JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV)-- This was the first weekend San Diegans were able to enjoy the snow-packed mountains. But morning road closures made traveling uphill from San Diego difficult. By early afternoon, most road restrictions were lifted, and thousands of people made their way to the tourist towns. To Teak Nichols, Julian is just home. But he knows it is a special place. Many parts of Sunrise Highway were also shut down due to icy conditions. "In some parts, it was kind of scary. We were sliding a little bit," Aguiar said. Even after they finally made it into town, the waiting continued. Aguilar's main reason for coming up the hill was to get a bite of Nichol's mother's famous dessert at Mom's Pies. "I've tried Julian pies before, but these are the best," Aguiar said. Nichols said it is a recipe that has been kept a secret since 1984. It is a seasonal favorite that sells out, every time it snows."It's gotten busier as the day has gone on," Nichols said. "Apparently, the road opened up, so we got a little bit busier after that."Snow days may slow down traffic and clog up parking, but customers said it is all worthwhile."It's homemade, and it makes it better because we're with family," Aguiar said. As they shift operations outside their tasting room, they are taking advantage of being in a wilderness area with a waterfall, trails to explore and picnic tables in the shade.They are family and dog friendly, and have contracted with a number of food trucks to offer food on site, as well as outdoor tastings in a more intimate setting.Miriam Valdez, Granite Lion Cellars' tasting room manager, said, "We are used to telling people about our wines, now we actually have to limit contact." While also struggling to sell more wine, Valdez added, "We are right now maybe 60-70 days out from harvest, and our warehouse is full, so the wine has to go somewhere."Sommelier David Whited said they're offering specials on cases of wine and wine club memberships, in an effort to move inventory.They're also breaking ground on a brand new barrel cave and tasting room in the hope that one day they'll be able to move back indoors.Granite Lion has retained and retrained their staff in order to stay in compliance with all of the sanitation and safety rules.They've also donated wine to the community -- to be turned into hand sanitizer. Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a liberal federal appeals court judge who was part of a panel that rejected California's Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional, died Thursday, according to a court spokesperson. He was 87.Reinhardt, who served on the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, died of a heart attack during a visit to his dermatologist, according to spokesman David Madden.One of the last remaining federal judges appointed by then-President Jimmy Carter, nearly four decades ago, Reinhardt emerged as a staunch critic of the Trump administration's deportation policies and travel ban in the final years of his life."We have lost a wonderful colleague and friend. As a judge, he was deeply principled, fiercely passionate about the law and fearless in his decisions," Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas of the 9th Circuit said in a statement."He will be remembered as one of the giants of the federal bench. He had a great life that ended much too soon," Thomas said.Trump has slammed the court as being liberal and a symbol of "a broken and unfair" court system.Reinhardt's passing leaves a progressive vacancy on the court for Trump to potentially fill with a conservative vote.Reinhardt was born in New York in 1931. He earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College in 1951 and a law degree from Yale Law School in 1954, according his biography. In 1979, former President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the appeals court, which is based in San Francisco.Reinhardt's big moment in history would come three decades after his appointment.In 2012, he was part of a three-judge panel that struck down California's voter-approved Proposition 8, arguing that the ban unconstitutionally singled out gays and lesbians for discrimination.In a split decision, the panel found that Proposition 8 "works a meaningful harm to gays and lesbians" by denying their right to civil marriage in violation of the 14th Amendment.Five years later, Reinhardt would become critical of the Trump administration.In March 2017, he had some pointed words for President Donald Trump in an opinion issued when the 9th Circuit refused to rehear the travel ban case."I am proud to be a part of this court and a judicial system that is independent and courageous," wrote Reinhardt, "and that vigorously protects the constitutional rights of all, regardless of the source of any efforts to weaken or diminish them."In May 2017, Reinhardt slammed the Trump administration's deportation policies.
