ORLANDO, Fla. – Friday, the nation remembers one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.June 12 is the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida. On that day in 2016, Omar Mateen opened fire inside of the LGBT club, killing a total of 49 people. More than 50 others were injured.Police shot and killed Mateen during the events of that night. In honor of the shooting victims, Gov. Ron DeSantis has ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-staff on Friday. The Orlando community also plans to hold a tribute and a remembrance ceremony virtually, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.During prior anniversaries, the community has gathered outside the club to remember the victims. This year, the area around the business was closed to public, but survivors, family members of victims and first responders are being allowed to visit. 895

Officials in North Carolina now say that seven people have been killed in flash floods prompted by Tropical Storm Eta.The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte. There, at a local campground, three bodies were recovered and another 31 people were rescued. As of Thursday afternoon, an adult and a child were still missing from the campsite.Elsewhere in Alexander County, another person died when floodwaters caused a bridge to collapse. It was one of four bridges in the country that were swept away by floods, and one of the collapses was captured live by a local TV news channel. The Observer reports that two other deaths were recorded in Iredell County when floodwaters caused a pickup truck to hydroplane and collided with an oncoming car.The New York Times reports that the seventh fatality occurred in Wake County — near Raleigh — where witnesses say a child who had been playing near a creek drowned in a flash flood.According to The Weather Channel, the Charlotte area received seven inches of rain on Thursday, causing creeks and rivers to overflow quickly. Five counties in North Carolina declared states of emergency. The National Hurricane Center reports that Eta, now a post-tropical cyclone, is currently located just offshore of the Carolinas. The storm's outer bands are still bringing rain to coastal areas of the states. 1424

One COVID-19 vaccine in development may be ready for review in December.Executives at Novavax say they are enrolling volunteers for a second phase of clinical trials now. The data should be ready for review within a few months.Phase 1 data showed the two-dose vaccine in healthy adults produced antibodies in all participants. Tenderness and pain were the most frequent local symptoms. When the first COVID-19 vaccines are approved, we won't know a whole lot about their safety.“We’re going to learn as we go along. There are numerous case studies in our experience where, as vaccines were rolled out, we were quite confident with the safety profile, but that evolves,” said Dr. Jon Andrus, adjunct professor at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.“I think that these vaccines will be safe in the sense that they won’t cause a serious or permanent adverse event when tested in 10,000, 15,000, 20,000people,” said Dr. Paul A. Offit with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Hopefully, that will also be true in post approval when it’s tested and seen in 20 million, 30 million people.”Based on other vaccine history, a COVID-19 vaccine will likely produce some sort of adverse reaction. It could be minor typical injection site issues or something more serious.Back in the 1950s, the very first massive polio vaccination program was stopped because it paralyzed some children and killed a handful. In the 70s, the swine flu vaccine caused a very small amount of rare neurological cases. There are other issues like an allergic reaction or seizure.Still though, experts say vaccines are one of the greatest advances in modern medicine in preventing unnecessary deaths.“There is no better cost-effective intervention that medical science has to offer with the exception of safe water and sanitation, so when you look at our life expectancy, vaccines have been incredibly important,” said Andrus. The Vaccine Injury Litigation Clinic handles cases of vaccine-related injuries and deaths. They have on average just over 600 people per year receive payouts from the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. But they admit vaccine injuries are still rare compared to the overall numbers of administered vaccines every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says for every 1 million doses of vaccines that were distributed, one person was compensated. 2413

On Tuesday, the Cruise Lines International Association, which represents 95% of major global cruise lines, said its members would maintain the ongoing voluntary suspension of cruise operations in the U.S. through December 31, 2020.In a press release, its members said it would "use the remainder of the year to prepare for the implementation of extensive measures to address COVID-19 safety with the guidance of outside public health experts and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."The CLIA said those measures include testing all passengers and crew members, expanding onboard medical capabilities, and trial sailings. In the statement, the members said they agreed to extend the suspension to "provide additional time to align the industry's extensive preparation of health protocols with the implementation requirements under the CDC's Framework for Conditional Sailing and Initial Phase COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Protection of Crew. We recognize the devastating impact that the pandemic continues to have on the 421,000 Americans whose livelihoods are connected directly to cruise operations. We will work with urgency to advance a responsible return to cruising while maintaining a focus on effective, science-based measures to protect public health."The cruise industry group estimates that cruises' suspension has resulted in a loss of more than billion in economic activity and 164,000 American jobs. 1444
