SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to struggling ridership, the City of San Diego has been busy creating a plan to revamp its bikesharing program.On Wednesday staff will provide an update on improvements made and future plans, in response to a grand jury report in 2016.The program, DecoBike, is privately owned but works in partnership with the city.Critics of the program say it has not met the city's needs due to where stations were built.Last year a county grand jury report titled "San Diego's Bikesharing Program Needs Help," outlined ways the city and DecoBike could improve to better serve the community.One recommendation was to put more stations in beach communities, even though local business owners and residents protested them being there.Since then, the city has done the opposite, removing 14 stations from beach communities.City spokesperson Katie Keach says the city and DecoBike are concentrating on increasing the number of stations in the urban core.By doing this, they believe it will provide for a comprehensive system to increase alternative transportation options. They say it will also help the city meet its Climate Action Plan goals.Keach says they hope to have additional stations in North Park, Uptown, Golden Hill and downtown this winter.The city is conducting presentations to community planning groups this fall, seeking public input.Bicycle and climate activists want the program to succeed, saying it's critical to the city's Climate Action Plan.  1486

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For three days, faith organizations from across the country will be in Point Loma for the San Diego National Church Safety & Security Conference hosted by Rock Church.The conference has been held for the last nine years and aims to help churches, synagogues and mosques become safer by providing tips and tools to better prepare for attacks, like mass shootings.Several topics will be discussed including how to work with law enforcement, incident reporting, emergency evacuations and more.There are also many vendors on hand, offering products and services which include surveillance systems, background checking and first aid supply kits.Organizers hope attendees will take away three main points. “Do something, don’t just do nothing. A lot of churches have anything in place, ” said Rock Church safety director Mike Diggs, who spent 20 years in law enforcement. “The other thing is, we want you to learn how to keep children safe at your establishment,” he continued. “And the third is to prepare for a critical incident, active shooter situation, natural disaster.”The event goes on until Friday. The county may something a little extra for your wallet.The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office says they currently have 3,000 in unclaimed county refunds waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.About 1,928 refunds sit on the countywide unclaimed money and unclaimed property tax refunds lists, according to the office. If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. I feel like Robin Hood.”Over the last five years, the office says it has refunded nearly 0,000 to residents.According to the county, the smallest refund amount available is and the largest refund amount is ,333.79, owed to the heirs of Mary Stone. "In the past, sadly, most refunds were never claimed," McAllister said. "So we’re trying a new strategy to let people know about this money. For the first time, we’re mailing 2,407 postcards to people who may be owed a refund, encouraging them to file a claim through our website."Residents can also check online to see if they're eligible.
