(KGTV) - The man who prosecutors believe was the target of a murder for hire came face-to-face Tuesday with those charged: His estranged wife and her gun instructor.Greg Mulvihill described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and at first he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the sniper in front of him. The North County father described a bitter custody battle in which he was accused of everything from drug use to sexual assault and molestation of their young son.RELATED: Trial begins in Carlsbad murder-for-hire plotMulvihill says he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad on Sept. 1, 2016, out of desperation, fearing his ex-wife, Diana Lovejoy, would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back.In the courtroom Tuesday, his ex-wife and the man accused of firing the gun, her weapons instructor, sat quietly, Lovejoy crying at times and shaking her head at others. Mulvihill was cross-examined Tuesday and the trial will resume Wednesday morning. 1506

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video of a violent arrest by San Diego Sheriff’s Deputies in Vista has renewed calls for better community engagement by local law enforcement.Rev. Shane Harris said that push was galvanized last July after Jonathon Colonel was shot and killed by a Deputy after a foot pursuit.While the Sheriff’s Department said Colonel was a documented gang member, he was not armed at the time of the shooting. His family said he was shot 17 times. The Sheriff’s Department said he had been reaching under his shirt when the deputy opened fire.After that shooting, Harris said the captain of the Sheriff’s station in Vista, Charles Cinnamo, promised to create a community advisory committee.Harris said the group would be composed of various community members who could offer perspective on issues ranging from racial profiling to police brutality.“Conversation lowers tension, automatically,” said Harris.Capt. WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday halted a deportation in progress and threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if the mother and daughter weren't returned to the U.S.U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington learned in court that the two plaintiffs in a lawsuit before him were being removed from the United States and confirmed later that they were on a plane headed to Central America. He said any delay in bringing them back would be intolerable.If they fail to comply, the judge said, Sessions, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and other senior Homeland Security officials would have to convince him not to hold them in contempt of court.The Department of Homeland Security was bringing the pair back to the United States on Thursday after the plane landed in El Salvador. Wall Street does not like the mixed messages coming out of the White House on trade.The Dow fell 600 points, or 2.4%, on Friday afternoon. The Nasdaq plunged 3%, while the S&P 500 retreated 2.4%.The Dow closed for the day down 588 points.Stocks had been trading higher earlier Friday, but the market turned sharply lower following conflicting messages coming out of the Trump administration about trade.While White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow sounded an optimistic note about China talks on CNBC, trade adviser Peter Navarro was simultaneously warning on CNN of higher tariffs if issues aren't resolved during the 90-day negotiating period."We've gotten a hodge-podge of mixed messages from people in the same administration," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley FBR. "We're not sure who we're supposed to listen to."Investors also received a softer jobs report on Friday.
