And in less than two weeks, his school and church community are on the way to saving his life.“I would say I was paralyzed with gratitude. West Virginia public school teachers will strike for an eighth day Monday because the state legislature didn't meet their demand for higher pay and better benefits over the weekend.All 55 counties announced school closures for Monday. About 20,000 teachers walked out February 22, keeping almost 277,000 students out of class.Union leaders say the teachers won't return to work until they get a 5% raise.The pay raise remains in legislative limbo. At the state capitol in Charleston, a conference committee has been appointed?to resolve the differences between the state Senate and House.It's not known when the committee will meet, so it's possible the strike could stretch out for days.The waiting frustrates parents, students and union leaders, who've marched and crowded the state capitol for legislative hearings."We're playing with people's emotions, their livelihoods and it directly affects our students," said Christine Campbell of the American Federation of Teachers. "This is unprecedented. It's confusing and I think (teachers are) disheartened by the process."West Virginia public teachers earn?an average salary of about ,000, making them among the lowest paid educators in the United States.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders agreed earlier in the week that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise.However, that raise must be passed as a law, since West Virginia is not a collective bargaining state.The bill quickly passed in the House Wednesday, but Senate lawmakers expressed concern about how the state will fund the raise.Democrats say new revenue projections show the money is there and that a difference of one percent would amount to million.On Saturday, after hours of passionate argument and discussion by lawmakers, the state Senate passed a version of the bill that provides a 4% raise.The House voted not to adopt the 4% version of the bill. With no agreement between the chambers, the conference committee was created.Three members from the House and three from the Senate -- two Republicans and one Democrat -- were selected. The group will have three days to come to a decision about the bill.A brief period of confusion occurred Saturday night after the Senate believed it had voted for the 4% raise. But a House version of the bill, which favored the higher pay raise, had somehow been entered into the Senate voting system and was approved by unsuspecting Senate members. When the error was discovered, the Senate corrected the mistake and re-voted for the lower pay raise.Elizabeth Yost, a teacher from Mercer County, said she was not discouraged by the votes in the legislature."When the events unfolded from there, it was evident we have a representative government in the Senate that abused power last night," she said. But the impact on our blood pressure and cholesterol is just as important.Just ask a young woman who's survived not one, but two heart attacks. She talks about overcoming the odds, and how a heart-healthy diet is helping her fight back.In a small room, it's dinner time. But it's more than a love of food that's bringing these people together. It's a love and appreciation for life."So my name is Michelle," says one woman seated at the table. "I've had two heart attacks."Michelle Melvin and everyone at the table has had at least one close call with their hearts."What did you think when the doctor told you you'd had a heart attack?" The NOW's Kumasi Aaron asked Melvin. "It was disbelief," she responded.Melvin was 41, active and healthy overall when she felt a pain in her temples and her forearms went numb."But, did I ever think heart attack?" Melvin recalls. "No. I was 41 years old. That doesn't happen happen when you're 41." Her first thoughts? Her 8 and 10 year old sons.Melvin says, "It was just more of that sacredness of I can't, I can't die. With these babies at home still."She changed her diet and lifestyle but five years later, she had another heart attack."It wasn't supposed to happen again you know?" Melvin says. "You're not supposed to get it twice."Doctors diagnosed her with SCAD, a rare heart disease that mostly affects young women."The patients that it affects frequently are super healthy patients," says Kasier Permanente Cardiac Registered Nurse Amanda Bloom. "These are women who are out there doing marathons, they really take good care of themselves that's kind of what's so scary about it."Bloom started the support group. She wanted to make healthy eating a big part of it, because of its impact."It can really greatly reduce your risk of having another heart incident," Bloom says. "And for someone who hasn't had one it really reduces the risk of ever having one."Bloom prepares the dishes herself. Kale apple and pecan salad, and butternut squash and lentil soup. When it comes to eating heart healthy, Bloom says fruits, dark leafy greens and vegetables are key.For Melvin, the guidance she gets from Bloom about eating heart healthy is giving her important confidence."It kind of like jump starts," Melvin says. "It's like okay I can do this. Drizzle with one teaspoon of olive oil. Massage kale for a couple minutes to tenderize.Sprinkle a little lemon juice over apples to keep them from browning.Mix together kale, apple, pecans, and cranberries.Toss with dressing and serve. Start with ? cup of dressing then add more as needed to taste. With NFL preseason games scheduled to be held next month, several outlets are reporting that the NFL will reduce the number of preseason games teams play from four to two.Pro Football Talk and ESPN reported the change Wednesday afternoon, but the league has not made an official announcement.Pro Football Talk said that the league decided to eliminate Week Nos. 1 and 4 of the preseason. The report says that in addition to teams not wanting to travel large numbers of personnel amid a pandemic, with a lack of offseason workouts, coaches indicated a preference to hold extra practices instead of preparing for exhibitions.The length of the preseason has been considered too long by some in the past, as most teams opt to play reserves for the fourth and final game of the preseason. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging Americans not to travel this holiday season, it's clear that many will choose to do so anyway.Between Nov. 25 and Nov. 29 — the height of the Thanksgiving travel surge —the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) said it screened about 4.5 million travelers. While that represented 39% less travelers than last year, it represented the most travelers the agency had screened since the start of the pandemic.With another surge in travel expected for Christmas and New Year's, the TSA has offered some helpful tips when it comes to packing luggage for the holiday season.Packing giftsDo not pre-wrap gifts: Gifts need to be screened like any other piece of luggage, meaning gifts need to be unwrapped if they need to be inspected. The TSA suggests wrapping once you reach your destination, or wrapping in a gift bag.Be sure to pack gifts that contain large amounts liquid, like perfumes, gel candles or snow globes, in a checked bag. TSA allows containers with 3.4 ounces of liquid or less for carry-ons.Snowboards, snowshoes and ice skates can be carried on, but be sure to check with airlines about a plane's overhead bin space. Skis and ski poles will need to be checked.Packing foodHomemade baked goods and other treats can be carried on, but any sort of jams, jellies or syrups are liquids and should be checked if they're in a container larger than 3.4 ounces. A rule of thumb? "If you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, then it should be packed in a checked bag if the container is larger than 3.4 ounces."Higher-proof alcoholic beverages (between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume) are limited in check bags to five liters a passenger.
