THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A grand jury in North Carolina indicted three people after police said a mother traded her 2-year-old child to another couple in exchange for a car.Alice Leann Todd, Tina Marie Chavis and Vicencio Mendoza Romero were arrested Wednesday.An investigation was opened when Chavis brought the then-2-year-old to Wake Forest Baptist Health's High Point Medical Center back in July because she thought the child was having an allergic reaction, Thomasville police said. Hospital staff contacted the police and child protective services after noticing bruises on the child.Chavis, 47, claimed to be the child's biological mother, later changing her story and saying she was the child's adoptive mother, but couldn't produce any documentation, police said. The child was placed in the care of another family member and the mother, Todd, was located.Investigators said they were able to determine that Chavis and Romero had traded their car for Todd's child in 2018. The three have been charged with the unlawful sale, surrender or purchase of a minor and are currently being held on ,000 bonds at the Davidson County Jail. 1149

Three Gulf Coast states were placed under a Tropical Storm Warning on Friday as Tropical Storm Cristobal is setting its sights for the US late Sunday. According the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal is a minimal tropical storm along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with top winds of 40 MPH. The slow-moving storm has dumped heavy rain over the Yucatan Peninsula this week.After stalling out over the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center projects the storm will move across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend before coming ashore late Sunday. Parts of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast are under a Tropical Storm Watch.The Atlantic Hurricane Season is off to its most active start in recorded history. Cristobal is already the third named storm of 2020. No other hurricane season has had three named storms this early in the year. Most major projections are calling for an abnormally busy hurricane season in the Atlantic. The storm is forecast to remain a tropical storm through landfall, although the National Hurricane Center expects Cristobal to strengthen into a strong tropical storm by landfall. Among the locations under a Tropical Storm Warning is New Orleans, which is one of the most susceptible cities to flooding in the US. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a State of Emergency ahead of the storm. Along with heavy rains and gusty winds, tornadoes and storm surge are also possible with Cristobal. 1453

There have been thousands of aftershocks after two strong earthquakes hit northeast of Los Angeles. Communities are shaken after the two earthquakes—measuring at 6.4 and 7.1 magnitudes--hit in less than two days. The July 5 earthquake was the strongest in Southern California in 20 years. Many people living in Trona, California say they don't want to stick around to see the next one. “I know this is God's work and all, but it’s traumatizing,” says Dorothea Mith. Smith says she no longer feels safe living in this section of Southern California, and she plans on moving. “All this is broken apart,” Smith says, as she looks at the damage to her home. “It fell. My glasses started falling and I just couldn't move.” Smith says all she was thinking about during the earthquakes was about staying alive. “I just don't feel safe her anymore,” she says. “The wall is breaking, and I once loved this house. Loved it.”Smith says her community is without water. “It’s nasty. We can’t use the restroom; we can’t shower,” she says. The feeling of vulnerability seems to be spreading across the desert. Construction workers say they’ve fixed multiple water main breaks in just the past few days. Meanwhile, at the town’s high school, volunteers and the Army are handing out free water and meals to residents. The U.S. Attorney's Office has announced arrests have been made in a “prolific” drug trafficking ring in Western New York.Four people have been arrested in a crime ring which stretches from Buffalo to Los Angeles, according to U.S. Attorney James Kennedy, Jr. Three of those people are from Buffalo: David Burgin, Rodney Pierce and David Washington are all charged with multiple drug crimes. 403
