As coronavirus cases surge throughout the US, there is an apparent strain on labs conducting tests.Quest Diagnostics said on Tuesday that it is processing 50% more tests per week than at the end of September. This has caused a slight delay in priority tests for high-risk patients and essential workers.“We will continue to expand our physical capacity, with the addition of new testing instruments and related equipment,” Quest said. “We also intend to expand our lab referral partner program. And we will continue to strive to provide the fastest testing for priority patients, which includes those who are hospitalized, pre-surgical or receiving care in congregate settings, such as nursing homes.”LabCorp says it is still processing coronavirus tests in one to two days. The company is conducting 210,000 coronavirus tests per day, but has the capacity to do 300,000 a day. With Thanksgiving just a week away, there is concern that the holiday will cause increased testing demand. In addition, a number of states are requiring visitors to get tested upon entering the state."We are concerned about Thanksgiving," Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, told ABC News. "In terms of post-Thanksgiving surges and testing, we really are going to create as many tests as possible, of as high quality as possible. Get them to as many people as possible."Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said he is concerned that the holiday in part is responsible for the surge in testing from people planning to travel this Thanksgiving.“It’s pretty clear, based on those lines, that a lot of people are going to travel over the holidays,” Baker said. “And there’s not much, at this point, that we can do other than say we think that’s not a great idea.” 1806
As Florida begins to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, the political campaigns of major candidates in Florida are officially on hold. But political ads continued to run on TV even as many Floridians were running for their lives. One attack ad in particular, paid for by the Republican Party of Florida, was on air criticizing the way Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum handled the city's response to Hurricane Hermine back in 2016.The ad, made in coordination with Republican candidate for Governor Ron Desantis, aired frequently in the days leading up to the storm and was only pulled after Desantis was questioned about it, and the GOP said they would eventually pull it from the airwaves amid criticism from viewers and even state officials. 770
Andrea Constand, the key witness in Bill Cosby's retrial on indecent assault charges, testified during cross-examination why she agreed to a .38 million civil settlement in which Cosby did not admit to wrongdoing."I can't speak for him, but I was glad it was over," Constand said in court Monday."(I signed it) because it was a very painstaking process for me and my family, it tore my family apart and we just wanted it over," she added. 448
An adviser to President-elect Joe Biden on the coronavirus is floating the idea of shutting down businesses for four-to-six weeks, and paying people for lost wages."With historic low interest rates, we could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers, for losses to small companies, to medium-sized companies or city, state, county governments. We could do all of that," Dr. Michael Osterholm told Yahoo Finance. "If we did that, then we could lock down for four to six weeks."He said a four-to-six week lockdown could get Americans “cruising into the availability of the vaccine in the first or second quarter of next year, and open the economy before that.” 713
