LONDON (AP) — Scientists at Oxford University say their experimental coronavirus vaccine has been shown in an early trial to prompt a protective immune response in hundreds of people who got the shot. British researchers first began testing the vaccine in April in about 1,000 people, half of whom got the experimental vaccine. Such early trials are usually designed only to evaluate safety, but experts were also looking to see what kind of immune response was provoked. In research published Monday, scientists said that they found their experimental COVID-19 vaccine produced a dual immune response in people who got the shot. 637

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of homeless people counted across Los Angeles County jumped 12% over the past year to nearly 59,000, with more young and old people and families on the streets, officials said Tuesday. The majority of the homeless people were found within the city of Los Angeles, which saw a 16% increase to 36,300, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority said while presenting January's annual count to the county Board of Supervisors. The previous tally found a slight decrease in the homeless population. Two years ago, voters passed a tax hike and housing bond to make massive investments to help solve the homeless crisis.Officials said Tuesday the same people have not remained on the streets. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a county agency, said it helped 21,631 people move into permanent housing during 2018 — a pace that could rapidly end homelessness if economic pressures had not pushed thousands more into the streets.About a quarter of the people became homeless for the first time in the past year, and about half of those cited economic hardship as the primary cause, the authority said.To catch up, cities need to overcome resistance to the placement of housing and shelters, officials said.Supervisor Janice Hahn called the numbers "disheartening.""Even though our data shows we are housing more people than ever, it is hard to be optimistic when that progress is overwhelmed by the number of people falling into homelessness," Hahn said. The Los Angeles County numbers mirror similar point-in-time tallies across California, as state officials struggle to address a lack of affordable housing. In addition, officials said, wages among lower income people have not kept up with the rising cost of living. The count found a 24% increase in homeless youth, defined as people under 25, and a 7% jump in people 62 or older.Officials estimate about 29% of people experiencing homelessness in L.A. County are mentally ill or coping with substance abuse problems.About two-thirds of all people on the streets are male, just under one-third are female, and about 2% identify as transgender or gender non-conforming. 2159

Looking to undermine rival Joe Biden 20 days before the election, President Donald Trump’s campaign has seized on a tabloid story offering bizarre twists to a familiar line of attack: Biden’s relationship with Ukraine. But the story in the New York Post raises more questions than answers, including about the authenticity of an email at the center of the story. The origins of the story also trace back to Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has repeatedly pushed unfounded claims about Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Even if the emails in the Post are legitimate, they don’t validate Trump and Giuliani’s claims that Biden’s actions were influenced by his son’s business dealings in Ukraine. The email reportedly is from Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to Burisma’s board, and reads thank you "for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent (sic) some time together. It’s realty (sic) an honor and pleasure.” The Biden campaign told the Associated Press that it could not find a meeting between the then vice president and Pozharskyi on Biden's schedule. Given that the emails came directly from Trump's representatives, there are questions on the authenticity of the emails, which the Post reports came from a device left by Hunter Biden at a repair shop. Meanwhile, Twitter and Facebook have announced that they're limiting the spread of the post while they work to validate the report's authenticity. Even if authentic, the report would appear to still violate Twitter's anti-hacking guidelines."The policy, established in 2018, prohibits the use of our service to distribute content obtained without authorization. We don’t want to incentivize hacking by allowing Twitter to be used as distribution for possibly illegally obtained materials," Twitter said in a statement. The social media platforms were criticized by Trump supporters on Wednesday for alleged censorship. 1911

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Memorial Day may be the unofficial start of summer, but California is heading toward the holiday with rainy, windy and snowy weather.A winter weather advisory is in effect Wednesday for the mountains of San Bernardino and Riverside counties east of Los Angeles. The National Weather Service says there could be up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow at elevations from 5,500 to 7,500 feet (1,676 to 2,286 meters) and up to 8 inches (20.3 centimeters) at higher elevations. To the north, the Sierra Nevada is finally free of winter weather advisories. The Squaw Valley resort at Lake Tahoe reports it got 32 inches (81.2 centimeters) of snow over the past seven days, boosting its season total to 714 inches (1,813.5 centimeters).Unsettled weather will continue into next week. 801

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- "The world is ready to heal," said Ashley Judd when asked about "Me Too" and the Time's Up movement and her date to the Oscars, Actress Mira Sorvino. Both women have accused Harvey Weinstein of harassment and both are part of the Time's Up movement. In October 2017, The New York Times published Judd's and other women's accounts of sexual harassment by the Hollywood producer. In the interview, Judd recalled an incident where Weinstein "sent her up to his room, where he appeared in a bathrobe and asked if he could give her a massage..."Sorvino's accounts of Weinstein's behavior are similar. The actress told The New Yorker that she rejected Weinstein's advances, but found it difficult to land roles after doing so. On the Red Carpet Sunday night, both women were asked what the Time's Up movement meant to them. Both said they're fighting for all women to have equality and respect in all industries - not just in Hollywood. Their appearance on the red carpet together is a symbol that speaks nearly as loud as the all black dress code of the Golden Globe Awards in January.   1147
