A new study takes a closer look at the impact the amount of time children spend on cell phones, computers and TV is having on their brains.“What they're finding, or what they're reporting, is that more screen time--in fact a lot of screen time, around 7 hours a day--is associated with changes in the brain and changes in cognition,” says Rachel Barr, a developmental psychologist.Dr. Barr studies the impact TVs, computers and cell phones can have on young children.Kids between the ages of 8 and 12 spend generally six hours a day, while teens are spending nearly nine hours.While Dr. Barr agrees too much time can have negative impacts, she points out what children watch on their devices matter.“Exposure to education programing in younger children is associated with better outcomes and especially for children who are growing up in low resourced communities,” Dr. Barr explains.As for what parents can do: set time limits and ground rules, like keeping screens out of the bedroom, which can make it easier for children to fall and stay asleep.“Setting up this family media plan, being mindful of your own media use and your child's media use, even though you're being bombarded by all of these changes in media yourself,” suggests Dr. Barr. 1254

A mother in Clarksville, Tennessee has been charged after the death of her 4-month-old daughter.Officials said they responded to a home in the 200 block of Orleans Drive after 11:30 a.m. Saturday on a call of an unresponsive child.Officers found the 4-month-old not breathing. They performed CPR, and the baby was taken to Tennova Hospital where she failed to regain consciousness and passed away.Detectives investigated the infant’s death leading to a criminal homicide charge against the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Sarah Danielle Scribner.A witness, identified in a police affidavit as Aeriel Shiraef, told authorities Scribner called her and said she'd done something bad. Scribner allegedly told Shiraef she had stopped the baby from crying by putting her hand over the infant's mouth. She added the infant was no longer breathing.Scribner was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.  916

A San Francisco lawmaker has introduced an ordinance that would make it illegal to make a racially-biased 911 call within the city limits.According to KPIX-TV in San Francisco and The Los Angeles Times, San Francisco City Supervisor Shamann Walton introduced the "Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies (CAREN) Act" on Tuesday.The CAREN acronym is a play on the name "Karen" — the name social media users often label those who make racially-based 911 calls in viral videos.In a statement to NBC, Walton said that the act would "make it unlawful for an individual to contact law enforcement solely to discriminate on the basis of a person's race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity."The proposed legislation is similar to a bill currently making its way through the California State Assembly. A suspicious package targeting billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros was rendered safe in Bedford, New York on Monday, a law enforcement source told CNN.The Bedford Police say they received a call reporting a suspicious package found in a mailbox. The package appeared to be an explosive device, police said.An employee had opened the parcel. The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford Police, according to a news release.The package did not detonate on its own, the law enforcement source said. 547

A police officer in Colorado is on leave after comments he made on Facebook that allegedly threaten violence in the wake of the presidential election, according to multiple reports.The police chief in the town of Platteville became aware of the officer’s comments Wednesday afternoon and the officer was immediately placed on leave, according to The Denver Post.The officer, identified in media reports as Jason Taft, posted the following comments on Facebook on Wednesday:“If for some reason we lose do we get to be little bitches and beat the hell out of the other party like they did,” Taft wrote in his post, which was still publicly visible Thursday afternoon. “Because they don’t believe in what we do. In fact in case we actually let Biden win. There will be far fewer results than this year because we’ll help them find God. Democrats you were scared of Trump now’s the true time to be afaird.
