CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Coronado Unified School District is mourning the loss of one of their most popular crossing guards. Bruce Campbell, or Mr. Bruce as the kids knew him, passed away on Monday. According to his brother, Bruce was at work Monday when he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. Campbell went into cardiac arrest and passed away on his way to the hospital. Students and parents set up a memorial on the corner of Sixth and F Street, where he worked every day for the last several years. His brother tells 10News he died doing the job he loved most. In a statement, the district told the Coronado Times that school counselors will be working with students as needed. Bruce Campbell was 68 years old.  770

CINCINNATI — Jonathan Frierson of Lincoln Heights, Ohio says he's honored to have known Sen. John McCain personally as his bus driver.“Driving the 'Straight Talk Express Coach' for Senator McCain,” Frierson told WCPO. “Got started in 2000. I was a backup driver.”  By February 2008, though, when McCain was running for president and made a campaign stop for a rally at Memorial Hall, Frierson was behind the wheel and standing beside the door when McCain got off the bus.McCain had called him in 2007 to take over, Frierson said.Frierson said he liked that McCain called him by his nickname.“He always called me 'Fry,' ” Frierson said.Frierson flipped through a scrapbook and saw himself in several photos and newspaper articles with McCain, who died Saturday after a long fight with brain cancer.“Felt honored," Frierson said. One picture in a newspaper clipping from Aug. 29, 2008 showed McCain and Frierson sitting side by side at a Skyline Chili. CLINTON, Mo. — A Clinton police officer died and two other officers were hurt in a shooting at a home in the small Missouri town late Tuesday evening.Ofc. Christopher Ryan Morton died in the shooting, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The 30-year-old had been with the department, then returned to the force after a shooting?last year killed Clinton police officer?Gary Michael.In a news conference early Wednesday morning, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:20 p.m. local time in which a woman was screaming in the background. When police arrived at the home, Sgt. Lowe said a man fired at the responding officers from inside the residence.The officers then returned fire and went inside the home. When they went inside, the suspect shot and killed one officer and hurt two others.The officers got out of the home and crews took them to the hospital.The suspect then barricaded himself inside.Around 12:10 am, the Highway Patrol SWAT team went into the home and found the suspect dead. It is not yet known if the suspect died as a result of the gun battle with police or if it was self-inflicted.The injured officers were receiving treatment at hospitals in the Kansas City area, and according to Sgt. Lowe, their injuries are not life-threatening."The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department," said Sgt. Lowe. "They will forge on, but they will need help along the way. We are all saddened by this tragic event. It's one of those things that we realize can happen, but when it does happen, it definitely hits home."Cassie Toliver, who lives near where the shooting took place, said police vehicles, sirens and lights quickly filled the streets and law enforcement barricaded the area from both sides. In a phone interview with Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Toliver said she could hear gun shots around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday."We can still hear shots being fired," said Toliver. "We don’t whether that’s the shooter or the cops because it’s so dark outside.”The two women who called 911 were not injured, Sgt. Lowe said. "We will be speaking with them right away."Sgt. Lowe said Morton had been with the department for a while."It's hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty," said Sgt. Lowe.Tuesday night's shooting happened exactly seven months after Clinton police officer Gary Michael was shot and killed in the line of duty. "It's just another tragic event for this community and this police department," Sgt. Lowe said. "They've endured a lot and they are going to endure more. Everyone's thoughts and prayers would be appreciated."Sgt. (KGTV) — Saturday, a Coronado resident happened upon a pet carrier a cat and kittens abandoned on a sidewalk.The carrier was left near the corner of Ocean Blvd. and Marina Ave., just blocks from Coronado Beach and a dog park, according to Wayne Strickland, who found the animals."Somebody just abandoned them," Strickland said, adding he and his wife found a cat and five kittens inside the carrier. "They thought, 'well there's a place here nobody's going to see and we'll just drop them off and be gone.' The animals were taken to PAWS animal rescue.This may not be the first time pets have been abandoned on Coronado's sidewalks. Strickland added that a Facebook user claimed they too found cats abandoned on Alameda Blvd. two months ago."I don't know what the deal is, if people think they can just come over here and Coronado is a good place where they can just abandon their unwanted litter of pets," Strickland said. "But the right thing to do is take them to PAWS or the Humane Society."Just don't leave them out in the sun, in a little box ... it was a terrible thing to see."The San Diego Humane Society says anyone is welcome to make an appointment to surrender an animal or litter. COSTA MESA (CNS) - The state Attorney General's Office Friday agreed with Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer that Cary Jay Smith, who was recently released from a state mental health hospital and ended up in Costa Mesa, must register as a sex offender.Smith, who is being evaluated at a mental health facility in Costa Mesa after moving around four Southern California counties since his release, could be re-admitted to a mental health hospital, Spitzer told City News Service."They could recommit him or release him," Spitzer said. "But at least now we'll know where he is."That's because the state Attorney General's Office agreed with the analysis done by Spitzer's office that Smith was mistakenly told he no longer had to register as a sex offender. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order that state prosecutors serve Smith with paperwork demanding he register as a sex offender, Spitzer said."They reviewed the paper we submitted and agreed he has to register," Spitzer said.Smith's court files for a conviction in 1983 had been expunged, but there was still paperwork in another case from the mid-1980s that showed he was convicted of a sex crime that required him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Spitzer said.In the other case, the crime for which he was convicted no longer requires defendants to register as a sex offender, Spitzer said."The bottom line is at a minimum he will now have to register," Spitzer said.According to the letter from Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the Orange County Superior Court "informed" his office that "no criminal records were found relating to this individual."Becerra said his office "diligently" worked to obtain documentation of Smith's criminal history and obtained a record that supports Smith's requirement to register as a sex offender.Smith showed up in Garden Grove on Monday and then moved to Santa Ana, but by Wednesday had moved on to a facility in Costa Mesa. It was his eighth stop since being released from Coalinga State Hospital on July 14.Smith was dogged by protests wherever he landed, which included stays in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties.Smith spent 21 years at Coalinga State Hospital for openly fantasizing about raping and killing children."In not renewing the commitment, the state hospital determined that Mr. Smith was no longer a danger to others," Smith's attorney, Staycie Sena, said in a statement. "He has received decades of treatment. We must trust the rehabilitative process."Mr. Smith is under constant police surveillance, is cooperating fully with various law enforcement agencies and is working with mental health professionals to ensure the safety of the community."Sena told City News Service in an email that the protesters who have been gathering outside various locations where Smith was staying were endangering public safety themselves."Please understand that by continuing to chase him down, you are contributing to a potential community disaster," Sena said. "He is being monitored closely by law enforcement officials and working closely with mental health professionals."Releasing his whereabouts so that angry crowds appear is not beneficial to anyone and only increases the risk of community harm."Following his release from the state hospital, Smith stayed in Los Angeles for one night before making his way to Orange, where he checked into a halfway home on July 16, said Sgt. Phil McMullin of the Orange Police Department.Spitzer and Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel issued a statement last week about Smith and sent a letter to Newsom asking for help researching why Smith was no longer required to register as a sex offender despite a conviction and requirement to do so in 1985.Smith pleaded guilty in 1985 to a misdemeanor sex offense against a child, requiring him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Spitzer said.However, in 2005, that requirement was lifted for an unknown reason, Spitzer said."We need to look into this and know why he is no longer a lifetime 290," Spitzer said, referring to the code in the law that requires sex offenders to register with authorities so they can be tracked."We believe he is a lifetime registrant," Spitzer said.Smith was committed to Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino in 1999 on a psychological hold when his wife gave a psychiatrist a letter her husband wrote that described sex acts he fantasized about committing with a 7- year-old boy in his neighborhood in Costa Mesa, according to prosecutors.The state kept him locked up in a state hospital under a civil commitment that concluded he was a danger to children, according to prosecutors. Under that law, he had the opportunity to seek release in a trial every six months.However, during the hearings he testified that he continues to fantasize about sexually assaulting and killing young boys, prosecutors said."He calls himself Mr. RTK," which stands for Rape, Torture, Kill, Spitzer said. "That's what I think has kept him in. He says, `If you don't cut off my penis and hands I will molest again." 5115
