get tested for the virus.Generally, the county does not reveal the locations of community outbreaks and has long advocated against the practice. In this instance, public health officials say it's necessary to, "prevent the spread and occurrence of additional cases," and that, "in this case, public health has been unable to identify and notify all of those exposed."In a letter to the church, the county said while the community outbreak linked to the church doesn't mean that anyone contracted COVID-19 at the location, everyone who has attended events at the location should quarantine for 14 days.A community outbreak is three or more COVID-19 cases from different households within two weeks at one location."You should review your current plans to prevent COVID-19 at your location and determine if there are actions that you can take to reduce the likelihood that your staff, customers, or visitors could contract this infection," the letter said.The county added that anyone who has attended the church, as well as the public in general, should continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, and avoid large gatherings.With the exception of two days, San Diego County has seen new COVID-19 cases spike to more than 1,000 cases a day over the last week.
