JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK (KGTV) -- After four days alone in the desert, Paul Hanks was found injured - but alive - Thursday night. The 54-year-old went missing while hiking the Maze Loop on Sunday, March 11, The High Desert Star reports. He left San Diego on Sunday, but never checked into his hotel. The Maze Loop is the same trail where the bodies of Rachel Nguyen and Josseph Orbeso were found near last October, nearly three months after they were reported missing in July. RELATED: Missing couple in Joshua Tree National Park died in murder-suicideHanks' pickup truck was found in the same parking lot as Nguyen and Orbeso. Just after 4 p.m. Thursday a member of the Joshua Park Search and Rescue team located Hanks, Gerorge Land, the park's public information officer said in a Facebook video. "It appears he fell about 20 feet," Land said. "He sustained some head injuries, we don't know the exact nature of all of his injuries...but he was conscious, he was talking to rescuers."10News is working to learn more about Hanks' current condition. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force arrested the man who designed Schlitterbahn’s Verruckt water slide. John Schooley, 72, was taken into custody Monday night at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals. Schooley arrived at DFW aboard a flight inbound from China. Schooley was indicted last week in connection with the 2016 death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Authorities had been searching for Schooley since the indictment. He faces multiple charges including second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated endangering of a child. Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Jeffrey Wayne Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn, Tyler Miles, the director of operations at the time of Caleb's death, and Henry & Sons Construction Company, Inc., the design and construction company for Verruckt, are also indicted in connection with Caleb's death. The U.S. Marshals said Schooley will be held in Texas pending arraignment and removal to Kansas.  1078

"She cannot learn just giving her an iPad and me teaching her, she has to have one on one contact with a teacher that knows what they're doing," he explained.He believes that for his family the benefits of in-person instruction outweigh the risks during the pandemic.Which is why he was encouraged to hear about San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate's plan to give SDUSD families more options for how kids are taught during the upcoming school year.A statement released by Cate Tuesday reads in part, "As a father myself, I understand the struggle families are going through right now with ensuring their children are receiving a quality education."The plan includes:Offering waivers for in-person instructionCreating open-air classroomsImplementing staggered start timesand providing more resources and financial support for parents who choose to keep their kids home.Although Governor Newsom has said schools can't reopen until the county has been off the state's watchlist for 14 days, there is an option for districts to apply for an exemption that could be granted by county health officials. The exemption only applies to elementary schools.Whether it's through an exemption or other means, parents like Powell say they just want the option to choose. Jodi Doering, a registered nurse based in Woonsocket, South Dakota, had a thread of tweets go viral over the weekend describing the scene inside the emergency room.Among the tweets, Doering said, “These people really think this isn’t going to happen to them. And then they stop yelling at you when they get intubated. It’s like a (expletive) horror movie that never ends. There’s no credits that roll. You just go back and do it all over again.”On Saturday, South Dakota reported a state record of 53 coronavirus-related deaths. The state has a population of 884,000, which is roughly one-tenth the size of New York City. At its worse, New York City was experiencing nearly 700 coronavirus-related deaths per day.According to the COVID Tracking Project, there are nearly 560 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in South Dakota hospitals. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - An 11-year-old girl told the San Diego County Sheriff's Department she was nearly kidnapped Tuesday afternoon near Jamul Primary school on Lyons Valley Road.The child told deputies she was walking on a dirt trail around 3:49 p.m. when she was approached and forcibly grabbed by an unknown man. She was able to escape, suffering only a minor abrasion on her arm.Deputies and the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter searched the area but were unable to find any suspects or evidence.In a sketch released by the department, the man has a distinct scar on his cheek and appears to have a droopy eye. The Jamul Dulzura Union School District is working with the sheriff’s department to keep students safe. All schools in the district will start at their normally scheduled time, but deputies will have extra patrols at Jamul Primary before and after school for the rest of the week.Detectives from the Sheriff's Rancho San Diego Station are handling the investigation. The suspect was described as a thin man who is clean shaven, wearing a dark ball cap, a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and either a red or maroon shoes.  1183
