VIENTIANE, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here on Saturday evening, starting his working visit to Laos.     Wen is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries -- China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar -- to be convened in this Laos capital city on Monday.     According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wen, invited by Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, will meet with Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and hold talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone on future bilateral cooperation.     Wen and Bouasone are scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement in the sectors of economy, technology, coal and e-governance. Wen started his working visit to Laos on Saturday evening by the invitation of Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, and he is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries in Vientiane    After his working visit to Laos, Wen will join with leaders from the other five GMS members as well as representatives from the Asian Development Bank at the summit and attend the opening ceremony of a 1,800-km international road from China's Kunming city to Thailand's Bangkok.     The GMS, established in 1992, promotes economic and social development, irrigation and cooperation within the six Mekong countries.     About 320 million people live within the GMS region, and their common link, the Mekong River, winds its way for 4,200 km. The great majority of these people live in rural areas where they lead subsistence or semi-subsistence agricultural lifestyles.     The area boasts abundant natural resources and huge development potential. With a long history of cultural and economic exchanges among the nations, the area has formed peculiar cultural and economic characteristics based on different folk customs and natural landscapes of the six nations sharing the river.     The first GMS Summit was held in Cambodia's Phnom Penh in 2002,and the second in southwest China's Kunming in 2005. 

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of China's top political advisory body met on Tuesday to call for ideas on rural development and reform.     The Standing Committee of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee will hold its third meeting in mid October. Its major topic is rural development and reform, according to a statement issued after a meeting of CPPCC National Committee chairman and vice chairpersons presided over by Chairman Jia Qinglin.     Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) members will meet from Oct. 9 to 12 in Beijing to discuss major issues about promoting reform and development in the rural areas at the third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     Political advisors are expected to discuss the guidelines reached at the Party session, the statement said. "We shall present research findings our political advisors made about rural development and try our best to put forward as many good proposals as possible to the Party."     At Tuesday's meeting, Jia called on political advisors to take an active part in a nationwide campaign to learn and implement the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The campaign aims to push Party members, especially leading Party members and government officials, to learn how to implement the Scientific Outlook on Development and carry it out effectively.     Political advisors should think about how to implement it in the CPPCC's work to improve its supervision on the ruling Party and participation in state affairs, Jia said.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007. BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called on the country's top scientists to make more contributions to the social and economic development with more science and technology achievements. Wen made the remark while attending a meeting Tuesday for both the 14th Congress of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ninth Congress of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Tuesday that China values its relations with South Africa and would like to work together with the latter to expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation and enhance the understanding and friendship between their peoples.     Wang Gang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Blade Nzimande, secretary general of the South African Communist Party (SACP).     China and South Africa have maintained close high-level visits,frequent exchanges, fruitful cooperation, and coordination in international affairs since their diplomatic relations began in 1998, Wang said.
