When you think of infrastructure, you may think of the country’s roads and bridges. But some of America’s airports are in major need of improvements, like New York’s LaGuardia Airport.More than 2 million people take to the skies every single day in the United States, and most domestic travelers fly through LaGuardia—one of the busiest airports in the country.From appearance to efficiency, travelers say they expect more for their tax money.Almost exactly one year ago, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced an million overhaul at the airport, stressing the importance of airport infrastructure as a whole. “You have beautiful airports being built all around the globe--Korea, Munich, Dubi, Hong Kong-- magnificent structures,” says Gov. Cuomo. “And for decades, this nation has done nothing.”The last major airport to be rebuilt in the U.S. was at the Denver International Airport more than 20 years ago. Now, LaGuardia is up next; improvements are already underway and expected to be done by 2021.Travelers say the improvements can’t come soon enough. 1070

When it comes to free food, demand is up and donations are down.To help feed the hungry, volunteers have turned a school parking lot into a pantry.“That’s what's important,” said Maria Estrada with the Wyatt Academy, a charter school in Denver, Colorado.Once a week, her teams passes out free bags of food to families and to people like Marco Esparza.“I’m getting some apples and potatoes,” he said.For Esparza, these donations more than just feed his family.“With this kind of pandemic, it helps us to stay safe at home."Since COVID-19 hit, Estrada says more people are requesting food donations across the country while volunteers adjust to the new norm and practice new safety guidelines.“Things are different,” Estrada said about food donation centers. “We now have to make sure everybody is wearing gloves. We want to make sure everybody is being safe. Everybody has their masks on. We’re trying to keep everybody social distanced.”Estrada says the COVID-19 crisis is creating somewhat of a national food shortage crisis. That’s why they’re now partnering with the YMCA.“When COVID hit, YMCAs across the country started to support food programming,” said Katie Canfield with the YMCA.Nationwide, the YMCA has provided 37 million meals to more than one million people in the last six months. That’s an increase of more than 25% since the same time last year as they now deal with new safety regulations.“We are making sure that our community is using hand sanitizer,” Canfield said. “We are currently handling the food and then we hand them the bag when its complete.”Moving forward, the YMCA hopes to go mobile and bring food straight to people’s houses.But for now, they’ll focus on helping feed people in person. 1727

When Allison Weiss Brady and Michael Ladin emerged from weeks of locking down during the pandemic, they needed new clothes in new sizes — for different reasons.Brady, 49, a charity fundraiser from a Philadelphia suburb, had been pulling back on her candy buying sprees during the lockdown and stepped up the cardio workouts at her home gym out of boredom. She lost 20 pounds and went down two sizes. In contrast, Ladin, 58, of Oak Park, Illinois, gained 10 pounds this past spring after sitting around eating chips and dip.“I’m not surprised. If I don’t work out consistently, I gain weight,” said Ladin, who works in marketing.Many Americans like Ladin and Brady are changing clothing sizes depending on how they spent their time sheltering at home. And brands from Levi Strauss & Co. to lingerie label Cosabella are taking note. So are body measuring technology companies, which report that shoppers are changing their measurements on their online profiles.The trend could be good for clothing companies — new sizes likely mean that customers’ wardrobes need to be updated. But retailers, already feeling the pain of decreased spending during uncertain economic times, are also facing an increase in costly returns as shoppers try to figure out their new sizes.“Anecdotally, we’re seeing shoppers come back into stores unsure of their size,” said Marc Rosen, executive vice president and president of Levi Strauss Americas, in a statement to The Associated Press. “For most, it’s been a long time since they’ve tried on a pair of jeans, and they may be up or down a size.”Some companies are even adding larger sizes in response to shoppers’ gaining weight, or what has been dubbed COVID-15.Guido Campello, co-CEO of luxury lingerie brands Cosabella and Journelle, said that his two brands have been adding more generous cuts of some of its most popular styles in bras and sleepwear in recent weeks because of interest from its 2,100 store accounts. Loyal customers at its store locations are also requesting new sizes while making more exchanges.Size fluctuations are bearing out in data from body measuring app Perfitly LLC. It cites a 20% increase in users redoing their avatars in April and May, compared with the same period a year ago, according to the company’s co-founder and CEO Dave Sharma. That spike is similar to what it sees in January after the winter holidays, he says.“Because it is a huge spike, we think it is because of the weight gain,” said Sharma, whose app has about 50,000 users nationwide. “They are sitting around, they don’t go to the gym, and they don’t go for jogs.”Fit Match, a startup firm that’s rolling out 3D technology to scan customers bodies at malls, found only one-third of the hundred women it surveyed in Texas where it piloted its first program had no weight change during the lockdown, says founder and CEO Haniff Brown. Of the remainder, 15% gained more than 5 pounds, while 20% lost more than five pounds. Brown called this change “pronounced,” noting two-thirds of customers typically don’t have any weight change during such a short time period.Narvar Inc., a software company that powers returns for more than 200 brands, says online returns have doubled from mid-March to early June, according to founder and CEO Amit Sharma. Retailers face more than 0 million in expenses from the additional returns in the second quarter, in part because of sizing issues but also because of buyers’ remorse and shipping delays.Brady took advantage of sales and spent several thousands of dollars in recent weeks on a new wardrobe that included, T-shirts, inexpensive summer dresses, and designer sweatshirts. She also sent her new measurements to her personal shoppers at Neiman Marcus and Saks.“I feel great. My (old) clothes are huge,” said Brady, who hadn’t modeled in years but was recently hired on by a local agency.Still, weight fluctuations may be here to stay as surges in new cases around the country force states like California to re-close businesses like gyms and encourage shoppers to shelter at home again.Lauren Wire a 32-year-old publicist who lives in Manhattan, says she worries that another lock down could keep her gym closed during the winter months.She gained back 12 of the 50 pounds she lost leading up to the pandemic because she was ordering in a lot from restaurants and partaking in social distance cocktails with friends. When the COVID-19 pandemic first prompted shelter-in-place restrictions, daycares across the country quickly saw families withdraw their children from their centers. Many lost valuable tuition dollars that keeps their doors open."We've done the best we can in staying open and supporting our community. We are a locally private-owned school so our enrollment really depends on the survival of the school and we’re struggling. I mean, as probably all childcare centers are, we’re struggling with enrollment, we’re struggling with our numbers," says Debbie Bradford, the director of education at Milton Montessori in Georgia.Bradford says the last few months have been very challenging as many families are worried about the coronavirus."The (coronavirus) numbers are on the rise so it’s definitely affecting the end of our school year, our summer and as we look to relaunch in August, we still see light enrollment," says Bradford.The school, which has two locations, has been able to stay open due to a number of parents who are essential workers. Bradford says, "These are front-line families. Some of them are workers on the front line and some of them are workers at home but need the income to make ends meet for our families."Primrose Schools has more than 400 locations across the country, providing infant daycare through private kindergarten. Primrose says the pandemic has dropped enrollment numbers at their facilities significantly."What we are seeing across the country is a very unsettling situation, where a lot of the family home cares that used to be accessible to families are closing. And the childcare centers, those individually owned and operated childcare centers, because of the shelter in place situation, many of them haven't been able to survive them," says Jo Kirchner, the CEO of Primrose Schools.Kirchner has been meeting regularly with other national daycare facilities and says many are concerned about the future of the childcare industry."It is a potential crisis that is going to escalate significantly in the next eight to 10 weeks as the districts decide what they're going to do," says Kirchner.One glimmer of hope is the boost of private kindergarten enrollment, which some parents have deemed a safer alternative than their local public school. Many hope private kindergarten enrollment can be kind of a saving grace for some private childcare centers."It will be somewhat of a saving grace in terms of bringing in base revenue to cover their fixed costs while we get through this pandemic and the families with the younger children will begin to come back,” Kirchner said.For Milton Montessori, the owners are hopeful they will be able to ride out this pandemic."We hope that at some point, families get comfortable with the new requirements for cleaning and for health and safety. And as things return to a normal, it's going to be a new normal," says Bradford.Bradford says they're hoping families start feeling safe enough to enroll their children and continue to support locally-owned childcare centers. 3055
