But the Goddess of Heaven was against their marriage and when they ascended to heaven as two stars, she separated them by the Milky Way.But, according to the story, magpies felt sorry for the lovers and so every year fly up to the heaven to form a bridge, so that the lovers can reunite for a single night.Moved by the story, Chinese began to celebrate love on the date of the couple's annual reunion since the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. to 220 A.D.). In 2006, Qixi was listed as an intangible cultural heritage by China's State Council.Now as many couples are separated by work or study, people have begun looking for their modern "magpie bridge" to unite them in virtual space, enabled by the Internet.Jin Jing, a magazine editor based in Beijing, 26, planted "a tree of love" in her virtual garden, a game application on the social networking site, Kaixin001.com."My husband is working in Shanghai, and I wanted to give him the tree as a Qixi gift. BRASILIA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Tuesday, expressing the government's regret over the tragedy caused by mudslides in northwest China's Gansu province."The Brazilian government learned with deep regret of the avalanches" that killed at least 1,117 people, with 627 missing in China's Gansu province, the statement said.Brazil also expressed its solidarity with the Chinese government and people, offering condolences to the families of the victims.The devastating landslide, which occurred Saturday in Zhouqu City, Gansu province, also destroyed numerous houses and buildings.So far, a total of 567 survivors have received treatment while 64 seriously injured have been hospitalized, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.

HONG KONG, Aug.12 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks slipped nearly 190 points Thursday as heavyweight HSBC dropped 1.84 percent.The benchmark Hang Seng Index dropped 188.83 points, or 0.89 percent, to close at 21,105.71 points, after trading between a day high of 21,124.98 points and a day low of 20,926.48 points.Turnover totaled 67.83 billion HK dollars (8.73 billion US dollars), compared with Wednesday's 61.36 billion HK dollars.The H-Share Index dropped 140.61 points, or 1.2 percent, to end at 11,597.02 points.Banking giant HSBC edged down 1.84 percent to close at 80 HK dollars, after a plunge occurred on Wall Street overnight for concerns on global economy.China Mobile, China's dominant mobile carrier, moved up 2.44 percent, to end at 84.1 HK dollars.Major mainland lenders dipped.
