URUMQI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were racing to evacuate more than 800 people still trapped by rain-triggered mountain torrents in a remote valley in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late Friday afternoon.Rescuers managed to reach the site in Kuqa County, of Aksu Prefecture, at 1:26 a.m. Friday, about 24 hours after rains and floods stranded more than 1,000 residents, construction workers and tourists in the mountainous area.As of 5 p.m. Friday, more than 170 trapped people, including 120 tourists and some 50 railway construction workers, had been taken to safe places. BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Thursday every primary and middle school student in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County will have new textbooks when the new school semester starts."We have asked publishing houses to rush to print and prepare textbooks for Zhouqu. All of them promised to have them ready by the start of the new semester," ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said Thursday.Schools in Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province are scheduled to begin the autumn semester on Aug. 16.Some 334,075 volumes of textbooks and support material for Zhouqu's primary and middle school students were kept in a storehouse belonging to the local Xinhua Bookstore that was destroyed by the massive mudslides.Primary and middle schools in Zhouqu need 180,000 textbooks for the new semester, the Ministry of Education said.Xu said the publishing houses will send the textbooks to the provincial Xinhua Bookstore in Gansu before Aug. 14.The ministry also vowed to ensure the supply of textbooks to other areas severely hit by natural disasters, including flood-hit Jilin Province in northeastern China.In addition, Xu Mei said poor students from disaster-hit areas entering college will receive preferential treatment in enrolment and in application for loans.The ministry has asked colleges to investigate the financial situation of freshmen from the disaster-hit areas.The death toll due to the massive mudslides in Zhouqu in the early hours of Sunday had, as of Wednesday, risen to 1,117, with 627 still missing.

ENSHI, HUBEI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's most difficult mountain railway was linked up in Enshi Prefecture, central China's Hubei Province, and is expected to open within the year, according to officials at the railway's construction headquarters Wednesday.The Yichang-Yiwan Railway, totalling 377 km in length, runs from the Yiwan District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Yichang City of Hubei Province.It was designed to greatly shorten the journey between the mountainous regions in the southwest and the eastern parts of China, according to Zhang Mei, head of the engineering administration center of the Ministry of Railway.The railway trip from Chongqing to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, for example, will take only five hours once the link is open to rail traffic, instead of the previous 22 hours, said Zhang.The railway was first laid out in 1903 by Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Kuomintang party, over 100 years ago.The reason the construction had not begun till 2003 is that the railway must travel one of the most mountainous regions in China's southwest, whose difficult terrain made the construction work the most difficult in China's railway history, said Zhang."Beneath the luxuriant mountains we encountered myriad natural barriers, such as underground rivers, limestone caves, and coal seams," said Zhang.To link the line, workers had to build 253 bridges and dig 159 tunnels, which account for 74 percent of the total railway length, winning the railway the title of the "tunnel and bridge museum."Starting in late 2003, it took seven years for the construction to be completed, said Zhao Hui, project manager of China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group, which undertook the construction."I joined the project at the age of 25, and now I'm 32. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is completing a nationwide training for presidents of grassroots courts Friday, following the downfall of a group of judicial officials implicated in corruption scandals.More than 3,600 presidents from intermediate and grassroots courts across the country attended the training in Beijing, a year-long-event that focused on raising their awareness of corruption-free law enforcement and improving their abilities in handling social disputes, according to information released by the Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Thursday.More than 80 high-ranking judges, including SPC President Wang Shengjun, delivered lectures during the training, which also covered topics of improving the judges' knowledge in coping with public opinion as well as that of the media."Given the complex and volatile international situation and rising domestic demand for judicial services against the backdrop of emerging social conflicts ...it is imperative to undergo such large-scale training for presidents from grassroots courts." said Zhou Zemin, director of SPC's political department.Over the past year, a string of high-level judicial officials were punished for their involvement in corruption scandals.Among them were former SPC vice president Huang Songyou, who was sentenced on Jan. 19 to life imprisonment for taking bribes and embezzlement and Wen Qiang, former director of the Chongqing Municipal Judicial Bureau, who was executed on charges of corruption charges involving organized crime.Training judicial staff has long been a priority on the SPC's agenda.The SPC spent three years training judges of grassroots courts from 2005 to 2007.Since 2006, the SPC sent lecturers to grassroots courts in the western provinces and autonomous regions. It had 78 million members as of last year."The Party system should open up to the outside world because the Party exists to serve the people and the Party has nothing to hide," Li said at the press conference.Some correspondents from overseas media interviewed by Xinhua said they had known nothing about the school before the tour. Other correspondents from domestic media said it was their first time to visit the school.The school's history dates back to the School of Marxism and Communism set up in March 1933. Late chairman Mao Zedong served as president of the school. President Hu Jintao also served as the school's president and its current president is Vice President Xi Jinping.The school has trained 60,00 high- and middle-level officials over three decades. Its curriculum includes Marxism masterpieces and Party principles, western political theory, economics, contemporary law, religion and military affairs.The school has academic cooperation agreements with government departments, research institutes and universities from nearly 30 countries.The media group found the tour interesting, and some even took photographs of the food menu in the canteen. Some walked around the huge campus decorated with trees and fountains like many other college campuses in the world."It's a beautiful campus. The environment here is a great place for study," said Stephen McDonell, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's China correspondent.The tour of the school was welcomed by many correspondents. The school's spokesman, Luo Zongyi, made his debut at a press conference held Tuesday.Some correspondents from overseas media expressed their wish to know more about how the school plays its role as the highest institution."The tour was interesting and the school is probably less mysterious than people think.
