BRUSSELS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China Monday signed an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of disaster risk management between the two sides.European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva and visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement for a joint project totaling 9 million euros (11.7 million U.S. dollars), among which 6 millions euros (7. 8 million U.S. dollars) will come from the EU.As the first bilateral project in disaster prevention, it is aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the EU and its member states.EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (R) shakes hands with visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Nov. 29, 2010. BANGKOK, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo announced here Wednesday that China will provide 10- million-yuan in cash aid to flood-hit Thailand. "China decided to offer Thailand a humanitarian emergency aid worth 10 million yuan and stood ready to provide other help,"Wu said in a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.At least 181 people in Thailand were killed in nationwide floods that hace stricken the country since Oct. 10. BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has ordered a fresh crackdown on the infringement of well-known foreign and domestic brands' intellectual property rights (IPRs).Greater efforts must be made to fight the production and sale of pirated books, audio, video, software, medicine, food and agricultural products, Liu Jinguo, deputy minister of public security, said at a meeting in Beijing Friday, according to a statement posted on the MPS website Saturday.The special nationwide campaign started Friday and will last until March 2011.At a Nov. 5 meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged government agencies to target the root causes of IPRs infringement while strengthening IPRs protection.In a statement Xinhua received Friday, the MPS said Chinese police in a special March 2006 operation uncovered 3,775 cases of IPRs infringement.In a July 2007 campaign conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Intelligence, Chinese police arrested over 20 in connection to the cases.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Chi Jae Ryong, Ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to China, and held phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ROK Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Friday.They exchanged views on issues including the situation of the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement released Friday night by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.Yang said China gives utmost attention to the exchange of fire between the DPRK and the ROK which happened days ago, and is very concerned about the development of the situation.The DPRK and the ROK should exercise calm and restraint, engage in contacts as soon as possible, and solve problems through negotiations and dialogue, Yang said."The pressing task now is to put the situation under control and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents," he said.Parties related should actively work for peace and facilitate talks, jointly safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula while adopting responsible attitudes, Yang said.Parties involved should work together for an early restart of the six-party talks, and push forward denuclearization process of the Korean Peninsula, Yang said.The DPRK, the ROK and the U.S. sides elaborated on their views on the current situation, and expressed the importance they attached to China's stance and their willingness to maintain contacts with the Chinese side.The ROK and the DPRK exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.China on Friday also voiced its opposition to any military acts in its exclusive economic zone without permission, days before a joint military exercise between United States and ROK on the Yellow Sea."We hold a consistent and clear-cut stance on the issue. We oppose any party to take any military acts in our exclusive economic zone without permission," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement Friday.
