There is a good chance this pandemic is having you go to the gas station less often. Fewer trips to the store, after all, means fewer fill-ups.While that may be good for your wallet, it's bad news for governments who rely on gas taxes to fund transportation construction projects. THE ISSUEFor every gallon of gas you buy, 18 cents goes to the federal government and the Highway Trust Fund. That money is then used to pay for transportation projects around the country. Additionally, each state imposes their own gas tax which can range from 14 cents to 57 cents per gallon of fuel. States use that money to fund transportation projects of their own. Simple economics suggest that when Americans drive less, there will be a loss in revenue for states. States are also losing money with sales taxes, tolls and DMV registrations, which is making a problem even worse. WHAT'S BEING CANCELED"The state is collecting less of that money," Alison Black, Chief Economist with the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, said. Black's organization has been tracking which states are cutting projects.Currently, 14 states have announced project delays or cancellations, valued at nearly .5 billion. These include Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. There are 19 local governments and authorities that have announced project delays or cancellations, totally more than .54 billion. Ten states or local areas have vetoed, canceled, or postponed legislative initiatives or ballot measures related to transportation funding because of the pandemic. This includes several major initiatives in California's self-help counties. RELIEF COMING?Many states are lobbying for Congress for a bailout, but that is far from certain. While President Donald Trump, this week, did cut environmental regulations to speed up infrastructure projects, his announcement doesn't address the funding gap. 2017

Three men pleaded not guilty to the charges they face in connection with the death of Ahmaud Arbery in February. Gregory and Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan Jr. all make their pleas Friday morning via video conference. However, the issue that got more attention at the hearing was masks. Bryan's attorney, Kevin Gough, began his client's portion of the hearing discussing masks. He asked for clarification if Bryan had to wear a mask while appearing remotely at the jail. Since he was distanced from others in the jail's video conference room, the judge clarified that he was allowed to remove it. Gough then raised an objection, saying he thought wearing masks referencing George Floyd in the courtroom was a political statement. He was referencing the Arbery family attorney who was sitting in the courtroom. "I do not see masks as being a political statement,” Chatham County superior court judge Timothy Walmsley responded, saying masks were required by public health guidelines and he wore one when he took the bench. "The courtroom is not a place for political statements, not a place for outbursts," he continued, saying if any behavior or actions by anyone in the courtroom becomes disruptive, it will be dealt with. “This is not the place to make a statement," Judge Walmsley said. Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested on May 7 for the February 23 shooting death of Arbery outside of Brunswick, Georgia. Greg McMichael told police he suspected Arbery was a burglar and that Arbery attacked his son before being shot.Arbery was running in a neighborhood at the time. In the charging documents, prosecutors allege the McMichaels chased Arbery before shooting him. Three motorcyclists stopped traffic at a busy Mesa, Arizona intersection Sunday afternoon to help a woman cross the street.The three riders; Eduardo Plascenia, Patrick Patterson, and Damon Pruit, were passing through 8th Avenue and Alama School Road around 1 p.m when one of the riders noticed and signaled to the others that a woman was stuck and stranded in the middle of the crosswalk. "No one seemed to care," explained Eduardo Plascencia. "No one slowed down and no one offered assistance." Video captured from Patterson's helmet shows Patterson and Plascenia turn around and head back to the intersection where Pruit had already stopped.The riders used their bikes to stop traffic and assure that the woman would be able to cross safely.The video shows the woman give a friendly wave to the riders who drive off after the woman is safely across. "She thanked us adamantly. She waved at us and thanked us. She had stopped shaking and had extended her hand to Eduardo and Damon and I behind her," said Patterson.  1060
