A final analysis of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate produced by Pfizer and BioNTech shows that the drug is 95% effective in preventing the coronavirus, and the companies say they hope to apply for Emergency Use Authorization within "days," the company reported Wednesday.The announcement is an improvement from an initial analysis released by the company just over a week ago that showed the drug to be 90% effective. Those results were released when it had been confirmed that 94 participants in the trial who received a shot had contracted COVID-19, and only 10% of those participants who contracted the virus had actually received the vaccine. Updated information now shows that 170 people who participated in the trial have contracted COVID-19, which crosses the threshold for final analysis. Of those participants, 162 received a placebo shot. Of the 20,000 participants who received the vaccine, just one has developed a severe case of COVID-19. The other seven people who received the vaccine and caught the virus are only experiencing mild symptoms.Pfizer also added that the vaccine has proven to be 94% efficient in older people — a welcome sign, given that the virus tends to present more severe symptoms in elderly patients.Pfizer's trial included about 40,000 participants, half of which received the vaccine, and the other half which received the placebo. A federal prosecutor says an ally of President Donald Trump was given special treatment by the Justice Department. The prosecutor is prepared to tell Congress Wednesday that political considerations affected the handling of the Roger Stone case. Career Justice Department prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky says he was told that a U.S. attorney was giving Stone favorable treatment because he was “afraid of the President.” Zelinsky's accusations were made public in testimony released before the hearing by the House Judiciary Committee. A federal judge in Texas is set to hear arguments on whether he should end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a case that could tee up a fast track for the issue to hit the Supreme Court this fall.District Judge Andrew Hanen, a George W. Bush appointee, will hear arguments from seven states that sued over DACA, a program that protects from deportation young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children. The states, led by Texas, argue the DACA program is unconstitutional -- relying heavily on a previous court ruling from Hanen that blocked an expansion of the program and the creation of a similar program for immigrant parents from going into effect.At issue Wednesday will be whether Hanen should immediately order a halt to the program, setting the stage for him to make a final ruling on its constitutionality. 854

A carjacker is dead on Milwaukee north side, shot by the man he was trying to rob according to police.Officers said the shooter was legally carrying a gun and is now cooperating with them.People living near the incident said it is concerning since the attempted carjacking happened around the same time they start their day.Just before 6 a.m. Monday, police said a 21-year-old with a gun tried to steal a car from a man on his way into work. "It's really sad that a person would do that as far as try to rob someone who was going to work," said Kinyata Hendriex who lives nearby."A lot of young people think this is a game and that's it's just only fun. This is not fun," said Milwaukee Police Captain Andra Williams.The victim had a concealed carry permit, pulled out his own gun and fired. People say even if the shooting was justified it is not something someone should have to live with."Life threatened, if you got the opportunity then certainly it's within their right to go ahead and do that. It's sad," said nearby business owner Sean O'Byrne."I think it's a tragic situation. It's sad," said Hendriex.Police don't think the man who was shot was alone. A glitch to the IRS' e-file portion of its website prompted the IRS to push back the deadline to file taxes from today (April 17) to tomorrow (April 18). The IRS said that both individuals and businesses can take advantage of the extra filing day without penalty. “This is the busiest tax day of the year, and the IRS apologizes for the inconvenience this system issue caused for taxpayers,” said Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter. “The IRS appreciates everyone’s patience during this period. The extra time will help taxpayers affected by this situation.”The IRS said that during the system outage, taxpayers were able to file their tax returns electronically through their software providers and Free File.Taxpayers using paper to file and pay their taxes at the deadline were not affected by the system issue, the IRS said. The glitch shuttered part of the IRS' website, not allowing some who file taxes online to complete their taxes.
