As activists march through cities across the country, some protests that started off peaceful have ultimately ended in violence and looting. Now, more businesses have taken notice and are taking action. “These are the boards we have here,” said Joe Quintana who works at a souvenir shop in downtown Denver. After several neighboring businesses were broken into, Quintana’s boss decided to board up his business. “It takes time and more money to do this but trying to keep the safety out here,” he said. Construction crews are now working around the clock, protecting properties with plywood. “It can be hectic having to put this stuff up on a regular basis,” said handyman Jeffrey Berlin, who is reluctantly cashing in on the chaos. After being out of work for months due to COVID-19 concerns, Berlin is taking whatever jobs he can get, including boarding up buildings like Starbucks coffee shops. “I’d like to have a lot more (work) but I don’t want to get it under these circumstances,” he said. These circumstances have caused more businesses to board up their properties including some that recently reopened during this pandemic. “We’re just trying to stay safe because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Cody Kluck, who manages Osteria Marco. Just days after coronavirus restrictions were lifted, Kluck had to board up in fear of looters. “It’s like a false sense of security,” he said. “But I mean it will keep hopefully a brick or something from going through a window and people coming into our restaurant.”As protesters continue to call for social change across the country, others are now asking activists to alter their tactics saying protests should be done peacefully. 1708

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – This isn’t Hawaii or the California coast or even Florida. It’s Wisconsin where surfers don’t pray for waves, they work with what they got. “So, it could be a Wednesday night or a Sunday morning, so you got to jump on it,” one local Wisconsin surfer said. In a region known for beer, cheese, and very cold winter, the surf scene is growing and Jake Bresette is helping lead the charge. “I just love it, man,” he said. “Anytime I can get out into the water, whether it’s one foot or 10 feet, it’s always a good time.” More and more surfers are keeping up on a well-kept secret: with the right weather, the waves on the Great Lakes can be just that – great! Outside of the water, Bresette owns and operates Lake Effect Surf Shop in Milwaukee where he sells surf and skate gear and offers lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. “Yeah, we actually do them with or without waves,” he said. “So, if there are waves that’s great, we’ll get out here and score some waves. But, if not, we’ll bring out some big paddle boards.” While introducing the sport of surfing to a new generation, Bresette always remembers to honor the local pioneers of the sport. “We didn’t start the surf scene here,” he said. “We’re just helping to continue the progression.” Bresette says the key to that progression is to get out when the surf is up. “I know it sounds a little cliché, but it is really about the journey as well as the success of finding waves,” he said. Bresette’s recent journey took him to Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, where despite small waves there’s always a chance to capture that big stoke.Because when that big day comes, you’ll be glad you did. 1688

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The robotics lab at the University of Louisville is a lot like a toy shop. “You don’t feel like you’re working with them, more like you’re playing around with robots,” said Sumit Das, a researcher at the lab. For him, it’s a dream come true. “I was always tinkering with things and making new stuff and my parents always encouraging me to do new stuff and even if I failed, they would be like, ‘it’s ok, move on to the next project.’ So, it has always been a project after project after project,” said Das. But here’s the thing. He’s not playing around. Sumit and PhD student Shamsudeen Abubakar, who goes by Abu, are part of a research team building a robot to help people heal. “So, in my estimate, about 5 to 10 years, hopefully we’ll see them be able to work alongside nurses,” said Das. This is ARNA—the Adaptive Nursing Robot Assistant. ARNA is built to help nurses do their job. “So you push on this like a walker that elderly people use,” said Abubakar The robot can do a few things: monitor a patients vital signs, pick things up and bring them to a patient, and help them walk down a hallway. “This robot really has the potential to diminish the incident of patient falls,” said Cindi Logsdon, a nursing profesor at the University of Louisville. Patient falls are a big deal, and Logsdon knows. She’s a consultant on the project and was the Associate Chief of Nursing at the University of Louisville Hospital for almost 10 years. “A big reason that patients fall when they’re in hospitals is they try and get out of bed by themselves, or they try and reach something that they can’t reach, or they depend on the darn bedside table,” said Logsdon. According to the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, between 700,000 and 1 million patients fall in hospitals each year. Everyone involved in the project is hoping the robot will make a big difference in the U.S. and abroad. “I’m from Nigeria which is a developing country and I think robotics offers an avenue to kind of, you know, not jump the steps in development but kind of close the gap,” said Abubakar. “If there are any of the basic sort of skills that a robot could take over in collaboration with the nurses, in partnership with a nurse, it frees up the nurse for more higher level activities,” said Logsdon. “It’s about how to assist them in doing tasks that can eat their time up,” said Das. I know what you’re thinking. Sure these robots may help us heal in the hospital, but what’s to stop them from becoming self-aware and destroying the human race? “I think that’s limited to fiction. I don’t think that’s going to be a reality as it’s shown in Hollywood. I wouldn’t be worried about that,” said Das. 2725

PARADISE, Calif. – The struggle to emerge from rubble and ash now grips the town of Paradise, California. “We’ve all been through the same thing,” said Mayor Jody Jones. “So much trauma. Nobody else really knows what we’ve been through.” Last year, the Camp Fire, as it is called, destroyed 19,000 homes and killed more than 80 people killed. The recovery has been slow. Though the town issued 500 building permits after the fire, so far, only nine homes have been rebuilt. However, 3,000 people are back, along with nearly 200 small businesses that reopened, like Nic’s Restaurant. “The biggest challenge is timing,” said restaurant owner Nicky Jones, “because there’s so many people wanting to rebuild.” The challenges are staggering. Flames scorched hundreds of thousands of trees that now need to be removed because they’re in danger of falling. The fire also left behind something more ominous: contaminated soil. “For the burnt properties, more than half of them are contaminated,” Mayor Jones said. Evacuation routes there also remain woefully inadequate, potentially trapping people again, should another wildfire break out -- much like they are currently raging in other parts of California. “I think, right now, looking at the fires in California and people got to start asking those tough questions - at what point do I decide I don't want to move back out there?” said Robert Allen, an adjunct professor specializing in risk management at Tulane University. For some who call Paradise home, though, rebuilding is not so much a choice, but a calling. “My family lost 13 homes,” said April Kelly, “and for them to be able to have a place to come back to and to see me to be a part of the rebuild process personally, is just a really big accomplishment.”It’s one with many steps still to go.Correction: In a previous version of this story, we incorrectly identified the mayor of Paradise, CA as Judy Jones. The mayor of Paradise is Jody Jones. We apologize for the error. 1995

Two sets of human remains found in the backyard of Chad Daybell's property have been confirmed to be those of JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan.According to a news release Saturday from the Rexburg Police Department in Idaho, the medical examiner's office confirmed their identities after performing an autopsy.Earlier this week, family members said in a statement that they were informed the remains were JJ and Tylee, who were reported missing last year. J & Tylee are gone, Joshua Vallow's grandparents confirm. #JJVallow #TyleeRyan pic.twitter.com/XGPNMbK7U0— Marc Sternfield (@msternfield) June 10, 2020 Police said Wednesday that two bodies were found Tuesday on Daybell's Idaho property during the execution of a search warrant. An official cause of death hasn't been released. The children's grandparents released a statement saying the family was "filled with unfathomable sadness" and could confirm that the bodies were JJ and Tylee. Daybell was taken into custody Tuesday and appeared in court Wednesday when a judge set a million bail. He is currently jailed on charges of “destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence."A prosecutor said during Wednesday's initial court appearance that they were aware the remains were that of children, but at that time officials had not yet fully identified them. Lori Daybell, Chad's current wife, has remained in jail on a million bail as authorities continued the search for JJ and Tylee. She has been in jail since February.Authorities in Arizona had also been investigating two deaths tied to the case -- Lori Daybell's fourth husband, Charles Vallow, as well as her brother, Alex Cox.
