CHANDLER, AZ — The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says Mikal Lee Smith, the son of ex-NFL coach and current head of the University of Illinois football program Lovie Smith, has been indicted after a Chandler police investigation accusing him of running a prostitution ring.According to a release, between December 2018 and September 2019, Mikal Smith and Aprel Mae Rasmussen operated and maintained an illegal prostitution enterprise.In one instance, Mikal Smith and Rasmussen allegedly induced and encouraged an adult female victim to “engage in acts of prostitution for over two months.”Mikal Smith reportedly used surveillance and threats of retaliation to keep the victim under his control.It’s unclear how many other victims, if any, were involved. California will end the cash bail system in a sweeping reform for the state. Rather than requiring defendants to pay in order to be released before trial, their release will hinge on an assessment of their risk to public safety."Today, California reforms its bail system so that rich and poor alike are treated fairly," Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement.Brown signed the bill Tuesday, and the new law goes into effect October 1, 2019.Critics have long contended that the money bail system perpetuates inequality. While some people are able to quickly get out of jail by posting bail, people who aren't able to afford it sit in jail until the court takes action, or until they work with a bail bond agent to secure their freedom, which can leave them in debt."Abolishing money bail and replacing it with a risk-based system will enhance justice and safety. For too long, our system has allowed the wealthy to purchase their freedom regardless of their risk, while the poor who pose no danger languish in jail," said Assemblymember Rob Bonta, one the lawmakers who introduced the bill, in a statement.Under the new law, a pretrial assessment would be done by either court employees or a local public agency that has been contracted to determine a defendant's risk. That entity would assess the likelihood that the person will not appear in court or commit a new crime while released, and would make a recommendation for conditions of release. (KGTV) – It opened with much fanfare back in September, but after a two week period of cancellations February, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet was still dealing with setbacks in early March.“I can’t say that it didn’t [suffer],” said Cal Jet’s President, George Wozniak of their reputation.On Friday, he stood on the tarmac at McClellan-Palomar Airport, personally apologizing to travelers boarding a plane at 4:15 p.m. that had been originally scheduled to leave at 9 a.m.Wozniak said the passengers had been notified of the delay earlier in the day. The plane had experienced mechanical problems the night before and had to fly to Arizona last night for repairs.The delays come after the airline canceled nearly two weeks of flights, beginning just before President’s Day weekend.Wozniak said the plane they use, which is owned by Elite Air, had also been booked by NCAA basketball teams. “It was either a crew or aircraft scheduling problem, where if they had one pilot get ill and not show up, it could throw the whole thing off,” described Wozniak.They could theoretically still use it, but rather than risk more abrupt cancellations, he decided to clear the schedule until they could get the plane back full time.“It was not an easy decision to make,” said Wozniak.Cal Jet’s Yelp page says why. CARLSBAD (CNS) — A 55-year-old Oceanside man died Saturday in a solo-vehicle collision at Palomar Airport Road.The collision happened at 10:40 a.m. over the Interstate 5 Freeway at Palomar Airport Road, according to Sgt. Chris Karches of the Carlsbad Police Department. The black Chevrolet pickup was occupied by the driver — who died at the scene — as well as a juvenile and a woman. The passengers were not injured.A preliminary investigation showed that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, Karches said, but the investigation was ongoing.Palomar Airport Road at I-5 was closed while officers investigated the collision but later reopened. 669

(KGTV) - A brush fire broke out in a training range on Camp Pendleton Friday, creating a plume of smoke visible above North San Diego County.The fire started at 11 a.m. near the center of the base in the Basilone/San Mateo area, officials said. By 3:30 p.m., 50 acres had burned.Helicopters were deployed to drop water and fire retardant.Ground crews from Camp Pendleton and Orange County Fire also battled flames in 90-degree weather.Officials said there were no structures threatened by the fire. 529
