It had been more than two weeks that she had been lost in a thick Hawaiian forest, and Amanda Eller was at an end.The 35-year-old doctor of physical therapy was at a place where she could no longer go forward because of the terrain. With a fractured leg and no shoes, she sure wasn't going to go back. The area she found herself in had little to no food. She stayed there for a day and a half and, as Eller's mother and a friend told reporters Saturday as they detailed the rescued woman's ordeal, she began to resign herself to the dire possibility that she might die there."It came down to life and death -- and I had to choose. I chose life. I wasn't going to take the easy way out. Even though that meant more suffering in me for myself," Eller 760

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An 11-month-old Tennessee boy left in a bathtub without supervision has died and his mother is facing charges of murder and abuse after telling authorities she left the child to have some “me time." A hospital spokeswoman says the boy died Friday morning. An arrest warrant says 32-year-old Lindsee Leonardo told police she left the boy and a 23-month-old sibling in the tub Wednesday so she could smoke a cigarette and have some “me time." She told police she was away for about 10 minutes and returned to find the child floating on his back and not breathing. The toddler wasn't injured. 620
Jake Patterson, the 21-year-old Wisconsin man who kidnapped Jayme Closs after killing her parents, was sentenced Friday to two life-without-parole sentences for the homicides and 25 years for kidnapping.Several Closs family members gave statements at the sentencing, talking about how Patterson's crimes affected them.An attorney read a statement from Jayme, who was not in the courtroom."Jake Patterson took a lot of things that I love away from me. It makes me the most sad that he took away my mom and my dad," she said through her statement. " I used to love to go out with my friends. I love to go to school. I love to dance. He took all of those things away from me, too. It's too hard for me to go out in public."Patterson, authorities say, shot and killed James and Denise Closs early October 15 at their home outside Barron with the intent of kidnapping their only daughter, whom he'd noticed by chance just days earlier at a bus stop.He dragged the girl from the bloody crime scene into his car's trunk and drove off, setting off a massive search.Authorities say he held Jayme captive in his cabin some 65 miles to the north until January 10, when the middle-schooler escaped and 1202
Japan’s health ministry says 44 more people on a quarantined cruise ship have tested positive for the virus that causes the new disease known as COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus. The ship now has 218 people infected with the virus out of 713 people tested since it entered Yokohama Port on Feb. 3. Health Minister Katsunobu Kato says five patients now in hospitals have severe symptoms and are on artificial respirators or under intensive care. Japan's government has decided to allow passengers older than 80 to get off the ship after testing negative for the virus. Those with chronic health problems or in cabins without windows will be given priority. 677
