LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- While many drivers say a new Caltrans project in the East County is making SR-67 safer, some say it's literally making them sick to their stomach.Long considered one of the most dangerous roads in San Diego County, Caltrans is currently working on a million project to improve safety between Lakeside and Ramona.  A key part of the project is the installation of flexible posts called "channelizers" in the median.  Channelizers are bright yellow so they can be easily seen, helping prevent cars from drifting across the center into oncoming traffic."I think it'll save lives. I really do," Andy Jones tells 10News. Jones regularly drives the 67 for work.However, since the channelizers began being installed over the last few weeks, there have been a handful of reports of drivers becoming queasy.  One man told 10News the way the light reflects off the channelizers at night makes him feel nauseated.  The Ramona Sentinel reports that two people have called the Ramona Planning Board with similar complaints.Driver Donna Gines says the channelizers make her feel safer on her regular drives from Rancho Bernardo to Barona, but she can understand whey they could make some people feel ill."Some people don't react well to reflectors," she said. "It's kind of like a strobe light, maybe? And maybe it does make them dizzy."Caltrans tells 10News they have not received any direct complaints. However, after 10News raised the concern, Caltrans decided to do a review of how the channelizers are functioning.  They plan to send crews at different times of day to see if any changes need to be made. 1663

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) — Parents in Lemon Grove School District pulled their students from class Tuesday to protest against decisions being made, they say, without parent input. In March, 10News covered an emotional Lemon Grove school board meeting when parents fought to retain 16 teachers who had been designated for non-re-election. Those teachers chose to resign rather than have the designation placed on their permanent teaching records. The next regularly scheduled board meeting is Tuesday night, and parents plan to show up again to voice their complaints about the district, ranging from curriculum decisions, resource scarcity and student safety. One parent told 10News behavior issues are increasing in classrooms and the administration is failing to hold students accountable. A decline in classroom resources led her to pull one of her children from the district and enroll him in charter school. Several other parents at the rally say they have done the same, or are considering doing so, due to a variety of complaints. "We are not getting the basic resources and they are making decisions that don't make sense," says Rosa Carney. Tuesday's board meeting will be in open session at 6:00PM at Lemon Grove Library Community Room, 3001 School Lane, Lemon Grove. Law enforcement officials from New York to Florida are examining clues to find the person or persons who sent 10 packages containing what appear to be explosive materials to prominent Democrats, critics of President Donald Trump, and to CNN's New York offices as authorities classify the incidents as domestic terrorism.Three new packages were detected Thursday -- two intended for former Vice President Joe Biden and one for actor-director Robert DeNiro -- each bearing the same markings as the seven packages detected earlier this week. And authorities now believe several of the packages went through the Opa-locka, Florida, processing and distribution center, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.The devices mark one of the most serious attempts to stoke fear and terror in the US in a period that has already seen a number of violent political attacks. The apparent bombs, while rudimentary in design, according to law enforcement officials, targeted two former US presidents, a former vice president and potential presidential contender, and numerous outspoken critics of the Trump administration.Investigators are reviewing security footage from the CNN building and examining the packages themselves for potential clues, according to current and former law enforcement officials."Everything is a clue," a law enforcement official said.As authorities examine clues, they are also finding more questions to answer.One key question authorities are puzzling over is why none of the apparent bombs detonated, a second law enforcement source said, raising questions about the skill and motive of the bombmaker.This person said either the bombmaker was good enough to ensure none would go off and never intended them to explode or it was poorly constructed. Though it appears they were handled through the postal system -- and thus jostled and moved -- without triggering any explosion.William Sweeney, FBI special agent in charge of the New York field office, said Thursday afternoon that the powder discovered with the package sent to CNN did not pose a biological threat but another official said it was undergoing testing.The FBI's counterterrorism team is leading the investigation and has classified it as a domestic terror matter, the law enforcement official said. That classification is based on the absence of other information and could change.The Secret Service, US Postal Inspector Service, and ATF are also working on the investigation with various state and federal offices. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — A poem about the Oct. 1, 2017 mass shooting penned by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department captain was unveiled at police headquarters on Thursday. LVMPD Captain Harry Fagel is a lifelong poet. His poem "The Route" about the 1 October shooting was unveiled at police headquarters, marking the end of a series of 1 October remembrance events. After Fagel wrote the poem, art collector and Nevada School of the Arts president and CEO Patrick Duffy commissioned to have it transcribed onto a scroll by a calligrapher."In our community, there is a much-needed component of healing," said Duffy. "That's what this scroll and poem are essential and we hope is that it will help bring solace to others."The executive director of the LVMPD Foundation said he felt Fagel's words were a reminder of a kind of collective healing that's taken place in the year since the shooting."It was simply mind-blowing that someone could take such an awful tragedy and turn it into such a powerful reminder of the good that exists and the good that responded to that awful event," said Tom Kovach. "The Route" is on display in the lobby of LVMPD headquarters, which is open to the public. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old died following a solo-vehicle crash in Lakeside late Saturday night. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Willow Road around 10:45 p.m. Saturday. CHP says the vehicle appears to have been traveling at “a high rate of speed” when the driver lost control, veered off the road and hit a large tree. Three passengers in the vehicle also received injuries ranging from moderate to major. Monday night, friends confirmed with 10News that a second teen, with major injuries, was taken of life support and his organs were donated to help save other lives. Friends identified the teens as Justin Kyte and Isaac Culkin, both 16-years-old.According to CHP, the right front passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital with major injuries. The two other passengers, a 16-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. A GoFund Me is set up for one of the teens. If you'd like to donate, click here.
