LOS ANGELES (AP) — California growers are frustrated by an unusually wet spring that has delayed the planting of crops like rice and damaged others including strawberries and wine grapes.Rice grower Kurt Richter said Tuesday that storms forced him to wait weeks to start seeding his land in Colusa County. And rice that he managed to get into the ground is in a "refrigerated state" because of colder than usual temperatures that threaten to reduce yields.Watsonville strawberry farmer Peter Navarro tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that recent wet weather is disrupting his picking schedule and causing a loss of production.Much of California has seen two to five times more precipitation than is normal for this point in May. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) — California has destroyed more than 1.1 million illegal marijuana plants across 455 grow sites as part of the state's annual campaign against illegal cannabis.Over 13 weeks, the state conducted operations in 29 counties to eradicate the plants, arresting 140 individuals and seizing 174 weapons in the process. This year's campaign was also complicated by coronavirus precautions and wildfires throughout the state."Illegal marijuana planting risks public safety, endangers public health, and devastates critical habitats and wildlife," said California Attorney General Becerra. "Every year, the California Department of Justice works with federal, state, and local partners to hold illegal growers accountable and reclaim our public lands. LOS ANGELES (AP) — All six crewmembers were asleep aboard a scuba diving boat off the Southern California coast when a fire broke out in the middle of the night, killing 34 people who were trapped in a bunkroom below the main deck, federal investigators announced Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report that said five crew members were sleeping in their quarters behind the wheelhouse on the second deck and another below deck when the fire broke out. They were forced to jump overboard when they became "overwhelmed by smoke."The captain and two crewmembers swam to the vessel's stern and reboarded the boat, according to the report. They opened the engine room's hatch but didn't find any fire. With other access routes blocked, they launched the boat's skiff and picked up the other two crewmembers and went to a nearby vessel.Once aboard, the captain continued to send mayday calls as two crewmembers returned to the Conception to search for survivors near the burning wreckage.There were none. 4381
