GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A California man has been arrested over allegations that he and his partners ran a billion Ponzi scheme that targeted people receiving pensions.News outlets report the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Future Income Payments LLC owner Scott Kohn on Saturday in San Diego. The 65-year-old has been on the run since March when authorities in South Carolina secured fraud indictments against him.Court filings say the company provided cash advances to veterans and others that would then be repaid by their pensions. Traders weren't told the advances had interest rates that could top 240%. The upfront money came from investors who were promised up to 8% back on their investments.An April letter to investors says about 25 states are investigating or have taken action against Kohn's company. 823

Grocery workers continue to be on the front lines during the pandemic.United Way and Kendall-Jackson are now teaming up to get grocery workers more help through a national relief fund they've created.“What we have seen across the county in other disasters natural disasters is that initially there's this outpouring of support and people want to donate, but then it really starts to wane and lag just as the needs are starting to get even bigger,” said Suzanne McCormick, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide.The Grocery Worker's Relief Fund will be available to anyone currently employed by a grocery store.The fund will be giving out 0 per person on a gift card. Anyone who applies will also be connected with the 211 social services helplines in their area to see if they have other needs.United Way says housing insecurity is one of the top issues people are calling 211 about right now.Mental health has also become a much bigger concern among the people who are calling.“While people might call for financial assistance our call specialists who are trained as they start to enter into dialogue, they do discover that there's more there that the person might have anxiety,” said McCormick. “They might be in a domestic violence situation or have very serious mental health issues.”Grocery workers can start applying for the relief fund on October 1 on the United Way website. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters on Tuesday that his office is investigating 1,000 possible cases of “double voting” from this summer’s primary and runoff elections.Raffensperger, who didn’t cite specific instances of potential voter fraud, said the state would seek to prosecute offenders.Georgia, like all states that have both in-person and mail-in voting options, have safeguards in place to prevent voters from casting two ballots.. “When voters who have requested absentee ballots show up at the polls to vote in-person, poll workers are supposed to call the county elections office to determine if the voter’s mail ballot has been counted, before the voter casts a ballot at the polls,” according to Common Cause Georgia, a nonpartisan organization that tries to build public participation in government.The Georgia primary was notable for long lines and lost mail-in ballots, creating confusion.“At the end of the day, the voter was responsible and the voters know what they were doing,” Raffensperger said. “A double voter knows exactly what they were doing, diluting the votes of each and every voter that follows the law.”Common Cause Georgia executive director Aunna Dennis agreed that violations should be punished, but added that the confusion might have caused some to unintentionally violate the law. The date of the Georgia primary was moved twice due to the coronavirus.“We wholeheartedly agree that people who intentionally vote twice should be subject to the usual criminal penalties for election law violations,” Dennis said. “But we are concerned that voters who were simply trying to vote may get caught up in the dragnet.
