SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting today, the Port of San Diego is conducting an over-water lighting field test as part of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting Project -- the next step in a process to artistically illuminate a portion of the 2.1-mile bridge span from the Coronado shoreline to Harbor Drive in San Diego.The testing is scheduled to occur between 6:15 p.m. and midnight from Sunday to Saturday, Nov. 14. To allow the testing, 170 computer-programmable color LED luminaires and controllers are being temporarily installed on three of the tallest columns near the center of the bridge span.Each night during the live technical testing, lighting in different colors, combinations, sequencing and arrangements will be intermittently visible on the three columns. Occasional periods of darkness will occur as other aspects of the installation are tested.``This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what's possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront,'' said Marshall Merrifield, port commissioner. ``Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline.''The week of technical testing is intended to evaluate the lighting design that has been developed to date, its technical functionality and its ability to effectively display the range of artistic color lighting as originally envisioned.During the testing, the project team and design consultants will take measurements, collect data, and identify adjustments that may be necessary as the project's design development continues. The testing will also help in better understanding the project's feasibility and capabilities, answer questions related to engineering, design, sustainability, and be used to create an adequate project description for environmental review.This is the second test of the project. The first took place in April 2019 and tested lighting on two columns over land on the San Diego side of the bridge. After the first test was complete, the Port received a Coastal Development Permit in October 2019 for the overwater testing allowing the Port to move forward with this upcoming test.Following a worldwide competition, an international design team consisting of lead artist Peter Fink of Studio Fink LTD, architectural lighting specialists Speirs+Major Associates and Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, was selected to design the artistic lighting concept for the project.As a follow-up to the lighting tests, the Port plans to invite community members to share their input and have conversations with the design group to ensure communication and collaboration and to further develop a signature, bay-spanning illuminated artwork for the region.In addition to public input, and once the upcoming lighting test is complete, the Port will initiate plans to proceed with environmental review as the next step of the project. 3074

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 today to request guidance from the state on allowing resumption of several activities, including private planned events, wedding receptions, hotel conferences, street fairs and team competitions.In a letter to be sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the county will also seek guidance on reopening playgrounds.Supervisor Jim Desmond made the proposal after the board was updated on the county's efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus.Any reopening of those industries, he and other board members said, would only happen with the blessing of Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.He added that while the county must take note of an uptick in community outbreaks, it ``can't have a blanket stop on the economy.''``Maybe, by the time Newsom responds, there will be more time to review this. I want to be prepared with this next group of businesses,'' Desmond said.Because it takes months to plan certain events, such as weddings, planners ``will lose this entire season otherwise,'' Desmond said. ``We have one (board) meeting scheduled for July, and I'm trying to be ready if the numbers look good.''The supervisors also heard from numerous people employed in the private events industry, who urged the board to let them resume. The county ``has hit the community outbreak `trigger' for six consecutive days and recent days have generated not only the highest reporting of new COVID cases but also a doubling of the percentage of total tests being positive,'' Fletcher said after the vote. ``Given these facts, it is reckless and irresponsible to propose expedited reopening of additional in-door close contact group gatherings without any restrictions on the number of attendees.'' 2460

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The body of a 14-year-old boy was found near railroad tracks by a maintenance crew in the Bay Ho neighborhood, sheriff's officials said.At about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the crew discovered someone who appeared to be struck by a train in the area of 6000 Santa Fe St., according to Lt.
