FLORIDA — Kratom is a natural plant native to Southeast Asia that has been used in the region for decades, but it's fairly new to the United States.Some people say it's helped them in reducing pain and has helped addicts recover. But others say it's dangerous and could even be deadly. Experts said it's been linked to deadly overdoses. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) identified 15 deaths connected to Kratom from 2014 to 2016. The FDA records at least 44 Kratom related deaths in the last decade. One of these deaths is 27-year-old Christopher Waldron. His mother, Laura Lamon says he was her only son and the love of her life.  On July 17th, 2017 she got a call from Tampa police. “He [investigator] said your son is deceased. I lost it. I just started yelling and I don't remember much after that,” Lamon said. Lamon thought that he had overdosed on narcotics, but a month later she received an autopsy report that indicated the cause of death was intoxication by Kratom, and strictly Kratom, according to the Hillsborough medical examiner. "I was shocked and then when I got it. I thought, 'What is this?' I had found some things in his room and I saw the packages of what he had taken but I didn't know much about it,” Lamon said. Director of SalusCare Steven Hill says one of the biggest dangers with Kratom is that it’s not regulated or monitored. “You never know exactly what you're getting. Anything could be in the packaging. There could be different levels of the active substance,” Hill said. Lamon believes that if the plant was properly labeled, her son would have survived. “There was no label on it at all. it didn't have a dosage amount, didn't have a warning label, didn't say don't mix it with this or that, if you have this condition, or whatever. a bottle of Tylenol has that on there,” Lamon said. She says that it is so devastating because her son didn’t want to die. She doesn't necessarily want to see Kratom banned, but thinks it should be researched and much more regulated.“It absolutely should be banned, it’s like playing a game of roulette,” Steven Hill, director of SalusCare, said. Adrianna Marrone, manager of Up in Smoke in the Cape says Kratom came to the U.S. recently, and now it’s one of their best sellers. “Just to help with the aches and pains and anxiety and depression,” Marrone said. A former addict, Amanda Raska, says that Kratom helped her overcome drugs. “He told me about Kratom and that day I tried and I never touched another pill, it literally saved my life,” Rasksa said. Raska said she started using Kratom five months ago when a friend who was also an addict told her about it. Before using the plant, she couldn't get out of bed without taking prescription pills. “It was a horrible life, I have 5 kids so i could not even take care of my children,” Raska said. She said that she grew up around addicts and has an addictive personality, but said Kratom isn’t addicting. If she goes without it, there’s no symptoms of withdrawal.Steven Hill says that he saw firsthand how people react to the drug. “It’s happened on our detox where people are coming in and the issue is with Kratom,” Hill said. Hill said the experience of taking Kratom can be described as a quick down feeling followed by hallucinations and visualizations. In 2016, there were less than 100 poison control calls regarding the drug, and by the middle of 2018, the number of calls were approaching 700. “So we're seeing more and more use and we're seeing the health concerns and health issues also go up. ER visits spiked,” Hill said. In August 2016, the DEA announced an intent to ban Kratom, but after strong reaction from the public, it was labeled as pending analysis. “We've seen and heard of people who have very bad reactions. people who have had to be hospitalized,” Hill said.  3982

FREDERICK, Colo. – A chance encounter between a Firestone man and the mourning father of Shanann Watts Wednesday night has led to a new effort to repurpose many of the stuffed animals left at a memorial at the Watts home for other grieving families.Trent John and his son were driving through the neighborhood in Frederick where Shanann lived with her two daughters Wednesday evening when they stopped by the home and noticed Shanann’s father, Frank Rzucek, and brother, Frank Rzucek, Jr., out in the home’s driveway.John said he immediately recognized them and decided to get out of the car and introduce himself.“I said, ‘Hey, I’ve been in law enforcement for a long time and I know these teddy bears are going to get donated to somewhere,’” John said on Friday. “’Would it be OK with you if I took them and with the smaller ones, I gave them back to police departments to hand out, and then take the bigger ones and turn them into some kind of a blanket or something that we could distribute to fire departments and police departments here locally and across the nation?’”He said his offer was met “with some tears and a lot of appreciation” by the Rzuceks.“I gave her father a hug and we shed some tears and shook each other’s’ hands,” John said. “Now we’re going to get to work.”So on Thursday, John and some neighbors who were taking the memorial down filled up his Suburban with some of the leftover teddy bears and other stuffed animals. He says he’s coordinated with about a dozen friends who know how to sew and says that they’re drafting plans for the blankets.John said he’s hoping to find out the favorite colors of the Watts girls, Bella and Celeste, to “design something in honor of them.”“I think that service is a great way to mourn with those that need comfort, so that’s what we’re going to try to do,” he said.He said the smaller stuffed animals would be cleaned and donated to local police and fire departments, who can in turn give them to kids in crisis situations. The others will be turned into blankets and other items. John said he would be setting up a private Facebook page to ask for fleece donations and other items necessary in coming days.“I hope we can take that and share that love in moments of crisis in someone else’s life,” he said.John believes that something put him and the Rzuceks in the same place at the same time earlier this week for a reason.“What’s the chances of my day and his day aligning right then and there? I actually do think God say, ‘Hey, you know, here’s someone who has a big heart and can put people together and get something done that’s beautiful and helpful.’” John said. “Looking back on the moment I met [Shanann’s] father, I think it was just an alignment of a grieving family and someone who is very involved in the community, and our paths just happened to cross.”And he hopes that his small gesture is supported by others in Colorado and across the community who have tried to support Shanann’s family.“As human beings there’s no way to grasp what happened here,” John said. “But we do know how to come together, we do know how to love each other and we do know how to lift up the hands of those that are in mourning.”Rzucek himself responded to a Facebook post made by John discussing the encounter: “Thank you Shanann would want to give back to people who need god bless you all thank you Frank”. 3377

FRESNO, Calif. (KGTV) - More than 200 Marines and Sailors from Camp Pendleton have been helping in the Creek Fire fight for nearly two weeks."This is why Marines sign up, this is why they join the Marine Corps, is to serve," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said during a trip to The Sierra National Forest last weekend.The 233 Marines and Sailors with the 7th ESB deployed September 19th after a day of firefighting training on Camp Pendleton. Lt. Col. Mesta said this task force is equipped with the right tools to pivot on a moment's notice to an unconventional mission like this."Like we say in the Marine Corps, 'Any Climb, Any Place.' We like to adapt to our environment and anything that is asked of us," Operation Chief Master Sgt. Juan Guillen said.Mesta described the mission at the Creek Fire as a lot of manual labor, "really hard dirty work with some long hours."Master Sgt. Guillen said Marines and Sailors wake up at 5:30 a.m., wash up, and go to a briefing. Then they head out around 7:30 a.m. and work the fire line until around 6:30 p.m. That's an 11 hour work day every day, with breaks to keep them safe."They're assessing any hot spots any areas that could potentially flare up." Master Sgt. Guillen said there is also a night shift that patrols with the same mission.Master Sgt. Guillen acknowledged how difficult the work is and said Marines and Sailors appreciate what firefighters do. He said one of the differences in this work is where the heavy backpack filled with supplies sits on your back as a firefighter.He said Marines are used to having a heavy pack that sits high up on the back. This versus what they use on the fire line, which is much lower, closer to the waist to allow for bending and work closer to the ground.During their deployment, containment of the fire jumped 22% to 44%, making a tangible difference that hits close to home."It's an honor to be back here and help out the community. I spent a lot of time up here camping near where the Creek Fire's at." Master Sgt. Guillen said he grew up in Fresno, his parents were migrant workers in the fields.He said he's thankful to see businesses nearby opening back up now that the fire's threat is dwindling."We're here to support as long as needed and the mindset of the Marines and Sailors that are out here is that mission accomplishment is our priority," he said.All of the Marines and Sailors at the Creek Fire volunteered for this mission. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he’s concerned about the accuracy of COVID-19 test results.In a news conference Monday, he said there have been several cases where people received positive results, even though they had never been tested in the first place.“For that to come back positive, when there was no specimen submitted, is problematic. So I’ve heard it enough to be concerned about it," said DeSantis.People have said they submitted their contact information at a COVID-19 testing site, but after seeing how long the line was, they decided not to wait an hour or more to get the test. Nevertheless, a few days later, they got an email or a phone call telling them that they tested positive.Representatives at the Centurylink Sports Complex testing site say false positives aren’t possible there, because of how they have it set up.The Florida Department of Health says, at Centurylink, you submit your contact information right before you get tested. So if somebody were to get out of line, they wouldn’t have had the chance to hand over their phone number or email.But not all testing sites are the same.We reached out to Lee Health, which operates several testing sites of its own. Those sites operate by appointment only, and they do take contact info beforehand, but Lee Health says it has not yet had any issues with mixed up results, and it takes several steps to make sure the results get to the right person.The health system says its sites verify the patient’s identity when they arrive. Then, the person who conducts the test signs and dates each specimen. Former NBA star Lamar Odom is recovering after collapsing at a Los Angeles nightclub over the weekend. His reps say he was dehydrated and that he had an intense workout earlier in the day. TMZ has cell phone video of the collapse.
