WASHINGTON, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The launch of U.S. space shuttle Endeavour on its final voyage will be no earlier than May 8, after technical problems uncovered last week proved more complex than originally thought, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Sunday.NASA tried to launch Endeavour on Friday on its 25th and final flight to deliver the 2-billion-dollar Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) particle detector to the International Space Station. AMS, a particle physics detector, is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. Its experiments are designed to help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter.The space shuttle Endeavour sits on launch pad 39A as work continues on the shuttle's auxilliary power unit at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida May 1, 2011.However, the launch was called off after engineers detected a failure in one of two heater circuits associated with Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) 1. Heaters are required to keep the APUs' hydrazine from freezing on orbit.NASA hoped Endeavour would lift off on Monday. But further trouble-shooting indicated the glitch was more complicated than officials hoped initially.The failure appears to be a power problem within the aft load control assembly-2, a box of switches controlling power feeds."That basically means the power is not getting out to the heaters that weren't working on launch day," said Space Shuttle Program Launch Integration Manager Mike Moses.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai and several other Chinese cities have moved to restrict home purchases in a bid to deflate bubbles in the real estate market.The rules, which were revealed by Shanghai's Housing Guarantee and Administration Bureau on Saturday, prohibits new home purchases from locally-registered families who have owned two or more homes and non-local registered families who have owned at least one home.Additionally, non-Shanghai registered families who have no documents certifying they have paid for social security or income tax in the city for one year are banned from buying property.Sales of commercial homes fell 42.4 percent year on year in Shanghai in 2010 as earlier measures to curb the speculative demand in the real estate market took effect.Despite the fall in sales volume, the average price of new commercial homes rose by 7.6 percent to 20,995 yuan (3,200 U.S. dollars) per square meter last year.On the same day, authorities in the eastern city of Nanjing and the northeastern city of Harbin rolled out similar purchase restrictions.On Wednesday, the Beijing municipal government unveiled even tougher measures to prohibit home purchases from non-local registered families who have no proof of social security or income tax payments in the Chinese capital for five straight years.The purchase limits came after the State Council, China's Cabinet, ordered late last month that cities where home prices are skyrocketing must implement strict measures to restrict home purchases over a period of time.The State Council also said that local governments will be responsible for the stable and healthy growth of property markets and are required to publicize, before the end of March, the annual "controlled" price targets for new homes.China has implemented a series of measures since last year, which includes higher down payment and lending rates, and bans on mortgage loans for third homes, to rein in the rapid rise in housing prices.Soaring prices have become a major concern for urban Chinese residents as more homes turn unaffordable. LOS ANGELES, May 25 (Xinhua) -- NASA project managers bade farewell to the Mars rover Spirit on Wednesday after sending a final set of commands to the stranded vehicle.This marks the completion of one of the most successful missions of interplanetary exploration ever launched, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said."Last night, just after midnight, the last recovery command was sent to Spirit," said John Callas, the Mars Exploration Rover Project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Los Angeles."It would be an understatement to say this was a significant moment. Since the last communication from Spirit on March 22, 2010, as she entered her fourth Martian winter, nothing has been heard from her."NASA has tried in vain to regain communication with Spirit since it got stuck in sand about two years ago. The rover last communicated on March 22, 2010, as Martian winter approached and the rover's solar-energy supply declined.NASA checked frequently in recent months for possible reawakening of Spirit as solar energy available to the rover increased during Martian spring, but to no avail.A series of additional re-contact attempts ended on Wednesday, designed for various possible combinations of recoverable conditions, according to JPL."Our job was to wear these rovers out exploring, to leave no unutilized capability on the surface of Mars, and for Spirit, we have done that," said Callas.

LOS ANGELES, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of homes were evacuated on Wednesday in Monument, U.S. state of Colorado after hydrochloric acid was leaking from a train car, authorities said.The leak was first reported around 1 a.m. local time when a southbound train spotted a vapor trail on a northbound train, the Denver Post reported.Authorities first ordered the evacuation of some 255 homes, and later expanded the evacuation to an additional 160 homes, according to the report.Schools in the area were closed due to the leaking, the report said.A specialized crew from Texas has been dispatched to the scene to transfer the hydrochloric acid leaking from the train car and is expected to finish the job in four or five hours, weather permitting, the report quoted Sgt. Mike Schaller of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office as saying.The leak is contained but hydrochloric acid is still leaking slowly from the tanker, which holds 25,000-30,000 gallons, Schaller said.He said police went door-to-door notifying residents of a subdivision adjacent to the railroad tracks to evacuate as a precaution.No injuries have been reported, he said, but residents have been warned that they may have to be out of their homes until Friday as hazardous material crews offload the acid to another container.The northbound train originated in Kansas and was en route to Denver at the time, the Denver Post said.It's not yet known how much hydrochloric acid leaked from the train car.Once the leak is sealed, crews will remove the hydrochloric acid from the damaged car to a new car that will likely continue into Denver, according to the report.Monument is a town of 3,230 residents 88 kilometers south of Denver.
