The French leader -- who has been dubbed a "Trump whisperer" by some -- has forged one of the closest relationships Trump maintains with any world leader, some of whom he has openly feuded with or belittled. But beneath the outward bonhomie is an underlying competitiveness, according to US and French officials familiar with the two men's relationship. Both are alpha males highly attuned to their own reputations, and each entered office with grand promises of shattering their country's political status quo. Officials in both countries have downplayed the notion of a "bromance," insisting the two men are not close personal friends but rather closely aligned allies.Ever since May, when the two men met for the first time inside the US ambassador's residence in Brussels, fascination has swirled around their relationship. That first meeting was marked by strained grins and a lengthy, white-knuckled handshake that immediately went viral online.Even before that session, which occurred on the sidelines of a NATO summit, Macron has carefully approached his interactions with an unpredictable American leader. He studied videos of Trump's handshakes, which sometimes include a firm tug inward. He and his aides continue to closely monitor Trump's Twitter feed for a daily reading of the US President's mood and his shifting policy sentiments.Perhaps most shrewdly, Macron recognized that Europe's other dominant leader, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, would be permanently tarnished in Trump's mind after fostering deeply personal ties to President Barack Obama. Long averse to his predecessor's policies and platforms, Trump has viewed Merkel as irrevocably tied to Obama, according to people who have spoken to him.Macron has cast himself as a blank slate, without a pre-existing relationship that might color his interactions with Trump (though Macron has met privately with Obama, and even secured Obama's endorsement during his campaign last spring).Merkel will visit the White House on Friday with none of the elaborate trimmings associated with a state visit. Once the favored European leader for US presidents, including Obama and President George W. Bush, Merkel got off to a frosty start with Trump and struggled to recover. The two leaders went more than five months without speaking earlier this year. 2324
The first woman to conduct a spacewalk was Russian cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya in 1984, followed closely by NASA astronaut Kathy Sullivan. An additional 12 US women have conducted 40 spacewalks over the past 35 years. Koch and Meir will be 13th and 14th, respectively.Koch and Meir spoke about women working in human spaceflight during a recent news conference."I think it's important because of the historical nature of what we're doing and that in the past, women haven't always been at the table," Koch said. "It's wonderful to be contributing to human spaceflight at a time when all contributions are being accepted, when everyone has a role and that can lead, in turn, to increased chance for success."There are a lot of people that derive motivation from inspiring stories from people that look like them and I think it's an important aspect of the story to tell," Koch said."What we're doing now shows all the work that went in for the decades prior, all of the women that worked to get us where we are today," Meir added. "I think the nice thing for us is we don't even really think about it on a daily basis, it's just normal. We're part of the team, we're doing this work as an efficient team working together with everybody else, so it's really nice to see how far that we've come."Meir tweeted about preparing for the walk."Gearing up for Friday's spacewalk to help the ground teams repair one of the battery channels with @Astro_Christina. . . . first spacesuit selfie, check! Photos will be much more spectacular once we pass through the hatch. Be sure to watch live: https://nasa.gov/live"Koch and Meir will be replacing a faulty battery charge/discharge unit that failed to activate after a spacewalk October 11, according to the agency. Because the unit is faltering, it's keeping newly installed batteries from providing an increase in power to the station. The space station is powered by solar arrays and four sets of batteries. Luckily, the faulty unit hasn't changed anything for the astronauts or experiments on board. The unit regulates the charge in the batteries from the solar arrays as the station orbits at night around the Earth.Once the unit is replaced, postponed spacewalks to replace the batteries can be rescheduled.Although floating in space looks easy, astronauts say that spacewalks are one of the most physically challenging things they can do, according to NASA.This is the second attempt at an all-female spacewalk after the first was scrapped in March. For the intended spacewalk in March, Koch was going to be paired with astronaut Anne McClain, who has since returned to Earth. The House’s bill is not expected to move forward. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and President Trump have made it clear they would like the post office funding to be a part of a larger coronavirus relief package.Below is the oral statement prepared for delivery by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy before Monday's hearing by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.“Good morning, Chairwoman Maloney, Ranking Member Comer, and members of the Committee.I’m proud to be with you today on behalf of the 630,000 dedicated women and men of the United States Postal Service. On June 15th, I became America’s 75th Postmaster General. Since that time, for a variety of reasons, there has been a great deal of attention to the Postal Service by our elected officials, the media and the American people.I want to begin by assuring this committee and the American public that the Postal Service is fully capable and committed to delivering the nation’s ballots securely and on-time.This sacred duty is my number one priority between now and election day.To be clear, we will do everything we can to handle and deliver Election Mail in a manner consistent with the proven processes and procedures that we have relied on for years. Nevertheless, I encourage all Americans who choose to vote by mail to request their ballots early and to vote early, as a common sense best practice. As part of this conversation, there are many inaccuracies about my actions that I wish to again correct.First, I did not direct the removal of blue collection boxes or the removal of mail processing equipment.Second, I did not direct the cut back on hours at any of our post offices. Finally, I did not direct the elimination or any cutback in overtime.I did however suspend these practices, to remove any misperceptions about our commitment to delivering the nation’s election mail.Any further assertions by the media or elected officials is furthering a false narrative to the American People. Now let me describe the two actions I have taken in the 70 days since my appointment.I came to the Postal Service with decades of experience in solving large and complex logistical problems.I planned to use this experience to help lead the operating change required for the Postal Service to grow and embark on a path of sustainability. On the day of my swearing in-the Postal Service Inspector General issued an astonishing report about the schedule delays in Postal Service transportation and the substantial cost associated with our weakness in this fundamental operating principle.Upon review, I directed the Postal Service operations team to develop and execute on a plan to improve our adherence to the transportation schedules of our over 40,000 trips a day.We have accomplished this goal-as our on-time departures are approaching 98% and wasteful extra trips are down by over 70%.While we have had a temporary service decline which should not have happened, we are fixing this.In fact, as of last week, service improved across all major mail and package categories, and I am laser-focused on improving service for the American public. The second of two changes I’ve made while Postmaster General is installing a new organizational reporting structure to better align talent and resources, to instill greater accountability for performance and to focus the organization on service and growth. These two changes, creating our new on-time transportation network and designing an engaged functional organizational structure, will be the catalyst for the significant improvements in cost, performance and growth that I plan for this vital American Institution.Madam Chairwoman, the women and men of the Postal Service have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to our mission of service throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In every community in America, we continue to work to keep our employees and customers safe as we fulfill our essential role in delivering the medications, benefit checks and financial statements the public depends upon.Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a public outpouring of support for our postal employees as they performed their essential service throughout the nation. This is a well-deserved testament to their dedication.Chairwoman Maloney; Ranking Member Comer; I hope we can agree that the financial state of the Postal Service is unacceptable and needs to be fixed.I look forward to working with you and this committee and our stakeholders to restore the financial health of the United States Postal Service and to improve the way we serve the American public. This concludes my remarks. I welcome any questions that you and the committee may have.” 4675
The masterminds behind the popular haunted house are Roy and Nikki Jandreau, Herron’s sister-in-law.Herron has been a part of the haunted house since it started, but after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, he had to take a break.“Last year, I couldn’t have been here to even do this interview with you," Herron said. "I was so weak and so sick and tired. I was getting my chemo and getting ready for my surgery, and there was just no way I could be here."He said he had not been feeling like himself. A colonoscopy at the age of 50 found he had a mass in his colon.“If things aren’t working the way they’re supposed to, go (to the doctor) and don’t wait," Herron said. "Cancer doesn’t wait."After more than a dozen rounds of chemo and a surgery, he’s one step closer to being a cancer survivor. He’s scheduled to have another surgery December 5 to remove a mass in his lung.Donations are encouraged if you are planing to visit the Heather Street Klownz haunted house and they will be donated to help Herron and his family during this difficult time.“I don’t know how I could ever repay everybody other than to say thank you and just do the best you can when you come out of this and of course I’m going to support anybody that has this that needs it,” Herron said.Twisty will make his return to the haunted house on Halloween for the final night. 1353
