SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The group of individuals assigned with making a recommendation on the appropriateness of the Aztec mascot will not be named, according to San Diego State University officials.SDSU Sally Roush says intends to make decision about the mascot no later than May 31 after a recommendation made by the ‘Aztec task force’ April 30.RELATED: Should SDSU get rid of it's Aztec Warrior mascot?The task force includes five students, five staff members, five members of the community and two at-large appointees.SDSU said earlier in February they would name those on the task force, then later decided to keep their identities private.Some students question why a public university funded by taxpayers is hiding those responsible for a major decision.RELATED: SDSU Senate passes resolution to retire Aztec Warrior mascot “If we’re going to come to real solution, we need to know who is on that task force,” said SDSU Senior Brandon Jones, “it’s going go a long way in identifying the legitimacy of this task force.”SDSU defended their decision in a statement:"Until the conclusion of their work, names of this task force will be withheld in an effort to allow them the opportunity to deliberate, research and present their final recommendations without disruption." 1288

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The International Olympic Committee and Japanese government made an historic announcement Tuesday to postpone the 2020 summer Olympic games in Tokyo due to the coronavirus.Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed on Twitter that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games have been delayed until no later than summer 2021.The announcement left several San Diegan Olympic hopefuls dashed of any immediate Olympic dreams."It's kind of hard to wrap your head around it because you have been training so long for this one moment," Allison Halverson said back in Februaray.Her tone changed Tuesday."I was kind of like, 'Ok. That's good to know.' Now I can kind of refocus and figure out how to train for that," Halverson said.Swimmer Michael Chadwick says the lack of open pools is sidelining any training, making competition right now even less of a possibility."Too much has happened too quickly for us to really understand what the ramifications of it all are," Chadwick said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students said they've seen a steady decline at San Diego State University tailgates over the past three years.At their Homecoming tailgate Saturday some students were nervous to celebrate after learning a Freshman was gravely injured after a night of drinking."We definitely want to respect the family and respect the kid, and everyone who has been impacted by this because obviously this is something super severe," SDSU Senior Emma Marchant said.The parking lot was dotted with tailgaters, consisting mostly of alumni, a vast difference compared to the throngs of partiers in September 2018's home opener."Freshman year this whole area would just be covered with people and now it's kinda just us," Marchant said."Mainly undergraduates haven't been here," UCSD Alumna Teigan MacDonald said. Her sister is involved in Greek life at SDSU.A moratorium was announced October of 2018, requiring any group of 25 or more students to register and agree to a list of rules.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday."I think a lot of people are shocked, I understand why the university is doing it because we have people's kids' health at stake," MacDonald said.The University working to balance social life with safety."I think education and awareness is a huge step. i don't think punishing people and just suspending will do it because they've suspended again and again and this situation keeps happening again and again," MacDonald said."I hope there are measures taken that are intended to protect students but still allow them to be out here you know which is kind of a hard line to walk," Marchant said. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The all-clear was given after a suspicious device forced the evacuation of a building at San Diego City College Monday. The device was reported Monday afternoon in or near Building A, according to the school. The building serves as administrative offices. The college says no classes were affected by the evacuation. The building, as well as a cafeteria will remain closed for the remainder of the day. 431

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The future of warfare is in San Diego for the time being. The 21st Century Combined Arms Advanced Naval Technology Exercise is currently taking place at the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific). ANTX West 2019 is roughly two weeks long and features the brightest in the military, academia and industry demoing the latest advancements to see if they are ready for the battlefield. “This isn’t a trade show - this is ‘get people together let’s go do things and see how it goes,’” said Rear Admiral Donald Gabrielson, “this is innovation.” Much of technology of the the last several years has focused on human and machine interactions with virtual reality. “We can give feedback to the industry and say this is eligible for rapid prototyping or this needs some science and technology investment,” said Richard Byers, a systems engineer with the Navy. More than 80 developing products and systems are being tested at NIWC Pacific along with San Clemente island. “Being able to apply the technology in an operational a realistic environment is critically important,” said Brigadier General Christian Wortman, USMC.Congress has given the military the power to fast track products that perform well at ANTX for rapid prototyping and their discretion. 1290
