BEIJING — China has reported another sharp rise in the number of people infected with COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus, as the death toll neared 1,400. The National Health Commission said Friday that 121 more people had died and there were 5,090 new confirmed cases. The number of reported cases has been rising more quickly after the hardest hit province changed the way it is counting them Thursday. There are now 63,851 confirmed cases in mainland China, of which 1,380 have died. Hubei province is now including cases based on a physician's diagnosis and before they have been confirmed by lab tests. Of the 5,090 new cases, 3,095 fell into that category.Hundreds of cruise ship passengers long-stranded at sea by fears over COVID-19 have finally disembarked and were welcomed to Cambodia by the nation's authoritarian leader, who handed them flowers. Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to let the Westerdam dock after Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines and Guam barred the ship over fears it might spread a virus. The passengers cheered as they walked toward buses to take them to the airport and waved goodbye to other passengers watching from the ship's deck. The Westerdam was unwelcome elsewhere even though operator Holland America Line said no cases of the COVID-19 illness had been confirmed among its passengers and crew. 1360

BLACKWELL, Arkansas — Farmers in Arkansas whose lands have been hit by major flooding are refusing to give up.Robert Stobaugh says the place where his mother and father homesteaded in the 1950s no longer resembles a home. It’s part of thousands of acres of crops on land his family has cultivated for nearly 70 years that’s underwater.Stobaugh estimated some spots to be 18-20 feet deep. He says he managed to get some of their farming machinery to higher ground. They have about 15 rolling pieces of equipment, he said, pointing to the combines.Under the water, crops are ruined: Corn that’s five-feet tall is not really recognizable.“Eighty-five to 90-percent of the corn is ruined,” Stobaugh said. “Fifty percent of the rice is heavily compromised, if not ruined."He said they have endured floods before, but nothing this bad.It will be the toughest year his farming family has ever had.“It’s heartbreaking,” he said.Stobaugh says they haven’t turned a profit in five years, and things have been really tough. Many in the region are feeling anger and frustration. But he says he feels blessed despite it all.He has a new grandchild, and she inspires him to work hard and provide opportunities. Maybe one day, he says, the farm will be hers."Whatever is left, we're going to try to farm it. It’s what we do.” 1320

As computers, tablets and cellphones have become a growing part of our lives, the exposure to blue light emitted from these devices increases. While blue light exposure has been known to cause strain in eyes, Oregon State University researchers studied the effect of blue light exposure on aging. Based on to their findings, exposure to blue light could cause aging to accelerate. For their study, researchers used common fruit flies and exposed them to 12 hours of blue LED light and 12 hours of darkness. To compare, researchers kept a group of flies in total darkness, as well as a group of flies that were exposed to light that had the blue wavelengths filtered out. The researchers said they chose fruit flies because their cellular and developmental mechanisms are similar to humans. The researchers said that flies exposed to blue LED light sustained damage to their retinal cells and brain neurons and had impaired locomotion. Even more stunning, some of the flies, which exhibited some brain damage, were mutants that did not develop eyes."The fact that the light was accelerating aging in the flies was very surprising to us at first,” said Jaga Giebultowicz, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State. “We’d measured expression of some genes in old flies, and found that stress-response, protective genes were expressed if flies were kept in light. "We hypothesized that light was regulating those genes. Then we started asking, 'what is it in the light that is harmful to them,' and we looked at the spectrum of light. It was very clear cut that although light without blue slightly shortened their lifespan, just blue light alone shortened their lifespan very dramatically.” 1708
