In Santa Clara County, which includes the city of San Jose, the homeless population increased 31% to about 9,700 this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353

SAN DIEGO -- A 9-year-old San Diego girl is using her cookie business to help support other businesses.The 9-year-old, named Daniele, wrote a letter to Kenny Chen, the owner of Onyx Moto in Kearny Mesa, proposing a way to increase business.Daniele is proposing that Chen use Girl Scout Cookies to sell more motorcycles.RELATED: Girl Scout sells more than 300 boxes of cookies at San Diego marijuana dispensary“You can give customers a box (of girl scout cookies) while they sign all those papers. (KGTV) -- Family members have identified three of the four teens involved in a deadly accident in Mt Hope.Three teens died at the scene, a fourth is in ICU at the hospital.Dwayne Heard is Dashaun Heard’s father, one of the teens that did not survive the crash. Dashaun was just 17-years-old. Heard says his family is still in disbelief about what happened, saying his son was a good kid that was outgoing and enjoyed being with his friends.Rose Monta?o is the mom of two of the teens in the car, 17-year-old Daniel and 15-year-old Julian Monta?o. Daniel did not survive the crash. Julian is in ICU and doctors had to amputate one of his legs.Monta?o says her son Daniel had a loving heart, was positive and enthusiastic about life.Both Heard and Monta?o say they still have many questions about what happened that night.The crash happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say an officer ran the car’s plates and noticed it was reported stolen. SDPD says the driver ran a red light, refusing to pull over. According to police, the officer lost sight of the car, but the helicopter followed. Among them were Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Del Arco and Jeri Ryan.Fifty years to the day after the first moon landing, Trekkers got an intergalactic treat at San Diego Comic-Con. At the panel, fans got to see a sneak preview of "Star Trek: Discovery The Third Season" and the new animated series "Star Trek: Below Deck". The biggest applause came when Sir Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard appeared on stage. Stwart returns to the franchise in the new series, "Star Trek: Picard," a story about the Captain after "Star Trek: Next Generation"."I knew that something very unusual was going to happen, and I wanted to be a part of it," Stewart said.
